Career Education vs. College Preparation
Fundamental differences in subject matter approach
Merging A technological society needs both
College PreparationCollege Preparation
Roots in Medieval Church/ University Classical education- includes culture Broad principles and theoretical knowledge Curriculum driven by what is taught in college Frequently called education High Schools Category 1 Worker
Career EducationCareer Education
Roots in craftsmanship Difference between need to know and nice to
know Hands- on Curriculum driven by job and task analysis Frequently called training Career Centers Category 2 Worker
College Prep OrganizationsCollege Prep Organizations Institute of Computer Technology (ICT)-
– Intel & Microsoft partnership– Active in West and South
International Society for Technology Education (ISTE)
Engineering Organizations– Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
SIGCSE Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education
SIGCUE Special Interest Group for Computer Uses in Education
– Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Job Analysis used for Certification
College Prep OrganizationsCollege Prep Organizations
Advanced Placement College Prep – Tests developed by College Entrance Examination
Board– College courses taught by high school teachers– Students tested and rated score from 5-1 – AP curriculum determined by a survey of college courses– Includes binary trees and recursive data structures in
curriculum Curriculum flows downward from Accreditation
Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) accreditation

School DifficultiesSchool Difficulties
1. Keeping teachers up to date 2. Hiring Instructors 3. Purchasing Equipment 4. Maintaining Equipment 5. Motivating Students 5. Recruiting Students 6 Low Student Math Levels 7 Developing Curriculum
Help from OSU CommentsHelp from OSU Comments Field Trips, Projects, Guest Speakers,
Guidance, Mentoring of Students and Teachers, Videos
Integration of technology into curriculum Offer tuition paid classes Open course offerings to curriculum areas
other than math- for example business/tech teachers AND remove prerequisite requirements to take technology classes
Technology Training for Teachers We need teachers- not enough money for
teachers to go into public schools
Survey ConclusionsSurvey Conclusions
There seem to be an adequate number of computers but maintaining equipment is a problem
Business driving curriculum as companies with forward looking management teams are assisting schools in delivering instruction
Most of the coursework students are doing is at the Category 2 level. There are a lot of students enrolled
Survey ConclusionsSurvey Conclusions
Math requirements are in place for AP classes but other classes have few math prerequisites
Difficulty for schools to keep teachers up to date and hire competent teachers
While curriculum is in place not very many students are leaving courses certified
Student OrganizationsStudent Organizations
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Business Professionals of America (BPA) Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Four H JETS- Junior Engineering Technical Society Use clubs to get young women & minorities
involved in computers– GirlTech– www.gURLwURLd.com– National Society of Black Engineers- NSBE Jr.
Programming ContestsProgramming Contests
American Computer Science League- monthly contests
BPA local, statewide and national contests FBLA local, statewide and national contests USA Computing Olympiad- supports pre-
college computing through competitions International Olympiad in Informatics- annual
competition for seniors in secondary schools
RecommendationsRecommendations
Develop long term relationships- post survey Develop summer workshops in concert with
industry for teachers and/or students for Midwest region– Wright State offers NEAS+ National Engineering
Search+ assessment– University of Dayton offers “Women in Engineering
Summer Camp– Baldwin-Wallace offers Biotechnology summer
workshop– University of Akron offers a 3 week workshop in Science
and Engineering
RecommendationsRecommendations
Develop a competition for high school students Work with a broad based group for a definable
teacher certification Work with broad based group to develop
standards for information technology education Work with both type of programs
– Although Ohio State is involved in developing college prep should also assist in developing career education
