When beginning any Information Search it’s a good idea to review
the steps of the Big6 .
Information Search Steps
1.Task Definition—in school a teacher will give a research project packet describing the task.
2.Information Seeking Strategies– what are the possible types of information sources? Click for a list of ideas
3.Location and Access—begin identifying and looking at possible sources that will work for your project.
4. Use of Information—pull specific information from sources.
5.Synthesis—bring thesis, notes, quotes, ideas together into a final project for print out or presentation.
6.Evaluation—self evaluation of the project. What went well? What did not go well? Did I follow the assignment task?

While it will be easy to find information, the reading level of the information will vary.
When you find a source do a quick read to see if you understand what is written.
Passwords are needed for remote access. The password slips are available in the Media Center and are located by the
Circulation Desk.
Your teacher may provide them in the research packet.

Citing the sources you consult and use is very important.
A bibliography maker guidance tool such as Easybib makes the job easier. Create an Easybib account while at school to receive the school version of Easybib. Once your account is made you can use it anywhere. http://www.wayzata.k12.mn.us/Page/8570
Many of the databases featured in this presentation create the citation for you. Simply copy and paste into Google Docs or Word.
Some people have found the bibliography maker in Word to be user friendly as well.
Web Site Evaluation
After using the resources available to you on the Media Links page you might still need to surf the net for additional source material. There are a variety of search engines and directories available.
How do you know if the material that comes in a search is trust worthy or bogus? Here is a simple tool that works.
