cussed by Wife [11]. The Internet will probably becomea new common facility for exchanging primary chemi-cal information [11], as well as other information.

Internet journals.

The production, accumulation, and distribution of the rapidly increasing wealth ofinformation is typical for present-day science. In thecontext of chemistry, this is primarily information onthe procedures and results of experiments, theoreticalevaluations, the properties and reactivities of newlysynthesized compounds and materials, and quantitativepredictable structure–property relationships. The num-ber of new compounds increases exponentially; about18 million compounds were known in 1999 [11].

The necessity of the rapid understanding of thisexpanding information calls for the development ofonline publications.

Along with the electronic versions of all of the seri-ous scientific journals, a considerable number of Inter-net journals are published; some of them are listed inTable 1.

The American Institute of Physics (aip.org;www.aip.org) and The American Physical Society(www.aps.org) regularly issue multijournal compila-tions of the latest studies:

Applications of Superconduc-tivity

(vjsuper.org; www.vjsuper.org),

Virtual Journalof Biological Physics Research

(vjbio.org;www.vjbio.org),

Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science& Technology

(vjnano.org; www.vjnano.org),

VirtualJournal of Quantum Information

(vjquantuminfo.org;www.vjquantuminfo.org), and

Virtual Journal ofUltrafast Science

(vjultrafast.org; www.vjul-trafast.org). Information on the above virtual journalshas been collected on the site

Virtual Journals in Sci-ence and Technology

(virtualjournals.org; www.virtu-aljoumals.org).

The site

E-STREAMS

(e-streams.com;www.e-streams.com), which is issued by YBP LibraryServices (www.ybp.com), publishes electronic reviewsof articles in science, engineering, agriculture, andmedicine.

The site

Environmental Management & ScienceContents Alert

(www.extranet.elsevier.com/list-man/ems/EMS%20ContentsAlert_Last.htm) providesa regular overview of the most recently published jour-nal issues, new books, reference works and specialissues of the Elsevier Science on environmental topics.

Papers recently published in the correspondingElsevier print journals are collected in the virtual jour-nals

Physics of Life, Virtual Journal of EnvironmentalSustainability

, and

Virtual Journal of Industrial Efflu-ents.

The network Free Pint (freepint.com;www.freepmt.com) issues an electronic newsletter(freepint.com/issues/issues.htm; www.freep-int.com/issues/issues.htm), in which informationsearch tips and site reviews are published.

The browser Electronic Journal Miner (ejour-nal.coalliance.org) (The Colorado Alliance of ResearchLibraries, CARL; coalliance.org; www.coalliance.org)allows one to view and search for electronic journals bytitle and by subject.

Changes in the status of scientific journals.

For anoptimal literature search, information about changes inthe status of scientific journals is important. New jour-nals appear (either as completely new titles or based onsuperseded titles); some of them discontinue publica-tion or become assimilated into other journals, andmerged journals are formed.

Beginning from the first issue of volume 372 (Janu-ary 2002),

Fresenius’ Journal of Analytical Chemistry

(formerly

Fresenius’ Zeitschrift für Analytische Che-mie

) merged with

Analusis

,

a European journal on ana-lytical chemistry, and with Spanish

Química

Analítica

and was continued under the new title

Analytical andBioanalytical Chemistry.

The journal belongs toGesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (www.gdch.de),Société Française de Chimie (www.sfc.fr), andSociedad Española de Química Analítica (seqa.es;www.seqa.es) and is published by Springer Science.

In 2000, the publication of the journal

AnalyticalProceedings Including Analytical Communications

was ceased, and a section entitled

Communications

appeared in the journal

The Analyst

(The Royal Societyof Chemistry).

The journal

Biomedical Mass Spectrometry

wasrenamed to

Biomedical and Environmental Mass Spec-trometry

, then continued as

Biological Mass Spectrom-etry,

before merging with

Journal of Mass Spectrome-try

(Wiley; wiley.com; www.wiley.com). The latter waspreviously entitled

Organic Mass Spectrometry.Journal of Magnetic Resonance

was divided into

Journal of Magnetic Resonance, Series A

and

Journalof Magnetic Resonance, Series B

(1993–1996), butsince 1997 it has again been published as

Journal ofMagnetic Resonance

(Elsevier Science).In 1998,

European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry

and

European Journal of Organic Chemistry

(Wiley–VCH) were organized on the basis of the followingwidely-known journals:

Anales de Química

,

Bulletindes Sociétés Chimiques Belges

,

Bulletin de la SociétéChimique de France, Chemische Berichte

,

ChimikaChronika

,

Gazzetta Chimica Italiana

,

, and

Revista Portuguesa Química. Che-mische Berichte

was incorporated into

European Jour-nal of Inorganic Chemistry

, and

Justus Liebigs Annalender Chemie

was incorporated into

Physics: A Journal of European Chemical Societies.

Atpresent, this journal belongs to and is published by anownership board comprising representatives frommany chemical societies.

At the end of 1999,

Journal de Chimie Physique etde Physico-Chimie Biologique

(EDP Sciences France)became part of a new European journal devoted tochemical physics and physical chemistry called

ChemPhysChem

:

A European Journal of ChemicalPhysics and Physical Chemistry

, which has been pub-lished since January 2000 by Wiley-VCH under theauspices of

Soci

é

t

é

Francaise

de Chimie and Gesell-schaft Deutscher Chemiker.

In January 2000,

Acta Chemica Scandinavica,Series A: Physical and Inorganic Chemistry

and

ActaChemica Scandinavica, Series B: Organic Chemistryand Biochemistry

were incorporated into

Journal of theChemical Society, Perkin Transactions 1: An Interna-tional Journal of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry;Journal of the Chemical Society, Perkin Transactions 2:An International Journal of Physical Organic Chemis-try;

and

Journal of the Chemical Society, Dalton Trans-actions: An International Journal of Inorganic Chemis-try.

However, in January 2003, the Royal Society ofChemistry merged

Journal of the Chemical Society,Perkin Transactions 1

and

Journal of the ChemicalSociety, Perkin Transactions 2

to form

Organic & Bio-molecular Chemistry.

In 1997,

The Journal of Physical Chemistry

(theAmerican Chemical Society) split into

The Journal ofPhysical Chemistry, A

and

The Journal of PhysicalChemistry, B.

Section

A

publishes works dealing withmolecules (theory, dynamics, spectroscopy, kinetics, and environmental chemistry). Section

B

publishespapers related to materials (nanostructures, micelles,

macromolecules, condensed matter, and biophysicalchemistry), surface chemistry, and interface processes.

In 1967, the journal

Spectrochimica Acta

(ElsevierScience) was divided into

Spectrochimica Acta, Part A:Molecular Spectroscopy

and

Spectrochimica Acta,Part B: Atomic Spectroscopy.

Since 1995, the formerhas been published under the title

Spectrochimica Acta,Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy.

Changes in the status of a scientific journal can berelated to political factors.

Zeitschrift für physikalischeChemie

was started in Leipzig. After the Second WorldWar and the division of Germany, the publication of

Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie

(Leipzig) contin-ued, and

Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie NeueFolge

was launched in Frankfurt-on-Main. After thereunification of Germany, the journals were again inte-grated into

Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie

(R. Oldenbourg GmbH & Co KG).

Rapid advances in theoretical chemistry resulted inthe appearance of a supplement to

Journal of Molecu-lar Structure

entitled Theochem, which retained theparent journal’s volume numbering. Theochem(Elsevier Science) later became a separate journal andwas ranked third out of 46 scientific journals in an eval-uation of titles held in the Russian Foundation for BasicResearch’s electronic library database performed inMarch 2000 [29]. In 1997–2001, Molbank was a part ofthe journal Molecules (Molecular Diversity Preserva-tion International), and became an independent journalin 2002.

The journals Industrial & Engineering Chemistry(1909–1970), Industrial & Engineering ChemistryFundamentals (1962–1986), Industrial & EngineeringChemistry Process Design and Development (1962–1986), and Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Prod-

uct Research and Development (1962–1986) were theforerunners of Industrial & Engineering ChemistryResearch published by the American Chemical Society.

In the end of 2000, the publication of the journalACH: Models in Chemistry founded in 1951 as ActaChimica Hungarica, Acta Chimica Academiae Scien-tiae Hungaricae was ceased.

In 1993, the publication of the journal Metalloor-ganicheskaya Khimiya (Organometallic Chemistry)was ceased, and a similarly named section was createdin Izvestiya Akademii Nauk, Seriya Khimicheskaya(Russian Chemical Bulletin) (Zelinsky Institute ofOrganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences,Moscow; www.ioc.ac.ru). The English edition of thejournal is published by the Russian Academy of Sci-ences (www.ras.ru/win/htm) and Kluwer AcademicPublishers.

In 2002, the publication of the journal Sciences ofSoils (Springer Science with HintzeOnline) wasceased. Springer Science no longer publishes TheChemical Intelligencer and Immunologie & Impfen. The Biochemical Engineering Journal and The Chemi-cal Engineering Journal (Elsevier Science) weremerged to form The Chemical Engineering Journal andThe Biochemical Engineering Journal, which wasagain split into Biochemical Engineering Journal andChemical Engineering Journal later on.

In 1997, The Journal of Peptide Research (Black-well Publishing) appeared as the successor to Interna-tional Journal of Peptide and Protein Research andPeptide Research. Since 2006, it has been issued underthe new title Chemical Biology and Drug Design.

In 1999, Journal of Marine Biotechnology mergedwith Molecular Marine Biology and Biotechnology toform the new journal Marine Biotechnology (Springer

Science). In 2001, Research in Experimental Medicinemerged with Clinical and Experimental Medicine(Springer Science). Mokuzai Gakkaishi, Journal of theJapan Wood Research Society (The Japan WoodResearch Society; www.jwrs.org/index-e.html;www.jwrs.org/index-e.html) was separated into twobimonthly journals, Mokuzai Gakkaishi and Journal ofWood Science, from 1988 (volume 44). The currentMokuzai Gakkaishi publishes original reports in Japa-nese with English abstracts, and Journal of Wood Sci-ence publishes reports in English only. In 2000, thejournal Community Ecology (published by AkadémiaiKiadõ, Budapest; www.akkrt.hu/main.jsp?lan-guage=en) was formed from the merger of the ecologi-cal periodicals Coenoses and Abstracta Botanica.

The journal Microporous and Mesoporous Materi-als was organized in 1998 through the amalgamation ofMicroporous Materials and Zeolites (Elsevier Science).

The journal Physics and Chemistry of the Earth(Elsevier Science) was published from 1995 to 1998,then split into Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, PartA: Solid Earth and Geodesy; Physics and Chemistry ofthe Earth, Part B: Hydrology, Oceans and Atmosphere;and Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Part C: Solar–Terrestrial and Planetary Science. In 2002, these jour-nals reverted to the original title. In 1998, the Japanesejournals Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricityand Journal of Physics of the Earth merged to form anew journal Earth, Planets, and Space (TERRAPUB,Terra Scientific Publishing Company, Tokyo; www.ter-rapub.co.jp).

An example of equality in journal naming followinga merger is Acustica United with Acta Acustica (TheAcoustical Society of America; asa.aip.org), whichresults from a merger of the journals Acustica and ActaAcustica.

Note that the Elsevier Science web site includes a“Journal Title Changes” section (info.sciencedi-rect.com/sd_updates/title_changes/index.shtml; www.info.sciencedirect.com/sd_updates/title_changes/index.shtml).

In 2001, the publication of a number of journals bythe Gordon and Breach Publishing Group was ceased, because the publishing house was amalgamated withTaylor & Francis Inc. It was reported(www.swets.com/home.html; www.swets.com/web/show)that the latter purchased the publisher Swets &Zeitlinger from the Royal Swets & Zeitlinger company(www.swets.com/home.html; www.swets.com/web/show).

A number of cases when some journals wereabsorbed by others are mentioned in [30], on theInternet (chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/naturscil.html;www.chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/naturscil.html), andpartly in Table 2. The same sources present numerousdata about changes in journal names. Examples aregiven in Table 3.

Publishing and library resources. Web sites ofelectronic libraries and libraries with electronicresources, information networks, search systems, data-bases, and catalogues of natural-scientific literature canbe found in [30] and on the Internet (chem.sara-tov.ru/pankratov/naturscil.html; www.chem.sara-tov.ru/pankratov/naturscil.html). Tables 4 and 5 listsome examples of publishers’ web addresses; thosedenoted with an asterisk are links to the first level of agiven resource.

From viewing the publishers’ sites, even the mostknowledgeable user will find journals and books ofwhich he had never suspected the existence.

The sites of a number of publishing houses, librar-ies, search systems, databases, and catalogues allowsearching by author name, article title, journal name, book title, research subject, science area, keywords, etc.

Many electronic libraries provide access to publish-ers’ web sites; this makes easier the acquisition ofdetailed journal information (addresses, editorialboard, aims and scope, audience, subscription informa-tion, guide for authors, copyright information, tables ofcontents, abstracts, full text papers, news, etc.).

The presented list of publishing and informationalstructures is far from being complete. However, thementioned publishing houses, scientific institutions andorganizations, educational institutions, societies, asso-ciations, federations, unions, and companies make animportant contribution to the electronic and printedproducts in the field of natural sciences.

The web sites and titles of resources change fromtime to time. However, the information presented in thispaper, as well as in [30] and on the web site (chem.sara-tov.ru/panlcratov/naturscil.html; www.chem.sara-tov.ru/pankratov/naturscil.html), will facilitate the

searching of Internet resources by both their currentand their previous names.

Access to web resources. There is a large numberof web sites offering a starting point to access resourceson the Internet. An extensive list of publishers andreviews of selected electronic libraries are availablefrom the web sites listed in the online supplement tothis paper (chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/natursci1_eng.html;www.chem.saratov.ru/pankratov/natursci1_eng.html).
