BEN HOUGHTON—2012 MOST OUTSTANDING GRADUATING STUDENT

Ben has excelled in his career at the highest level by winning a gold medal and ‘Best of Nation’

gaining the highest score of all Australians, across all competitions at the WorldSkills competition

in London last year. He also completed his Electrical Trade apprenticeship at Dubbo College in

December 2011 and is now a Qualified Electrical Supervisor.

“Going to TAFE is the best way—it opens so many doors and possibilities” Ben said.

“The training that TAFE has provided has given me the confidence and credibility to seek

opportunities not only at a national level, but internationally as well.”

Ben said, “I always wanted to be the best I could when i started my apprenticeship and I realised

that it would be necessary to work hard for the four years of the apprenticeship, fortunately I have

had a great employer, TAFE teacher

and fantastic support from my

parents. I am not only grateful for

the support that I received during

my apprenticeship but also for the

acknowledgement that I received for

my achievements.”

David Arnold, Ben’s nominating

teacher said, “His knowledge and

understanding of the apprenticeship

and vocational training systems

has enabled him to achieve at the

highest level. He has become a role

model for the electrical industry by

assisting in the skill development

of apprentices and promoting

the trade.” Ben is a valued team

member at AKE Electrical and Data

in Dubbo. He hopes to build on

his knowledge and skills that will

enable him to develop a career

to contribute to a sustainable

electrical industry. He is still

associated with WorldSkills, training

national competitors, and was

invited to judge the 2012 National

competition.
