The Haematology Department at Concord Hospital is part of the Concord Cancer Centre. We provide leading treatment and care for patients with blood cancers and other blood disorders, such as anaemia and thrombosis. There are no out of pocket costs for Medicare eligible patients.

Thrombosis ClinicAspecialThrombosisClinic,dedicatedtothe management of patients with Venous Thromboembolism and anticoagulation issues, including novel oral anticoagulants, is conducted onFridays.

Haematology and Ambulatory Care Unit (HACU)

TheHaematologyandAmbulatoryCareUnit(HACU)islocatedatConcordHospital,MainBuilding,GroundFloorEast(neartheClinics/ConsultationRooms).

HACUprovides16specialisttreatmentareasfor Haematology outpatients, allowing them to remain in their own homes and be supported by their families while they receive treatment.

HACUtreatspatientsrequiringchemotherapy,blood and platelet transfusions, antibody infusions and rapid iron infusions. Patients requiringbonemarrowbiopsiesorstemcellharvestingarealsotreatedinHACU.

HACUnursesareencouragedtospendthetimetogettoknowtheirpatientsandprovidethebestlevelofpersonalisedcarepossible.HACUpatientsalsohaveaccesstoourHaematologySpecialists,asrequired,duringtheirvisitfortreatment.

With the overall aim of keeping patients out of Hospital and providing them outpatient treatment,HACUalsofacilitatessupportforpatientsfromarangeofotherhealthcareprofessionals, as needed, including social workers, aged care assessment teams, psychologists and dieticians.

Ward5EastislocatedonLevel5ofConcordHospital(MainBuilding).Itprovides24beds,aswellas4HEPAfiltrationrooms,forHaematologyandOncologyinpatients.

HaematologypatientsadmittedtoWard5Eastincludethosewithbloodcancersundergoingintensive chemotherapy, those recovering from stem cell harvesting and transplants and thoseundergoingmedicalinvestigations.Ward5Eastalsoprovidesshort-termpalliativecarefor patients towards the end of their life, however, most are cared for at the Hospital’s new PalliativeCareUnit.

Clinical Research Unit

TheClinicalResearchUnitatConcordHospital’sDepartmentofHaematologyisoneofthelargest,mostrapidlygrowing,ClinicalTrialsUnitsinAustralia.

Weconductworld-leading,patient-centeredclinicaltrialstoaccessanddevelopinnovativetherapiesforLeukaemia,Lymphoma,Myelomaandotherblooddisorders–researchwhichevaluates the safety and efficacy of new medicines. Volunteer patients are recruited into Phase II studies demonstrating efficacy of new medicines and Phase III studies comparing the current standard of care with these new agents. It has been well documented that clinical trials improve outcomes for patients and have greatly increased the cure rates for many blood cancers over recent years.

Hundreds of patients at Concord Hospital have participated in this research and have benefitedgreatlyfrommanynewtreatments,longbeforetheyareTGAapprovedandPBSfunded.TherearenumeroustypesofLeukaemiaandLymphomaandourgoalistoaccessnew drugs for as broad a range of such blood cancers as possible. We are participating in excitingnewdevelopmentsforbloodcancertreatmentscomingoutofEuropeandtheUSA.

Byparticipatinginourworld-leadingclinicaltrials,ourpatientshaveaccessedmillionsofdollarsworthofnewmedicinesthatwouldotherwisenotbeavailabletothem.Forthesepatientsandtheirfamilies,itoffersgreaterhopeforacureandabetterqualityoflife.

Itisourreputationforqualityandindependencethathasmadeusinternationalresearchleadersandensureswetrulydeliverworld-classcare,locally.

We currently have a number of active trials and investigations underway, supported by our HaematologySpecialists,ResearchNursesandDataManagers.

TheClinicalResearchUnitisfinanciallyindependentandnotforprofitandwithlittlepublicfunding, we rely heavily on grants, donations and local fundraising to focus on the research priorities of our patient population.

Our unique Multi Disciplinary Team model delivers exceptional benefits for our patients.Thewayweoperatedeliversanefficientprocessforquality,documented,multidisciplinarypeer review of our patients with haematological malignancies. It is an essential tool in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of patients with cancer.

• TheentireMultiDisciplinaryTeammeetseveryThursdaymorning,withcompleted ProFormaspresentedbythetreatingPhysicians.

• TheTeamdiscussestheproposedtreatmentandmanagementofeachpatientandwherepossible, consensus is reached.

• TheProFormaisverifiedbytheChairandconvertedtoread-onlyPDFforfilingandpostingto the referring doctor. This also becomes part of the patient’s electronic medical records.

• TheentireteamthenundertakesWardroundstogetheronThursdays.

Sydney Survivorship Centre

TheSydneySurvivorshipCentrewasestablishedatConcordHospitalin2013,toprovideholistic care and individualised support for adult survivors of cancer. It provides a Multi DisciplinaryClinicwithaCancerSpecialist,CancerNurse,Dietician,PsychologistandExercisePhysiologistforpatientswithlocalisedcancer(breast,colorectal,haematological)whoarecompletingprimarytreatment.Supportgroups,educationalresources,publicforums,workshops and classes are also provided.To make a referral or learn more about the survivorship program, please call 9767 7487.

In addition to providing treatment and care for blood cancer patients and leading the way in blood cancer research, Concord Haematology also has a strong focus on providing education for our patients and their families.

WearepartoftheUniversityofSydney’sAcademicStaffandprovideeducationforstudentsand doctors at all levels.

We regularly provide educational seminars, lectures and forums, presented by specialists and experts in their respective fields for the benefit of our patients, their families and other medical staff.

WehavehostedsuccessfulPatientEducationForumsforLymphoma,MyelomaandWaldenstrom’s Macroglobulinaemia, with presentations from world leaders in these blood cancers.

Ouraimistoprovideongoingeducationalopportunitiesthroughouttheyear.

Associate Professor Judith Trotman MBChB, FRACP, FRCPA, Spec Cert in Clinical Research (Oncology)

Judith Trotman is the Director of the Clinical ResearchUnitandhasparticularexpertiseinthe management of blood cancers specifically lymphoid malignancies.Shehasbeenastaff specialist at Concord Hospital since 2000.Afterayear’ssabbaticalatoneofthe world’s leading lymphoma centres in France,JudithreturnedconvincedthatatConcord Hospital we have the capacity to deliver world’s best care, locally. To this end she and her colleagues have built one of the largestclinicalresearchunitsinAustralia.Sheis an author on the international guidelines in staging and response assessment of Lymphoma and demonstrated the predictive powerofPETresponseassessmentforFollicular Lymphoma(JournalofClinicalOncologyandLancetHaematology).SheisamemberoftheAustralasianLeukaemiaandLymphomaGroup(ALLG)ScientificAdvisoryCommitteeandistheALLGChiefInvestigatorforanumberofnationalLymphomatrialsand a study of melphalan pharmacokinetics /pharmacodynamicsinMyeloma transplantation.

Dr Ilona Cunningham Head of Haematology at Concord Hospital MBBS, FRACP

Ilona Cunningham leads a partnership ofeightHaematologists.Sheisoneofanumber of cancer specialists, who has worked tirelessly to establish the Concord Cancer Centre and is a vocal advocate for holistic, multidisciplinary care for cancer patientsinthelocalcommunity.Sheislobbying hard for a state of the art building, which will ensure cutting edge clinical care for cancer patients, including radiotherapy andclinicaltrials.SheisalsoChairoftheMedicalStaffCouncilatConcordHospital,advocating an extensive redevelopment for the Hospital, to benefit all patients and allowitsdoctorstodeliverworld-classcarein this hospital. Ilona trained in Melbourne andatStanfordUniversityinCaliforniaasapost-doctoralfellowinHaematology.SheisafellowofTheRoyalAustralasianCollege of Physicians and a member of a number of organisations, including the AmericanSocietyofHaematology.Ilonahasalong-standingandactiveinterestinclinical research in Myelodysplasia and AML in elderly patients, Myeloproliferative Neoplasms, CML and other haematologic malignancies as well as ITP.

Dr Vivien Chen MBBS (University Medal, University of Sydney), BA, PhD, FRACP, FRCPA

VivienChencompletedherNHMRCPostDoctoralFellowshipatHarvardMedicalSchool,BostonUSA.Herclinicalinterestsare Thrombosis and Bleeding disorders, Haemoglobinopathies, iron metabolism, Lymphoma and Leukaemia.Sherunsthespecialised Thrombosis Clinic at Concord Hospital. Vivien Chen leads research groups over two sites: Coagulation in Cancer at theLowyCancerResearchCentre,UNSWandVascularandPlateletBiologyattheANZACResearchInstitute,Concord.Herresearch is aimed at understanding the mechanisms of blood clot formation, cancer related thrombosis and platelet biology, new pathways in platelet activation and their implicationsinhealthanddisease.Sheiscommitted to developing new diagnostics and drug therapies to predict and prevent Thrombosis in cardiovascular disease and Venous Thrombosis.

Dr Jane Estell B.Med (Honours), FRACP, FRCPA

JaneEstellgraduatedinMedicinewithHonoursfromNewcastleUniversityin1988before training in Haematology Clinical and Pathology(Haematology)atPrinceofWales/Prince Henry and Westmead Hospitals in Sydney.DuringthistimeshewasactivelyinvolvedinClinicalResearchinareasincluding Thrombosis and Haemostasis, as well as malignant haematology (Lymphoma and Leukaemia) and allogeneic transplantation.AfteratimeinWesternSydneyatWestmead,BlacktownandLiverpoolHospitalsshejoinedtheConcordHaematologyUnitin2004.WithapassionforClinicalResearchsheisprincipalinvestigator in clinical studies into Follicular Lymphoma, CLL and is responsible for the Multiple Myeloma clinical trial portfolio at ConcordHospitalHaematologyResearchUnit.Shehasextensiveexperienceandinterestinallareasofmalignantandnon-malignant haematology as well as teaching medicalstudents,juniordoctorsandnursingstaff.

RobinGasiorowskiundertookmedicaltrainingatCambridgeUniversityandUniversityCollegeLondonbeforemovingtoAustraliain2004.FollowingspecialistHaematologytrainingatRoyalPrinceAlfredand Concord Hospitals he now works as a clinical and laboratory Haematologist looking after a broad range of patients with both malignantandnon-malignantHaematologicalconditions. He has a particular interest in myeloid malignancies and is currently completingaPhDthroughSydneyUniversity,developing novel antibody therapies for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.Forthepasttwoyears,RobinhasrunthehaematologyteachingprogramforSydneyUniversitymedical students based at Concord Hospital.

Dr Nicole Wong Doo Gcert (ClinTeach), MBBS (Hons), FRACP, FRCPA

NicoleWongDooisaclinicalandlaboratoryhaematologistandanHonoraryResearchAssociateattheCancerEpidemiologyCentre,CancerCouncilVictoria.Shecompleted her haematology training in Sydney,followedbyafellowshipatthe Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute in Melbourne.Hermajorresearchinterestis in investigating the role of epigenetics in Multiple Myeloma and Non Hodgkin Lymphoma.Sheiscommittedtoparticipating in clinical trial research and is also involved in epidemiological research aimed at evaluating and improving the outcomesofpatientsonapopulation-widelevel.Shehasbroadclinicalexperienceinthemanagementofmalignantandnon-malignantHaematological diseases.

EmmaVernerisaclinicalandlaboratoryHaematologistwhojoinedtheConcordHaematologyteamasaStaffSpecialistin2012.SheisfromSydneyoriginallybut completed her Haematology training inMelbourneatTheAustinHospitalandtheRoyalMelbourneHospital.Herclinicalinterests are in malignant Haematology, in particular Lymphoma, Leukaemia and autologous bone marrow transplant. Shehasdiverseclinicalexperienceinthe diagnosis and management of both malignantandnon-malignantHaematologicalconditions.Shehasastronginterestinclinical research and is the head of the ApheresisUnitatConcordHospital.Shebelieves in individualising patient care and providing not only the best treatment options available,butthesupportrequiredthrougheverystageofthepatientjourney.

AlessandraBianchigraduatedinmedicinefromtheUniversityofMilanin1981andsubsequentlyspecialisedinhaematologyattheInstituteofHaematologyinRomebeforetakingapositionattheUniversityofRomeintheBoneMarrowTransplantationUnitoftheInstituteofHaematology.ShetrainedinLondonwithDrMalcolmBrennerinthelate1980sworkingontheroleoftumournecrosisfactorinBcellmalignancysurvival.ShemovedtoSydneyin1990andbeganwork as a Haematological pathologist at RoyalPrinceAlfredandConcordHospitals.ShewasappointedasastaffspecialistatConcordHospitalin2004andhasaninterestin transfusion medicine, in coagulation and in the investigation of prothrombotic disorders.SheisheadoftheHaematologyLaboratoryandTransfusionServicesatConcord Hospital.

# Patients who choose to use their Private health insurance assist the Hospital as the financial benefit received is put back into patient care. Private Patients will not be sent any invoices for gap fees, except on the rare occasion when they need a specialist VMO surgeon or anaesthetist whilst they are in Hospital. In this circumstance the patient would be informed and they can elect to change back to being a Public Patient.
