1.3 Locationandclimate

1.3.1 NationalDairyResearchInstituteislocatedonthenorthernoutskirtsofKarnalcityinHaryana,on theNationalHighwayNo.1,about 125 kmsNorthofDelhi. It iswellconnectedby roadandrailbeingonthemain trunk route connectingDelhiwithAmritsarandChandigarh.

1.3.2 The elevation of Karnal is 250meters,abovemeansealevel,latitude29.43Nandlongitude77.2 E.Minimum temperaturefalls tonear freezingpoint inwinterandmaximumgoesupto45°Cinsummer.Theannualrainfallisabout70cms.

1.4 Organization

1.4.1 TheDirector is the administrativeHeadof the Instituteand its regional stations.He is assistedby three JointDirectors inadministration,coordinationofacademic,researchandextensionactivitiesofvariousdivisionsandregionalstations.

1.1 NationalDairyResearch Institute,DeemedUniversity (here-in-after referred toas theInstitute),servesastheprimecentreforResearch,Extension andManpowerDevelopmentProgrammesof thecountry in the fieldofDairying.TheInstitutehasdevelopedfromtheerstwhileImperialInstituteofAnimalHusbandryandDairyingestablishedatBangalorein1923.ThemaincampusofNDRIisnowlocatedatKarnal inHaryanaState. Ithastworegionalstations:SouthernRegionalStationatBangaloreandEasternRegionalStationlocatedatKalyani(WestBengal).

1.5 FacilitiesinEducation

Therearemodern facilities fordeliveryoflecturesastheclassroomsareprovidedwithinternet&multimediagadgets.EachDivisionhaswellequippedUG&PGLaboratoriesforconductofpracticalclasses.ForPost-graduateresearchwork,wellequipped specializedlaboratoriesareavailableindifferentdivision.MostoffacultyhaveinternationalexposureandpossessdegreesearnedfromreputedIndianandforeignuniversities.Additionallysubject-matterspecialistsfromthedifferentcountriesoftheworldcometotheInstituteas consultants on teaching/research/assignments. The teaching curricula areperiodicallyupdatedkeeping inview therecentscientificdevelopmentsandtofulfiltheneedsofthefastdevelopingdairyindustry.Centresofexcellence inmilkproduction,milkprocessingandbiotechnologyhavebeenestablishedattheInstituteunderthefinancialassistance fromUNDP/ICAR/DBT.TheInstitutehassevenhostelswithmodernfacilities,ofwhichtwoareexclusivelyforgirlstudents.Marriedstudentsarealsoprovidedwithseparatehostelfacilities.AnInternationalHostel is also available for the studentscomingfromabroad.

1.6 FacilitiesinDairyProduction

The Institutemaintains a Livestockherdhavingabout1600animalsconsistingofdifferentbreedsofcattle(KaranSwiss,KaranFries,Tharparkar,Sahiwal),Murrahbuffaloes

andgoats.Theanimalsarebeingmaintainedandfedasperstandardscientificpractices.Severalprogrammesarebeingcarriedoutforattaininghigherproductivityperanimal.ModernStateofArtMilkingParlours–FlatBarn and Vario-Tendom systems havebeencommissionedforefficientandcleanmilkproduction.Theaverageproductionofmilkperday in theCattleYardvariesbetween3500to4500litersduringdifferentmonths.Theanimalsaremanagedunderloosehousingsystem.Tomanagetheelitecowsandbuffaloes,theStateofArtsheltersystemwith facilitiesof individualanimalfeedinganddatarecordingareavailable.Afodderfarmofapproximately400hectaressupplies freshgreen fodders likeMaize,Cowpea,BerseemandOats.Awellequippedworkshop isavailable formaintaining thefarmequipment andmachinery.Modeldairyunitsfordemonstrationofpackageofpracticeswithhighproducingdairycowsandbuffaloesarealsomaintained for thebenefitoffarmersandtrainees.

1.7 FacilitiesinMilkProcessing

Awellequippeddairyplant forhandling10,000 litresmilkperdaywas installed in1962andrenovatedintheyear1984.Basicequipments are available forprocessingdifferent typeofmilk, fat richproducts,indigenousmilkproducts,condensedanddriedmilkproducts,varioustypesofcheeseandfermentedmilkproducts.Facilitiesareavailablefortheproductdevelopmentand

1.9 ConsultancyServices

InpursuanceofthepolicyofGovernmentofIndiawhichlaysstressonthedevelopmentofdomestictechnologyanditseffectivetransfertotheindustry,aConsultancyProcessingCell(CPC)hasbeenconstituted.ThereservoiroftechnologydevelopedonthebasisofR&DworkdoneattheInstituteistransferredfortheinfusionofscienceandtechnologyintheareaofDairyProduction,DairyProcessingandDairyManagementonprofessionalbasisthroughtheconsultancyservices.TheCPCextendshelp for strengthening thedairy industryin thecountrybyprovidingR&Dsupporttowardsnewproduct/processdevelopment,equipmentdevelopment,problemsolvingresearchandalsoundertakes sponsoredresearchprogrammes. The consultancyservicesarealsoprovidedforthepreparationoftechno-economicfeasibilityreportsfornewprojects,vettingofprojectproposalsreceivedthroughfinancialinstitutions,testingofdairyproductsforexport/importetc.

Specialized trainingprogrammesarealsoconductedat this Institute from time totimefor impartingtrainingtothestudents/entrepreneurs.Therevenueearnedthroughthe consultancy services is utilized forstrengtheningtheR&Dinfrastructureoftheinstitute.

1.10 NationalLibraryinDairying

The Institute Library has an impressivecollectionofliteratureonDairyScienceandrelatedsubjects.Morethan200periodicalsaresubscribedtokeeptrackofthecurrentscientific/technicaldevelopments. Thereare89,451volumeswhichincludes51,045books,32,457boundjournals,4,186theses,268microfiches,1,500CDs.Libraryhasanexcellent computer sectionhaving fiftyworkstationsforstudentsandstaffoftheinstitute.Studentsusethesetogetcurrentinformationintheadvancedresearchareasandforcommunication.A view of Model Dairy Plant

togivepractical training to the studentsfor familiarizingthemwiththeoperationalaspectsofacommercialdairy. Duringtheyear1989aRevolvingFundSchemewasintroduced in ExperimentalDairyunderAP cess FundProjectby theMinistryofAgriculture.Intheyear2004,ExperimentalDairy has been granted InternationalStandardsCertificationforitsqualityandFoodSafetyPolicyi.e.ISO90012000HACCP-15000.InMarch2010,ExperimentalDairyhasbeencertifiedforISO9001-2008&HACC-15000.

1.8 ModelDairyPlant

Withtheobjectiveofprovidingfacilitiesforimpartingin-planttrainingtothestudentsofNDRIDeemedUniversity,acommercialdairyhasbeenestablishedinthecampusofNDRIunder theauspicesofOperationFloodProgramme.ThedairyplanthasStateoftheArtFacilitatesforvariousprocesses.

Theplanthasbeendesigned tohandle60,0000litersofmilkperdaywithacapitalinvestmentofRs.11crore.Inthefirstphaseoftheproject,thedairyplantisequippedwithfacilitiesforprocessingandpackingofmarketmilk,icecreamandghee.Duringthesecondphase,facilitiesforcondensinganddryingoperationwouldbeadded.StudentsofNDRIaretrainedinthevariousoperationsintheplantsothattheygetnecessaryexposureofmanagingthemanufacturingoperationsundercommercialenvironment.Thisgivesthemnecessaryskillsandselfconfidencetomanagemiddlelevelmanagerialpositioninthedairyindustry.

TheLibrary alsoprovidesPhotocopying,DocumentScanningandPrinting facility.ComputerisedIssue-Returnandreservationofbooks isdonebyusingLIBSYSLibrarysoftwarePackageswithWebOPAC.

The Library,NDRI is an activepartnerofNAIPSub-project“StrengtheningofDigitalLibrary and InformationManagementunder NARS (eGranth)”. The projecthas major mandate to have a unioncatalogue of all participating librarieswith integration/collaborationofOnlineComputerLibraryCenter (OCLC)”. In thisproject theparticipating libraries are touploaded their catalogue/ database ofalltheavailablebooksjournalsandotherresourcesonOCLCplateforminMARC21format.Presently45,000cataloguerecordsofLibrary,NDRIavailableonWorldCat.

In view of non-standard formats, dataconversionissuesandotherlimitationsinexistingLibsysLibrarymanagementsystemandadvance featuresandcompliance tointernationalstandardsofKoha-LMS.NAIPapprovedadditionalfundsofRs.2lakhsforimplementationofKohaundertheeGranthsub-project.

Libraryhassuccessfullymigratedcataloguerecordsofbooks (46184), Theses (3663),Standards(2981),Annualreports(1001)andpamphlets(1500)etc.excepthindibooksandperiodicals.Inpresenttimelibraryisinprocessofmigrationofperiodicalrecordsandcurrentlyreceivedliterature.

1.11 ComputerFacilities ComputerCentreisacentralfacilitytoprovide

computationalsupportandtrainingtothescientists,students,researchscholarsandtheadministration.There isawellestablishedComputerLaboratoryequippedwith latestcomputersystemstogetherwithlaserprinters.ThecomputersystemssupportFORTRAN,C,C++andVisualProgramminglanguages.A largenumberofsoftwarepackagessuchas LIMDEP, LSML-76,MATLAB,MS-Office2003/2007,MySQLServer2008,SAS9.2,SPSS18,SYSTAT,TORA,etc.,areavailableindifferentenvironments,i.e.,LINUX,Windows/WindowsServer(98,2000,2008,XP,NT).

TheAgricultureResearchInformationSystem(ARIS)cellestablishedwiththehelpof ICARisfullyfunctionalwiththeinternetande-mailconnectivity throughNationalKnowledgeNetwork(NKN)node(1gbps)providedbytheNationalInformaticsCentre(NIC)Govt.ofIndiaandthroughleasedlineprovidedbyERNETIndiaLtd.TheInstitutehasaLocalAreaNetwork(LAN)connectingall thedivisions/sectionsthroughopticalfiber/UTPcabletocoverthemainbuildingandADSLswitchesfordistantlylocatedbuildings,providingconnectivitytoall theScientists,Technical/AdministrativeOfficers/Students.Studenthostelsarealsoconnected to InstituteLANthroughWi-Finetwork toenable thestudents toaccessinternetandlibraryresourcesroundtheclock.

3.0 ACADeMIC PRoGRAMMes

2.2 EasternRegionalStation

2.2.1 Eastern Regional Station The EasternRegional Station (ERS) ofNationalDairyResearch Institute (NDRI), established in1964, is locatedatKalyani in thedistrictofNadiainWestBengal.Itservesasavitallinkbetween themain Institute and thedistantEasternandNorthEasternpartsofthecountry. Kalyani iswell linkedby railandroadwithKolkataandissituatedatadistanceofnearly50kmfromtheheartofthecity(Kolkata).ThenearestrailwaystationisKalyanioftheEasternRailway,locatedatadistanceof2Kmfromtheinstitutecampus.

2.2.4 The round the year extension servicesincludesTrainingprogrammes,Exhibitions,Health & fertility camps, Off-campustrainingcampsetc.TrainingProgrammeson“ScientificDairyFarming”and“AnimalNutrition and Fodder Production” foreducated unemployed rural youthare organized at regular interval. Fieldvisits, capsule courses and orientationprogrammes are also organized for thefarmersofDairyCooperativeSocietiesandNGOsonrequest.

3.1 B.teCh (DAIRy teChnoLoGy)

3.1.1 Thisdegreeprogrammeoffers intensivetraininginprocessingandqualitycontrolofmilkanddairyproductsandengineeringaspectsofdairyprocessingequipments.

3.1.2 The duration of the B.Tech. (DairyTechnology)isfouryears.Thecourseisrunundersemestersystem.Oneacademicyearconsistsoftwosemesterseachofabout18week’sduration.ThestudentsaregivenoneyearIn-plantTrainingatModelDairyPlantlocatedatInstitute’spremises.

3.1.3 The candidatemust havepassed 10+2Senior Secondary Examination of theCentral Board of Secondary Educationor any other examinationwithin scopeand standard found tobeequivalent totheSenior SecondaryExaminationof anIndianUniversity/Boardafter aperiodof12 years of study. The last two years ofsuch10+2examinationshouldhavepapersin Physics, Chemistry,Mathematics andEnglishasacoresubject.Candidatemust

havepassedthequalifyingexaminationsasenumeratedabovesecuringnotlessthan50%ofthetotalmarksforGeneral,OBCandUPScategoriesand40%ofthetotalmarksfor SC/ST and Physically handicappedcategories.Candidatesdue to appear atthe final examination given above canalsoapply subject to theirdeclarationofresult before thedateof counselingbyICAR. Candidatewith a compartment/supplementaryinanyofthesubjectswillnotbeeligible.

3.1.4 Admission shall bemade on the basisof merit through All India EntranceExaminationconductedbytheEducationDivision, Indian Council of AgriculturalResearch, Krishi AnusandhanBhavan-II,Pusa,NewDelhi.

3.1.5 Onewhoisappearingfor10+2examinationintheyear2013canalsoapplysubjecttohis/herproducing10+2passingcertificateonthedateofcounseling.
