SAGEWOOD SCHOOL

Educating the Whole Child

2 Information Booklet

SAGEWOOD SCHOOL HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

A strong-willed mother's determination to provide a holistic and stress-

free education for her children was the principle on which Sagewood

School was founded in 1985.

Jill Conradie, a mother of three young children, started a school in a flat in

Cyrildene embodying her ideas. The school was named Sagewood, "sage"

being an indigenous tree in our country. A year later the 'school in a room'

was too small with 65 learners and necessitated a move to new premises.

The school relocated to two other places and eventually settled in the Old

Johannesburg Children's Home in Observatory with 200 children. The

first principal, John de Jager, an educator with immense foresight was

specifically chosen to extend the school and see it grow.

As a result of these two visionaries, Sagewood Education centre, an

institute that offered academic excellence and community service,

progressed steadily and embraced the values of non-racialism, non-

denominationalism and multi-culturalism in the environment of an

apartheid South Africa.

The school is owned by, The Sagewood Foundation, a non-profit Section

21 Company. The school does not promote a religious denomination, but

rather teaches respect for all religions. Sagewood School is

demographically representative of the new South Africa. Diversity has

been one of its corner stones since the school’s inception. Sagewood

today, offers a full spectrum of co-ed school education and has a separate,

Pre-Primary, Primary and College.

PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL

At Sagewood Pre-Primary, our children learn through play. While our Grade 000 and Grade 00 learners are

afforded more of an opportunity to learn in a flexible manner, the Grade 0 learners have to follow a more

structured programme which will help them to make the transition to Grade 1 that much easier. The Grade 0

and Grade 1 teachers work really closely with each other throughout the year to ensure that all aspects are

adequately covered before the Grade 0 children reach Grade 1.

Every week, a different theme is taught with the intention of making our learners more aware of how to

properly interact with other children within a community set-up. The children hail from different

backgrounds, speak different languages, and follow different religions but all come together, respecting and

appreciating their uniqueness. Our children are empowered to deal with challenging issues like how to

speak out when they are not happy or how to interact with a child that is being particularly difficult.

The engaging lessons, exciting and innovative activities and the warm, supportive and nurturing

environment makes Sagewood Pre-Primary the ideal school for your child. We can definitely boast about

our fully qualified, kind and caring teachers who go the extra mile to ensure that your child’s learning

experience is the best and most memorable one. Your child will learn within a safe, protected and

supervised educational facility.

Activities

Whatever the topic discussed or activity engaged in, our curriculum is designed to introduce even

PREPARATORY SCHOOL

The preparatory school is a wonderful, vibrant and exciting learning environment that caters for

learners from Grades 1-7. Lessons are engaging, interactive and meaningful. The diversity

among the staff and learners makes every experience encountered realistic and is reflective of

our current society. Teachers make use of a variety of tools and technology to reach every single

child in order to build on their strengths and develop their weaknesses. In our aim to educate the

“whole child”, we strive to create a balance between the academics, culture and sport.

We aim to equip our learners with the skills they require to cope with any situation, be it

academic or personal. The teachers go to great lengths to ensure that the learners get the best

quality education, they are approachable, flexible and always place the needs of the children

first. Our open door policy and different channels of communication make it easy for the

parents and staff to maintain healthy and positive relationships.

Upon entering the school premises, you get greeted by a whole group of friendly faces and

instantly feel like this is your home away from home. You will immediately feel like an integral
