Information and Products for use in Wash Down Settings
24
Washdown settings demand the highest performance
electrical components for power distribution to equipment,
devices, switches, appliances and lighting systems. Washdown
procedures demand connections capable of exceeding direct
infiltrated with water or becoming disengaged during the water
blast. Additionally, it is of vital importance that all connections
used in washdown areas are resistant to corrosion or rust due to
any residual or standing water remaining even after blowdown
operations.
Water and corrosion from water are some of the highest threats
to safe and reliable connections in food and beverage manufac-
turing. The estimated cost of corrosion to the food processing
industry alone exceeds $2.1 billion annually, not including labor
and downtime involved in equipment failure.
quality requirements and it’s excellent corrosion resistant proper-
ties. There are, however, many other materials and designs that
are equally suitable for wash down settings found in beverage
production, food machinery, cutlery and utensils, commercial
and restaurant equipment and other appliances. Thomas & Betts
electrical products are designed, manufactured and tested to
you multiple time and cost-saving options and materials to ad-
dress your specific application.

Cleaning is one of the most important aspects of any food
cleaning efforts, many packaging machine manufacturers de-
sign systems with all-stainless steel construction. Because stain-
less steel resists corrosion more than aluminum or other metals,
it is highly recommended for components necessary to power
equipment in areas of frequent wash downs and those with
effective in preventing metal flakes, caused by corrosion in moist
environments, from accidentally entering food products during
the packaging cycle.
Additionally, there are important safety steps taken to prevent
foreign objects from falling into open vats or grinding systems.
Many plants have banned personnel from using ordinary main-
tenance supplies or carrying personal items that can pass un-
noticed through metal detectors, x-ray equipment and standard
visual detection systems. Those responsible for managing safety
programs in food processing plants are actively seeking alterna-
tive materials that are reliably located with commonly used
detection equipment. Of equal importance is the challenge to
-
tamination of food processing areas during routine maintenance
activities without sacrificing the quality of the installation or
extending labor costs.
The following selected products represent materials that offer
the greatest degree of safety for your raceway applications.
Additionally, some selected T&B products are highlighted that
provide excellent solutions for preventing food contamination
during routine maintenance in your plant.

From the moment that ingredients enter processing operations, concern for safety is paramount. There are many opportunities in the
the system and damage the quality of the product. Continuous monitoring of operations is required to prevent these occurences.
Information and Products for Constant Operation

With any electrical equipment or wiring installationoperating at line voltages in continuous operation, cable and
component damage or incorrect installation that permits
moisture or contamination can lead to equipment failure, arcing
plant, the quality of the electrical system may be compromised
by materials inferior for the application or components poorly
designed to match the performance of machinery or other
processing equipment. Additionally, it’s important to provide
your maintenance team the information and training necessary
to correctly install critical structural systems for safe processing
and packaging.
Food producers are seeking increased return from
invested capital and drive for greatest efficiency, operating
to preclude the loss of an asset during normal operations, many
plants develop predictive maintenance systems that quantify
a piece of equipment. Predictive maintenance is the lowest cost
of any type of maintenance (compared to preventative or run-
to-failure), but is dependent on fine-tuning information about
performance changes and relies on the integrity of the initial
products for your installation and partner with a resource that
supports your maintenance needs.
