Shopping in Xela
Groceries: All the markets have fresh fruit and vegetables. Generally speaking, prices go up as you get closer to the center. So the Terminal Minerva market is the cheapest, followed by La Democracia, Las Flores, and the Centro Comercial by the park. You can get most everything else you need at these markets as well (particularly in La Democracia and at Minerva) but if you feel the need for a true supermarket experience there is always Despensa Familiar or Paiz. Other interesting natural foods (granola, etc.) are available at Al Natur (#10). Finally,
Used Clothing: The Minerva market has a big section full of used clothes from the USA. You can find amazing deals here. Bargain away, but look particularly for the 3Q piles. Also check out the many clothing stores scattered around the city.
New Clothing: La Democracia market has lots of nice clothing — Guatemalan-made in the street stalls and more expensive imported stuff in the shops.
Electronics: There are many electronics shops along 12th Avenida (“La Doce”), but you can also find decent deals in the shop right on Parque Central. If you’re looking for something for an apartment check out La Pulguita along the side of the cemetery near Parque El Calvario.
Alcohol: El Rosario on 8th Calle (D12-21) near Mercado Las Flores has good prices, but if you can’t make it there you’ll be okay in any tienda.
Souvenirs: Parque Central on the first Sunday of each month is best, but also look in the Centro Comercial next to the park or inside of the central market in La Democracia.
Gear: La Aventura in Mont Blanc (”paiz” in the microbuses).
Cooperative Products: A wide variety of fair-trade and organic products can be found at Café Red. Your purchases here support local cooperatives. Check out their fair trade gift basket for a great christmas present.

We’ve listed here a few of the many volunteer opportunities available in and around Xela. If you don’t see anything you are interested in but still want to do something, you should talk to Entremundos about what else is available.
EntreMundos' Volunteer Placement Programme offers professional and friendly advice to help you find the best possible volunteer placement. Our Volunteer Drop-in Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 5pm in our offices in Quetzaltenango, 6a calle 7-31, Zone 1, 7761-2179. Alternatively you can search our online Volunteer Opportunities Database where we have information on over 160 organisations seeking volunteers in all fields of work, www.entremundos.org.
Asociación Nuevos Horizontes seeks volunteers to devise and organise fun, educational, and creative activities for the children who live in the shelter. We also need volunteers to supervise and plan activities for the children at our day-care center that serves working mothers. Volunteers can also help organise excursions for the children, many of whom have few opportunities to leave the shelter. Help is also needed with fundraising events, publicity and grant applications.

Tejidos Cotzal is a women's weaving cooperative located in the village of San Juan Cotzal, about 30 minutes east of Nebaj. This region was one of the worst hit hard during the civil war and is still one of the poorest in the country. You can help support the community by purchasing its products at Cafe Al-Natur or Manos Creativos. You can also visit the community and gain an insight into Mayan life and regional history through its eco-tourism program.
