Prayers Requests

As United Methodists,

we were called by

Bishop Gary Mueller

during the month of

February to focus our

prayers on Spiritual

Revival. On Saturday, February 25,

Goddard UMC held a prayer vigil

during the hours of 9 am—2 pm in

Young Hall. The host for the vigil was

the Goddard Discipleship Ministry

Team. Elizabeth Eubanks was the prayer

vigil coordinator. The greeters were:

Barbara Kennedy, Geri Reeves, Frankie

and Jeff Allred, Deanna Friedman, Linda

Porter, Betty Forrest, Jean Woodward,

Susan and Ken Pate, Rick and Betty

Bodine, Betty Morkemo, and Lynne and

Jon Gustafson. Refreshments were

provided by the UM Women and UM

Men. 75 people attended the prayer vigil.

Thank you to all who participated. Going

forward, please continue to pray for

spiritual revival.

The Community Rescue Mission

The Community Rescue Mission, located at 4th and F Street, phone 479-782-1443, partners with area churches to meet spiritual and physical needs by providing meals, a place to stay, and church services. Last year, 1,147 clients checked in for 16,273 nights of shelter and 43,354 meals were served. Until I became associated with the Mission, I was not aware of the extent of the need in our community. Please be in prayer for the homeless and those that work to help them.

Thanks,

Harry Tommey

Our Goddard Food Pantry helped 638 people during the month of January. Thank you to those of

you who donated cloth bags for us to give to people who were walking to the pantry and then walking

back home. I wish you could have seen the smile on their faces when they realized how much easier

it would be for them to get home with the groceries. Sometimes it is the little things we do not think

about that are a big help to the persons who need our help the most.

Thank you to one of our Goddard members for donating some warm coats that we gave to some

children this past month. We also want to thank one of our church members who brought gloves

and sock caps. What a blessing your gifts were!

Thank you to Betty and Vic Campbell for bringing us a box

of hand soap to add to our pantry sacks last week.

Most of all, our continued thanks to each of you who continue to serve in our Food Pantry Ministry

and those of you who continue to donate funds to keep our Pantry doors open. “...For I was hungry

and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink...I tell you the

truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me…”

Eating for a Healthy Colon The focus this month for a message

and reminder concerning our health is

how a healthy diet can protect against

colon disorders.

My father always said “you are what

you eat” and the older I get the more I see

how true this really is. Although it can

sometimes be hard to follow all dietary

rules for good health, it is never too late or

too early to begin. Just as diet can have a

positive or negative impact on heart, brain

and bone health, your colons overall

health can be affected by what you eat.

The colon is a crucial part of the

digestive system, and many different

conditions can cause it to work

improperly. Some of these include

inflammatory bowel disease such as

ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease;

diverticular disease; irritable bowel

syndrome and colorectal cancer.

Treatment for these conditions

includes diet and lifestyle modifications,

medications and/or surgery.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most

serious colon diseases. It’s the third most

common cancer and the third deadliest

cancer in the U.S. Risk factors for colon

cancer over the age of 50. The risks

include family history, previous polyps;

inflammatory bowel disease; smoking and

heavy alcohol use. A strong correlation of

obesity combined with the above factors

adds additional risk.

The American Cancer Society

reports that the links between diet, weight,

exercise and colorectal cancer risk are

some of the strongest for any type of

cancer. Fewer than 10% of colon cancers

are hereditary, which means a lot of it is

our lifestyle. Therefore, good nutrition is

an important aspect of good colon health.

To help promote colon health follow

these five diet recommendations:

1. Limit red meat consumption and

steer clear of processed meats.

2. Hold the sugar (contributes

to weight gain).

3. Up your fiber intake.

4. Drink your milk.

5. Choose grains wisely (whole gains

are better).

While eating healthy can keep your

colon happy, the most powerful way to

prevent is through screening as discussed

and scheduled through your personal

physician.

Thank you.

Thank you, Goddard United Methodist

Women, for providing food for our Goddard

Spiritual Revival Prayer Vigil on Feb. 25.

Our circles are actively involved in doing so

many helpful things for our church, for our

neighbors, and for missions across our country and

the world. They are taking this “Inside-Out Thing”

seriously!

What’s up next for our UMW? So glad you

asked. One circle has been involved in some art

work recently (with the help of the talented Vickie

Anderson), and now they are planning on making

small flower pots to plant and give to our neighbors

across the street from our church. All 4 of our

circles will continue with their mission focus,

including gathering supplies for UMCOR and the

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, filling Easter

Eggs for the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, and we

have begun planning for UMW Sunday to be held

on April 23.

Several of us will be attending the NW District

Spiritual Growth Study, “The Bible and Human

Sexuality” on April 8. There is still time for you to

register to attend. Please let Elizabeth Eubanks

know. This study will be held in Russellville.

Oh what a blessing it is to be a part of

Goddard United Methodist Women!
