COMMUNITY FACILITIES

Mary Washington Hospital, in nearby Fredericksburg, provides excellent care for Caroline Countyresidents. This 412-bed (all private rooms) regional medical facility is equipped with the latest inmedical technology and services. Among its many services include the following special care units:Fast Track Emergency Department, Maternity Center, Renal Dialysis, Oncology, Geriatrics,Pediatrics, Same-day Surgery, and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. A 60-bed, freestanding psychiatricfacility was the first to be completed on this medical campus. Hospital affiliates include the CancerCenter of Virginia, a medical mall, nursing homes, and a seniors living community. Additionalmedical facilities, including medical emergency facilities, are located in Richmond, including theMedical College of Virginia Hospital and several other major hospitals. Emergency medical groundand air transport service is available.

A public health center and two private clinics also operate within the county.

Six doctors and four dentists practice in the county.

Numerous nursing homes, in both the Fredericksburg and Richmond areas, provide care to theelderly.

Sixty-six Churches in Caroline County represent several major Protestant denominations. Catholicand Greek churches and Jewish synagogues are located in nearby Fredericksburg and Richmond.

The County has a public library system with three branches, all having Internet access, and acollection of over 35,000 volumes.

convenience retail and service centers throughout the county. Spotsylvania Mall, near Fredericksburg,contains over 100 stores and is the major retail center for the Fredericksburg area. An outlet mall, insouthern Spotsylvania County, also offers easy access to shopping for county residents. With theRichmond area about 35 miles away, residents can take advantage of many varied shoppingopportunities. The "professional shopper" will also take advantage of access to the Commonwealth'snumber one tourist attraction, the Potomac Mills Mall--north on Interstate 95 about 50 miles.

The close proximity of Caroline County to Fredericksburg; Washington, D.C.; and Richmond allowsresidents to experience a great variety of entertainment, sporting events, and cultural offerings. MaryWashington College in Fredericksburg presents regular theatrical and musical programs. Amateurtheater is available locally to either participate in or simply enjoy. For those who enjoy the mountainsand shorelines, Caroline County is ideally situated for a short jaunt in either direction for year-roundrecreation and relaxation.

LIFESTYLE

The county offers an extensive public recreation program, including organized athletics andinstructional programs for all ages. Eleven ball fields, six tennis courts, basketball courts, soccerfields, picnic pavilions, and an 18-hole golf course comprise some of the county's recreation facilities.Several recreation activities, such as softball leagues and major special events, are also sponsored byvarious service organizations. The Fredericksburg Country Club, in adjacent Spotsylvania County,has many Caroline County residents among its membership. The club features excellent golfing,tennis, swimming, and dining facilities.

The Rappahannock and Mattaponi Rivers, which border the county to the north and south, provide thesetting for excellent boating and fishing. The North Anna River borders the county to the southwest.About 70,000 acres of the Fort A. P. Hill military reservation, east of Bowling Green, have beendesignated as a cooperative wildlife management area and offer superb hunting. Fort A. P. Hill hasalso become the permanent site of the National Boy Scout Jamboree.

Kings Dominion, a major amusement/theme park, is located just outside the border of CarolineCounty along Interstate 95 and is a source of entertainment, excitement, and fun for all ages.

The National Park Service operates several Civil War battlefield parks in the area, including the"Stonewall" Jackson Shrine in Caroline County. The Fredericksburg area is home to a significantconcentration of Colonial and Civil War attractions with scores of restored 18th and 19th centurybuildings which are today home to businesses and residences and offer an inviting environment forthe more than half-million tourists annually.
