01/DECEMBER/2014 10COVERSTORY

With internet networks becoming more accessible and widespread reach of personal mobile computing

devices coupled with availability of public cloud services for work, the professional work arena is witnessing a marked shift towards BYOD (Bring your own devices). Internationally, there is a changing attitude to own-device use in the workplace is lev-eling out between users, while corporate approaches to management and security are out-of-step. There has been a strong upward trend towards adopting BYOD as the employees and organizations feel that BYOD empowers them in the workplace. With BYOD becoming a growing reality of modern life, it makes sense to manage it well. This changing scenario also poses a need for the organizations to rework the infra-

structure to adapt to the growing trend of BYOD. The three main concerns for BYOD in an organization are data secu-rity, return on investment, and business justification. The growing penetration of Wifi smart-phones and tablets has given an opportu-nity for the technology users to integrate the technology with company’s network to increase their professional output and being connected with the job while on the move. This provides the employee to work on a tablet on the latest presentation and then integrate it to the office network for the formal business presentation. This kind of work on the move goes a long way in helping the employee to work smoothly while in time constrained work situations. This also reduces the need for carrying heavy gadgets while working away from the office space.

While the advantages that BYOD offers is huge, this BYOD trend which is gaining popularity in the Indian professional scene is also raising the need for the organiza-tions to work out adequate network security to keep up with the changing times. The organizations will also have to develop their own BYOD policies with guidelines to the employees to use the technology efficiently and carefully. There is no doubt that the BYOD offers a distinct advantage to the employee and the enterprises as the employee gets to complete the work at home and save valu-able time but there is also a need to use it with necessary caution. Globally, just 19% of companies have policies in place that prevent own-device use in the workplace. Today most of the employees are trying to use their own personal computing devices at work for both personal and professional

Page 11: Infofriend english december 2014

01/DECEMBER/2014 11

Page 12: Infofriend english december 2014

01/DECEMBER/2014 12COVERSTORYCOVERSTORYpurposes. This scenario marks the growing need for a change in how the enterprises need to rethink their strategy towards developing strong BYOD policies in every corporate office. The employees no longer hesitate in using the personal devices in the work atmosphere and this highlights the degree to which user attitudes and corporate attitudes are misaligned. The ideal scenario would be one, where BYOD is accommodated and well managed, and where users do not feel a need to act in a way that is contrary to the company’s wishes or security. This change in attitude towards BYOD will help both users and business enter-prises to function in harmony, and will be a benefit for both. It is high time that organizations develop a more mature approach towards BYOD. The Indian companies have realized this need for change. According to Fortinet survey, In-dia leads the way with 76% of users stating that their employers had BYOD policies in place. However, India also has a higher-than-average number (34%) for which the policy prohibits own-device use. But while not perfect, at least the Indian market has recognised the scale and potential impact of BYOD and has been conscientious in its approach. This contrasts dramatically with South Korea where 61% of organisations do not have a BYOD policy and where just 10% prohibit BYOD use. The country’s own government has in the past highlight-ed the problem it has with cyber crime, but with such a lax approach to BYOD use, it is hardly surprising that the problem exists.Perhaps unsurprisingly, banking and fi-nance, IT and telecom and manufacturing are the sectors that lead the way with re-gards to having a mature and conscientious approach to BYOD. These are the only sectors where having a policy allowing the use of personal devices is more common-place than having no policy at all or having a strict prevention policy. But considering the extremely sensitive nature of the data these industries deal in, it is to be expected that they would have a more mature ap-proach to BYOD. By contrast, agriculture/fisheries/forestry and media/publishing/broadcasting have the most lax approach, with no policy in place being common. The emerging challenge facing the world of enterprise is not just to their approach to bringing BYOD up to speed, so it more closely matches the attitudes of users, but also of thinking about the future evolution

of BYOD and new connected devices and user habits. With the wearable technology entering the market, With 50% of users surveyed agreeing that new devices such as Google Glass, smart-watches and even connected cars will find a place in the work environment, the threats to the corporate network will only become more complex. The BYOD headache will not go away soon.BYOD is a trend that is growing in or-ganisations and cannot be stopped, and subsequent potentially devastating waves created by new devices will follow. Increas-ingly, BYOD needs to be approached from a network perspective if the organisation is to effectively and safely integrate it into the daily work processes. This can be achieved by implementing policies, authentication and control at the user level.By accepting the inevitability of BYOD and recognising its evolving nature, and by putting policies in place to manage it, this policy can be a far less problematic factor of the modern working environment. There is no doubt that there is no going back from this changing trend as the de-mand for BYOD is bound to go up. As the companies come to a mature understand-ing of the need for BYOD solutions and network, the BYOD adoption will become more common. The key mobile comput-

ing devices that have come in the focus are smartphones and tablets but this at present extends as well to laptops and notebooks. This increased affinity and adoption of BYOD trend in India also puts these en-terprises vulnerable to BYOD risks. There are intensified APT attacks on enterprises through malicious mobile apps, highlight-ing a major contention that Indian security practitioners have against BYOD. As the number of uncontrolled or uncontrollable endpoints within an organization explodes, this could make them a prime point of en-try for APT attacks. There should be an in-creased adoption of Network Access Con-trol (NAC) to mitigate BYOD risk as today, many enterprises do not have the ability to either detect or keep unwanted devices off their networks. The NAC would also regulate their levels of access, whether full or restricted, depending on the security state of the end device attempting the net-work connection. For this, the NAC would take inputs from the MDM solutions for information on the security status and con-figuration of the mobile devices. Integrated NAC and MDM solutions will become more common. Organizations should start investing more in corporate mobile apps for employees. There will be more data warehousing and branch management ap-plications around. There is an unfounded misconception that BYOD adoption allows the employees to use their personal devices in the corporate network. If the employee has a smart de-vice and want to connect to the IT infra-structure, the employee will have to follow the rules. BYOD needs to be device ag-nostic and the onus is on the organization to secure devices entering its perimeter, which could be a bit of a struggle. While enterprise mobility is well accepted and actively incorporated, it would seem that BYOD remains a contentious topic and will still take some time for active adoption in all arenas. When employees use technol-ogy that the company doesn't control to access critical corporate data, the risk of ex-posing or losing that data skyrockets. In the long run, there is no doubt that even with all the inevitable risks that BYOD exposes the corporate network to, the BYOD adop-tion still has a distinct advantage. So the inevitable adoption of BYOD needs to be done with secure BYOD policies in every organization for the company progress.

There is an unfounded misconception that BYOD adoption allows the employees to use their personal devices in the corpo-rate network. If the employee has a smart device and want to connect to the IT infrastructure, the employee will have to follow the rules. BYOD needs to be device agnostic and the onus is on the organization to secure devices entering its perimeter, which could be a bit of a struggle.
