We at Green’s have been in business since April 2004- so we are now in our 15th trading year!

From humble beginnings in the little “bothy” opposite Northallerton mart we now have a truly impressive

site at Thirsk Farmers Auction Mart run by a great team of local people. We are building a new extension

to the front of the Country Store and we have just opened a new garden plant centre. Our dedicated farm

store also houses the Laser Tag business. This has really taken off and we are producing thousands of

cattle and sheep tags weekly at the Thirsk branch. Replacement cattle tags are available within minutes

and priced at £2-50 and sheep tags available same day and priced from 59 pence. Come and see us soon!

Oh – and we now stock Brymor Ice Cream too!

Down on Spring View Farm……. A lot has been going on at the farm over the past few weeks. The fields eventually dried out, but we now have areas which resemble the Kalahari Desert! Where the water has been stood we have huge bare patches of land and now it’s so dry there is little or no grass coming through. Anyway at least we have stopped having to buy silage and straw. This has been a massive cost to all livestock farmers over the extended winter and looks like prices could remain high going into next winter.

Anyway, great to get the Oxford Sandy and Blacks outside for the summer. They are so much easier to look after outside. I’m having to make wallows daily at the moment as it’s so dry! I had some poor litters over the winter and have changed the boar to a pure OSB so looking forward to rearing pure pedigree stock this year.

The Whitebred Shorthorns are all looking well and getting their summer coats. We have had 3 calve so far and 2 are precious heifers! We have another 2 to calve and also have a grand calf from our Hereford heifer and a funny little calf out of one of the Highlanders. We have kept a bull from last year and he is with the cows to hopefully tighten up the calving period, as last year we used AI and had a few repeats. We used Tracesure CUI boluses on the whitebreds and it has made a difference. The calves are livelier and up sucking quicker. We will use them again.

The sheep have been clipped and cliked and looking really well. We have some super lambs from the pure Kerry Hill ewes. We bought a few pet lambs and weaned them at 5 weeks as they were “blowing up” with too much milk. Since then we have fed them I’Ansons lamb 18 and lamb complete and they are growing well. We did lose two though. We have got the shed mucked out and will spend some of the summer devising a water system that gives us at least one working tap for winter if it freezes up. That “beast from the east” really caught us out and we were carrying water for days. Hard to believe now with the current lovely weather!

Sheep are under constant strain from external parasites and, at this time of year, blowfly strike becomes an issue. Choosing the best fly control product for your sheep can be a mine-field so to make it easier for you, we have set out this table below which includes the products that are available and their main benefits. For full efficacy; all products should be used through the correct applicator and in accordance to manufacturer’s instructions. It’s also important to apply insecticides early in the season to help reduce fly numbers but also to avoid any early strike as some products won’t kill maggots!

EARLY FLY CONTROL IS PARAMOUNT THIS YEAR….

Early insecticide treatment of cattle can help reduce insect populations. Applying a proven insecticide early in the season will both reduce the first wave of attack from biting insects and cut next generation numbers. Seeing flies or midges on or around animals are usually the main triggers for applying insecticides, but significant insect populations can have built up by then.

Regular applications of Butox SWISH onto cattle will reduce the insect threat. And an early first dose will also help control any biting and sucking lice that have built up on animals over the winter housed period. You also get 8-10 weeks fly and lice protection from a single insecticide application. Also available for cattle is Downland Flydown…..
