Industry Academia Workshop: Recent Trends in Drilling Technology

The Industry Academia Workshop on Recent Trends in Drilling Technology held in the KDMIPE Academy, ONGC, Dehradun from 25th August 2014 to 29th August 2014 witnessed the inclusion of several senior dignitaries in the likes of Mr. K.L. Mehrotra, (ED HOI ONGC ACADEMY) and Mr. K. Krishna Pratap, (ED HOI IDT) and was based on the theme that the Oil Industry needs young minds to contribute in terms of Research and Innovations. The workshop kicked off with the inaugural session which included the lamp lighting ceremony and the address by the esteemed hosts of the workshop. The importance of Oilfield Research and Development was brought to light and focused upon. In this event 2 Faculty and 8 Students were participated.

The workshop was a detailed description of the most vital process of setting up of oil well – Drilling Technology. The basics of the drilling process were explained and an insight about each process was focused upon. Sessions such as the Oil Well Offshore Drilling Technology and Oil Well Onshore Drilling Technology gave the audience an insight on the type of rigs, their selection criteria and also the different processes and difference of processes in the Offshore and Onshore Drilling Technology. Emphasis was laid upon two main Offshore Rigs – Jack-up Rig and Floaters. The type of equipments and rigs which are used in the industry were told.

Various vitals of the drilling technology such as the Casing Design, Cementation, Well Design and Planning, Drilling Fluid Technology and Well Control were taught by the help of important sessions held by the esteemed faculty and training personnel of ONGC. Various processes were explained by the help of presentations and videos and the basics of every process were told to the audience. Topics of immense importance such as the Formation Damage, Prevention and Control were also taken up to discuss the complications in the present day drilling industry and the industry efforts for their mitigation and prevention. The lectures also helped to clear several doubts the audience had in terms of understanding of the concept.

The Academia Workshop was designed in a way that after getting us acquainted with the basics of Drilling Technology, the sessions moved onto to the topic of Advancements in various sectors. Enlightening sessions such as the Advancements in Drilling, Advancements in Drilling Fluids, Advancements in Well Control and Advancements in Cementing Technology focused and brought light upon the audience in the various R & D Projects of ONGC. Success stories and ongoing projects were shared to give the audience the essence of the present day innovations in the oilfield. Various state of the art technologies such as Managed Pressure Drilling, Use of Non Invasive Drilling Fluids, Microbubble System were also discussed.

One of the most interesting parts of the workshop was the visit to the Rig Installation in the Institute of Drilling Technology, Dehradun. The participants of the workshop were given a visual experience of one of the previously used rigs on ONGC, and the equipments explained and the doubts answered in detail. The session also included the demonstration of an artificial blowout highlighting the participants the need of proper Safety, Technology, Knowledge and set of Skills that are required in drilling a safe and usable Oil well. Last but not the least; the workshop included a session on the Oil Field Safety Practices and the need to adhere to the QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) policy which is adopted on the oilfield. The Oil industry is a risky business in terms of Safety and Money. Thus, Skilled Personnel are required for carrying out the operations and hence the rapidly rising need for man power, skill and R&D.

The Industry Academia Workshop was of immense importance to the participants because it not only taught the basics of the processes but also the emerging trends and technologies in the Oilfield. It gave us an opportunity to talk to the esteemed faculty and research personnel of ONGC and discuss the concepts, practices and their work in detail. The workshop was not just an enlightening experience but also the correct amalgamation of the Oil Industry and the Academia.
