From Cyber-Physical Systems to Industrie 4.0

In 2011 acatech published a position paper on „Cyber-Physical Systems as driving force

for innovation in mobility, health, energy and production“.

Subsequently, the term Industrie 4.0 was invented by Henning Kagermann, president of

acatech, Wolfgang Wahlster, CEO of the DFKI and Wolf-Dieter Lukas, Federal Ministry

of Research and Education, to describe the impact of digitisation (Internet of

Things) on production systems (Smart Factory).

Germany‘s Digital Journey

Stay Competitive in a Data-Driven Platform Economy

Paradigm shift II: Smart Service Welt

> The users at the center: in their respective roles

> Everything as a service: Personalised, on demand, using smart data

Rethink business models and ecosystems

Paradigm shift I: Industrie 4.0

> From central control to decentralised self-organisation

> Smart, connected, autonomous

Rethink production processes, value chains and workplaces

Digital Platforms: Self-Reinforcing Growth Engines

Multi-sided, mostly cloud-based frameworks

Network effects:

– With more users, the platform becomes more attractive to potential new users

(e.g. Facebook)

– The more users on one side, the more attractive the platform becomes for users of

the other side (e.g. IPhone)

Scale globally quickly with only little investment

Foundations of dynamic digital ecosystems

– Complementary services, -products and -competencies

Platform owners have more power than traditional factory owners

Smart Services: Created in Dynamic Digital Ecosystems

Superior user experience

Augmented reality

Smart services, platform on platform

Data-fusion, secure data supply chains

Conversion into smart data

Gathering big data: more objects

more data more value

Best Practice: Ecosystem for Smart Condition

Monitoring Services by Gämmerler

Smart Service:

Avoid unexpected outages

Monetization: Pay-per-use

Growth potential Gämmerler:

Build ecosystem for complementary smart

services

Growth potential Siemens:

– Offer services to

Gämmerler

– Attract more manufactureres

Autonomous Systems

Execute high-level tasks without detailed programming

and without human control

Improve themselves through experience and learning.

Act on their own or assist humans in difficult tasks.

Challenges: Human-machine interaction and ‘robot ethics’

Autonomous production systems:

Hybrid teams: Robots become partners at the workplace

Driverless transport systems

Adaptive factory (short-term autonomous rebuilding)

New requirements for development, certification and operation

Conclusion

Strengthen dual strategies

– Agile, pragmatic cooperation with a focus on testbeds and use-cases

– Mobilize and empower SMEs: innovation platforms, onboarding factories

Expand international cooperation

– Explore the potential alignment of RAMI 4.0 and IIRA

– International rules for data economy and platform governance

(access to the platform, dividing value and resolving conflicts)

– Antitrust law and regulations for running clouds

Ensure to deliver on the promise of ‘sustainable growth’

– Productivity, adaptability, resource efficiency, work-life balance and job quality
