TIMKEN® TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS Timken offers the most extensive line of tapered roller bearings in the world.Tapered bearings are uniquely designed to manage both thrust and radial loads on rotating shafts and in housings. We manufacture nearly 26,000 bearing combinations – in single, double and four-row configurations. Sizes range from an 8 mm (0.31496”) bore to a 2,222.5 mm (87.5”) outside diameter (OD). Customizedgeometries and engineered surfaces can be applied to these bearings to furtherenhance performance in demanding applications.

Single-Row BearingsSingle-row tapered roller bearingsconsist of four independent components:the cone (inner ring), the cup (outerring), the tapered rollers and the cage. The tapered angles allow the bearingsto handle a combination of radial andthrust loads.

Timken® single-row tapered bearings are commonly applied inwheels, transmissions, gear reductionunits and a wide array of rotatingindustrial equipment.

Single-row tapered roller bearingshave positive roller alignment thatensures true rolling motion andgenerates a “seating force” thatpushes the roller against the cone large rib. This seating force preventsthe rollers from skewing off apex, thereby keeping them positively alignedand located against the cone large rib.During assembly, tapered bearings canbe preset to required clearance (endplay) or preload conditions for optimumperformance.

TS bearings are the most widelyused design. TSF bearings are single-row tapered bearings that have flangedcups to facilitate axial location andaccurately align seats in through-boredhousings.

TSL bearings are similar to TSvarieties but feature DUO-FACE® PLUSseals pressed onto the outsidediameters of the cone ribs. TSUbearings are self-contained, unitizedassemblies that carry heavy radialloads and can manage thrust loads ineither direction.

Type TS Size range:7.937 mm – 1,701.8 mm bore(0.3125” – 67”)

Type TSF Size range:7.937 mm – 1,270 mm bore(0.3125” – 50”)

Type TSL Size range:19.505 mm – 68.262 mm bore(0.76791” – 2.6875”)

Sealed roll neck bearings havespecially designed sealing arrange-ments. This allows the bearings toendure harsh environments by helpingto eliminate contamination from thebearing envelope, thereby extendingbearing life. All Timken sealed roll neckbearings have spiral bore grooves withblended radii to eliminate roll neckdamage.

Types TQITS and TQITSE consist oftwo pairs of indirectly mountedbearings, two single and one doublecone, four single cups and three cupspacers. Type TQITSE has an extensionto the large bore cone adjacent to theroll body. This not only provides ahardened, concentric and smoothsurface for radial lip seals, but alsoimproves roll neck rigidity by eliminatinga fillet ring. This feature allows thecenterline of the bearing to move closerto the roll body, and it also permitsshorter and less costly rolls. Theindirect mounting of both the TQITS andthe TQITSE increases the overalleffective spread of the bearing todeliver optimum stability and roll rigidity.

Sealed Roll Neck Bearings Size range:190.5 mm – 711.2 mm bore(7.5” – 28”)

Precision Tapered Roller BearingsSize range:7.937 mm – 315 mm bore(0.3125” – 12.4016”)

Some applications require a level ofprecision that cannot be achieved witha standard tapered roller bearing.Timken precision tapered rollerbearings promote and maintain theoperating accuracy required of today’smachine tool industry and variousrelated specialized markets. Precisionclass tapered roller bearings offermachine tool builders an economicaldesign solution that exceeds mostapplication needs for rotationalaccuracy and rigidity. Precision classesrange from Class 3 (C) to Class 000 (AA).

Spacer BearingAssembliesSpacer bearing assemblies speedbearing installation time by eliminatingthe need for bearing adjustment. Theycan be used with two-row and four-rowTimken tapered roller bearings to pre-set the bench lateral clearance (benchend play).

With the addition of spacers, machined to predetermined dimensionsand tolerances, many single-rowbearings (type TS) can be supplied as atwo-row, pre-set, ready-to-fit assembly. This principle is adopted in twostandard ranges of spacer assemblies:types 2S and SR. The concept also canbe applied to produce custom-madetwo-row bearings to suit specificapplications, for example, 2TS-TM and 2TS-DM.

Type 2SSize range:17.462 mm – 83.345 mm bore(0.6875” – 3.2813”)

Type 2TS-DMSize range:7.937 mm – 1,701.8 mm bore(0.3125“ – 67“)

Type SRSize range:50 mm – 200 mm bore (1.9685” – 7.874”)

Crossed Roller BearingsType TXRSize range: 203.2 mm – 1,879.6 mm bore(8” – 74”)

A crossed roller bearing is comprised of two sets of bearing races and rollersbrought together at right angles – withalternate rollers facing in oppositedirections – and within a section heightnot much greater than that of a singlebearing. The crossed roller design isideal for machine tool applications suchas vertical boring mills, vertical grindingmachines and other equipment.

TIMKEN® TORRINGTON® SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARINGSTimken® Torrington® spherical roller bearings feature all of the characteristics that have made Timken renowned – superior design, reliable performance andcomprehensive technical support. Our spherical bearings are designed to managehigh radial loads and perform consistently, even when misalignment, marginal lubrication, contamination, extreme speeds and critical application stresses are present.

Spherical Roller BearingsSize range: 25 mm – 1,500 mm bore(0.9843“ – 59.0551“)

Spherical roller bearings have matchingspherical surfaces on both rings androllers that enable the bearings tocompensate for modest misalignmentbetween a rotating shaft and thebearing housing. Spherical bearingshave high radial load capacity andaccommodate some combination ofradial and axial loads.

There are a number of sphericalbearing cage designs available that are offered in different styles forvarying combinations of loads andspeeds. For example, one designprovides an extra-close runningaccuracy for enhanced performance.Spherical roller bearings are used inapplications for power generation, pulpand paper mills, oilfield, mining andaggregate processing, wind turbines, gear drives and rolling mills.

Spherical Roller Bearing Special Features• Carburized components to lengthen

life in industrial machinery• Engineered surfaces to extend life• Special modification codes for

specific applications

Timken Torrington spherical bearingscan be ordered with several enhance-ments to extend life and improveperformance in specific applications.Carburized components offer highercompression stresses and resist shockloading. Large bearings often operatebelow the bearing's critical speed, causing the cage to push a non-rotatingroller across the raceways. This slidingaction breaks down lubrication film andcan ultimately damage the bearing.

Timken engineered surfaces protectbearing components from skidding

and sliding while withstanding small-particle contamination. In some cases, engineered surfaces can extendbearing life by up to five times standarddesigns. Bearings with engineeredsurfaces enhance life in paper androlling mills and other demandingapplications.

Special modification codes havebeen created for specific applicationsincluding W800 for vibrating mech-anisms and W906A for large papermachinery.

THRUST BEARINGSTimken® thrust bearings are designed specifically to manage thrust loads and provide high-shock-load resistance in industrial applications. These bearings provide high-speed performance and application flexibility. We manufacture thrustbearings in tapered, spherical, cylindrical, ball and needle configurations.

Timken® TaperedThrust BearingsThe TTHD bearing is designed for highthrust loads and heavy shock condi-tions. The bearing features an identicalpair of hardened and ground steelwashers with tapered raceways. Thetapered rollers are equally spaced by acage. TTHD bearings are used in slowto moderately high-speed applications, including oil well swivels, crane hooks, extruders and piercing mill thrustblocks.

Similar to the TTHD design, TTHDFL/TTVF and TTVS bearings combine thefeatures of tapered thrust and cylindri-cal roller bearings to offer the highestpossible capacity of any thrust bearingof its size. Both bearings employ a V-Flat design with the TTVS, providingself-aligning characteristics. In the V-Flat design, one washer is flat, whilethe second has a tapered racewaymatching the rollers. MostTTHDFL/TTVF and TTVS V-Flat bearingsizes utilize cages with hardened pinsthrough the center of the rollers. Thisallows for closer spacing of the rollersto maximize capacity.

The TTHDSV/TTSV andTTHDSX/TTSX tapered thrust bearingsare both full-roller complement designswithout conventional bores. They areprovided with a center insert forattachment purposes as well as for lifting. They offer the highest capacity, but at a somewhat reduced speedType TTHDFL/TTVF

While based on standard configurations, aerospace bearings are designed to meet the unique requirements of the industry. Most bearings used in aerospaceapplications are made from vacuum-melt 52100 or VIM-VAR M-50 and are normallymanufactured to ABEC/RBEC 5 tolerances with high-strength machined cages.Other special materials are available for performance enhancement. Standard configurations are available in sizes from 10mm bore to 300 mm OD with specialdesigns up to 600 mm OD.

Ball Bearings for Aerospace Applications

Various ball bearing configurations areavailable for aerospace applicationsand are specially designed to handleradial, thrust, moment, reversible thrustor combination loads as required.Bearings may be supplied as singleunits or in preloaded sets.

There are two basic Conradconstructions. The HK series isdesigned to handle radial, thrust, moment, reversible thrust orcombination loads. It also has high-strength Conrad separator options thatcan manage severe loads and speeds. The HD series, with its innovativefractured outer ring design, allows formaximum ball complement in a radialdeep-groove bearing. This providessignificant improvements in dynamicload capacity and predicted service life.

Two angular contact configurationsare available. The HA series is a non-separable design with counter-boredouter rings and one-piece, high-strength separators. It is used inpreloaded and/or thrust-typeapplications. Options include deep-groove outer and relieved inner racesfor ultra-high-speed applications. Thehigh-performance HT series, with fulldeep-groove outer rings, one-piece,high-strength separators and two extra-deep-groove inner ring halves, istypically used on high-speed shaftswith reversing thrust loads.

Cylindrical Roller Bearings for Aerospace ApplicationsAll cylindrical roller bearingconfigurations, except RAA, provideprecision control of the rollers foroperation over a wide range of speedswith precision-ground, double-ribbedguide flanges on one ring. These rollerbearings are found in turbine enginemainshaft, transmission and gearboxapplications with high radial loads.

RF and RJ configurations work well with applications requiring axialposition control or limited thrustcapabilities in one direction. Underhigher loads and at higher speeds, theRJ configuration is easier to lubricatewith an oil jet onto the inner race. RUand RN are full-floating configurationsthat allow limited axial motion duringoperation. RN is less prone to slip orskid under lighter loads or varying loads

at high speeds. RU is easier to lubricateunder heavier loads.

RUS and RNH bearings are used inintegral designs where the rollers rundirectly on a hardened and ground shaftor housing. Performance characteristicsare similar to RU and RN. The RAAconfiguration has single-ribbed inner and outer rings and performs under lowspeeds or oscillating conditions. It hashigh guide flanges to accept some thrustin one direction.

Timken cylindrical roller bearingsachieve superior performance throughexceptional control of roller geometry.Rollers in all sizes over 3.5 mm arecontoured by crown blending foruniform stress distribution under load. The length is closely matched foruniform minimum clearance within the guide flanges to ensure optimumtracking at all speeds. These “square”rollers have superior ability to acceptthrust and misalignment. Rollers ofdiameter-to-length ratio less than onecan be supplied where it is critical tomaximize capacity and accommodateload conditions and OD restrictions.

Tapered Roller Bearings for Aerospace Applications

Timken tapered roller bearings are used in landing wheels on commercialairliners worldwide because Timken isthe brand of choice. Tapered rollerbearings can withstand highaccelerations and decelerations, heavyloads and a variety of temperature andenvironmental conditions.

Timken aircraft landing wheelbearings have been designated “2-629” (imperial) or “N-629” (metric),signifying that they are designed andmanufactured for the application,

achieving superior performancethrough tightened tolerances. Thetypical design is the single-row TS typethat can be set to a required clearanceor preload to optimize performance.

Tapered roller bearings also areused extensively in helicoptertransmissions and rotor supportsystems, where heavy combinedradial/axial/moment load requirementsare found. In addition to standardsingle-row configurations, double-row dissimilar series designs withasymmetric thrust capacity may besupplied with or without mountingflanges for unique applications.

To help extend bearing life in landingwheels and helicopter transmissions,Timken can apply engineered surfaces, including topographical enhancementsand coatings, that help prevent scuffingdamage and other surface-to-surfaceissues.

Needle Roller Bearings for Aerospace Applications

Timken offers a broad selection ofneedle bearing designs, from drawncup and machined-race bearings totrack rollers, thrust bearings andcombined axial/radial bearings. Theseare generally used for high-loadapplications requiring low to moderatespeeds. Timken® aircraft products are

designed for specific applicationsrequiring high load capacity withinminimum space requirements.

Assemblies incorporating rollers orcam followers are manufactured inaccordance with the requirements ofthe application, particularly in the caseof flight controls. Special design optionsinclude a wide range of geometries, clearances, seals, lubricants andperformance features. Self-aligning unitsand high-temperature capabilities areavailable. Special steels – with surfacetreatments such as coating and platingwith copper, chromium, silver and evengold – are used for specific operatingconditions.

Timken products have a reputationfor reliable performance in airframeand landing systems, as well asmechanical accessories such asengine nozzle controls, helicopter rotor blade supports and various servo controls.

Spherical Roller Bearings for Aerospace Applications

Timken self-aligning spherical rollerbearings combine excellent radial loadcapacity and moderate thrust loadcapacity. They are the preferred choicewhen conditions include heavy loads and

difficulties with housing alignment orshaft deflection. These loading conditionsare compensated for by the internal self-alignment of the bearing elements duringoperation. Optimal bearing capacity canoften be realized with up to +_ 1.5 degreesof misalignment.

For most aerospace applications, thebearings are made with integral gearson the outer ring for use in planetarygear sets of speed reduction systems.Typical uses are in main reduction geartransmissions for helicopter main rotordrives and turboprop gas turbineaircraft engines.

Both single- and double-rowconfigurations are available. Designmodifications include: machined-steel,high-strength cages with low-frictioncoatings; corrosion-resistant plating orcoating and high-temperature alloysand proprietary gear teeth coatings for increased service life under highload conditions.
