EMSL Analytical Inc. EMSL Analytical Inc. provides Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Services for air samples employing an extensive list of NIOSH, OSHA, and EPA test methods. Our IH Lab services are provided at our Corporate Lab in New Jersey, as well as at our Indianapolis, Indiana and Garden Grove, California Lab (LA Testing). The IH Lab Division includes qualified and experienced professionals, including Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH’s). These professionals welcome any/all client interaction with the lab before, during, as well as after the sampling event. This includes support with sampling strategies (CIH’s on Staff at our NJ Location) so that we may assist in ensuring that the lab data we provide achieves the goal that the customer intends on achieving with the sampling. We also typically provide sampling equipment and the media for the sampling event at no additional charge, as long as the analysis is performed by EMSL Analytical, Inc. The IH Labs maintain AIHA accreditation for Industrial Hygiene which includes on-site lab audits, formal document review program, and Proficiency Testing Program as part of the Accreditation process.

As required, the Labs maintain any applicable state certifications for fields of testing for air samples. Air samples are ana-lyzed for most analytes using GC-ECD, GC-FID, GC-NPD, HPLC, LC/MS, GC-MS, ICP-OES, ICP-AES, ICP-MS and/or IC. The analysis and reporting of individual samples is part of an overall process that includes analysis of Quality Control samples and programs. This process includes Instrument QC controls, calibration standard checks, spiked media, and reporting limit controls to ensure the confidence limits of the data are within the acceptable range as specified by the method requirements and our Quality Control Program.

Our IH Labs maintain normal business day operational hours with weekend scheduling availability as need-ed for critical response situations. Samples are received during regular business hours and Turn-Around-Times are tracked on business days. Lab TATs are offered for same day or next day, as well as for 2 day, 3 day, 4 day, 1 week, and 2 week Standard TATs. Costs/rates are based on the TAT requested with our 2 week TAT rates being the most economically cost effective for our customers.

Sample control/processing (log-in, results data-entry, reporting) is facilitated by our comput-er Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which tracks the sample job (batch) and provides the lab with a work log (due dates) to help ensure all the work is organized and processed in accordance with the client’s needs. Additionally, the LIMS includes security controls to ensure that information is controlled (locked) once the data has been documented and entered by the bench chemists. Reports are delivered at the choice of the customer which would include email, hard-copy regular mail, or both. Additionally, EMSL can provide Elec-tronic Data Deliverables (EDD), as well as various QC Data Packages if required.

Generic Sampling Instructions

Obtain the correct pump, operating instructions, media holder, inlet device (where used) flow-measuring device, and media for your application.

Look up the analytes in the sampling guide. Note the Flow rate and volume ranges for each compound of interest.

Select the rate and volume that meet your needs, e.g. lower rates = longer sampling time to a given volume. Flow rate (lpm) x Time (min) = Volume (L).

Compounds with the same compatibility code can be analyzed together, though the flow rates and volumes must be compatible also.

Open and insert media into the appropriate holder or sampling device. Sorbent tube arrow points to pump, cassette goes inlet end down in the cassette holder.

Start pump and connect flow-measuring device. Adjust the flow rate as desired, write it down, remove the flow-measuring device, and place the pump in the sampling area.

Check the flow periodically, and check for signs of overloading. At the conclusion of the sampling period, reconnect the flow-measuring device, and write down the flow.

Turn off pump, remove media from holder, and close (cap it). Complete the Chain of Custody and ship to EMSL following sample handling instructions from the method.

EMSL Analytical Inc. provides expert sampling instruction and training through our comprehensive workshop schedule. EMSL's Training Center is conveniently located at the corporate headquarters in Cinnaminson, NJ. Below are some gen-eral guidelines to follow. We highly recommend you seek professional advice if you are ever unsure of the best method to

gather your sample. Visit www.emsl.com for more information regarding sampling and workshop schedule.

More detailed sampling information is available at www.emsl.tv, and in the individual sampling and analytical methods.
