SUGGESTIONSWeather AdaptivityI stick a rain visor on when it’s raining because water would get in my eyes

I wear a hat under my helmet in winter because it’s cold & I would have to readjust straps

CostOne of my best friends is cheap...immune to anything new, he wears a mushroom helmet because he doesn’t care about fashion

HMD

STF

+ Collapsabillity is is an amazing feature+ I also really really like how it is collapsible+ Collapsibility is awesome+ I like the collapsible ribs, seems...more convenient+ The collapsable helmet idea is really cool+ Foldable helmet would be convenient+ Major selling device. If it caught on...see it becoming standard.- I wouldn’t trust a [collapsible] helmet at this time

+ Easily locked up with my bike without having to carry a helmet around.

+ I would advertise the mesh more...seems very comfortable+ Might improve airflow- ...A turn off...showercap or somesuch- Will it mess up hair?- Would it interfere with a warm hat underneath helmet?- Should be less visible, only bands across the top

+ It’s not in a distracting location, it’s well-integrated+ It’s new, maybe it should be adjustable+ HMD is also effective+ Integration with the HMD is sweet looking too...

lustworthy gadget+ Technology is new+ Really useful...major selling point...similar to car

rearview mirror- May not appeal to all riders- Take a lot getting used to- Unusual- You would only see sky when digging uphill- Would rain interfere with it?Would it be possible to have the HMD bars rotate upward or be moved out of the way?

+ STF [most effective]

+ ...sounds like a great idea

+ If it made the helmet lighter, it would make me more likely...

- If it made the helmet heavier, it would make me less likely...

- How sturdy are they, will they hold up?- Is velcro a good option for strapping in? In my

crash, my helmet shattered...you keep sliding for a good 20 feet... I would create a different locking mechanism

+ Like the eyeshield- I think the eye shield is excessive. Most...

wear sunglasses- Not a sell for me, I hate having things over

my eyes. It gets dirty & I have to clean it

+ I like how they all collapse+ A foldable helmet would be convenient+ Appealing to me, folding up into a sack would be immensely useful- Twisting helmet inside-out [least effective]- What is the purpose of the “Shock and Awe” folding inside out?- I wouldn’t trust a foldable helmet at this time- Will it wear out were it bends?

+ Sometimes there is too much ventilation [when it’s cold]

+ Earcovers should be stowable in/on helmet.

CONCEPT:PERFORMANCE

CONCEPT:CONVENIENCE

AESTHETIC RESPONSES

Lept out at me•

NOTABLE RESPONSESWould you wear it... Concept: Convenience?

It looks awesome, and by that I mean I would not feel like a goon wearing it. Wind visor makes a strong impression.

Yes...I like the HMD & styling

I would wear the convenience model, it looks awesome. Though, I think I might need to get a nicer bike first.

Concept: Performance? If I was a more intense cyclist

[No] Too goofy

Concept: Shock & Awe?Yes...I like the HMD & styling

Any of them?If you could prove to me the STF works

No, sorry, I still think my chance of wrecking is slim

Those look really really sweet. They all look appealing and “sporty” for a cyclist which is important to some people. If one of these is made, I actually want one.

Are these concepts relevent to the Target Market (Commuter cyclists & Road cyclists)?Definitely good for that market, I’m more of a leisure cyclist

Definitely. The gadget savvy cyclists would love these. I would think that Convenience & Shock & Awe models would be attractive to commuters while road cyclists would love the Performance model.

What would make them more relevent?Girlier designs

Keep them simple yet stylish

Least favorable impressions?Price...pretty expensive

Improvements? If I were looking for a collapsable bike helmet I might be interested in a model that doesn’t have the HMD’s sticking out the top, I’d rather have it as compact as possible after collapsing. I’d also be potentially interested in a helmet with just 1 HMD.

I’d be really curious about a foldable helmet concept as well - especially a stripped down version that I could wad up in a ball and toss in my bag

I want the helmet to feel like it’s not there as much as possible

Is there anyway to make helmets less bulky, something that looks like a hat, not a sauce pot

COMMON FEATURES [CONT’D]Shear-Thickening Fluids (STF)When suspended in a flexible material, STFs have no effect on flexibility until impact. At high relative velocity (impact), viscosity increases dramatically, stiffening, & resisting & spreading loads. After impact, STF returns to its previous flexible state. The shear-thickening material d3o (www.d3o.com/) is currently used in athletic padding & other applications. Military research is focussing on STFs in fabrics (including Kevlar & nylon) for body armor (www.ccm.udel.edu/STF/index.html).

Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMD)Information is simply and efficiently displayed on unintrusive projecting surfaces. The rearview image is transmitted through fiber-optic cable to the surface. A small screen emits cyclocomputer data that is projected on opposite surface. Coated polycarbonate surfaces are both clear & increase protection.

FittingThicker, softer straps prevent pinching & spread load.

ModularityHMD components are easily swapped out in case they or the helmet structure is damaged.

Cyclocomputer & display components can be upgraded.

VisibilityRetroreflective material is applied to strategic helmet areas to make the cyclist visible to others.

STRUCTURE

BICYCLE HELMET CONCEPTUALIZATIONPROBLEM STATEMENTBulk, inconvenience, appearance, & low perceived risk are primary stated reasons riders do not wear helmets. There is the implicit perception that helmets are a negative judgement on a rider’s ability to ride skillfully or avoid injury. Helmets also cause riders to feel isolated from their surroundings, making them less alert & their experience less relevant.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTSSafe & Protective

Low Weight

Comfortable & Fitting

Temperature Control

Stylish/Athletic Aesthetic

Keep Rider Presentable/Moisture Control

Solve Off-Bike Dilemma/Breathable

TARGET MARKETCommuter cyclists

Road cyclists

SOLUTIONThe helmet becomes an information-providing tool that will empower the cyclist, making them more competent & more aware of their surroundings. The helmet’s extensive protection can be secondary in the user’s mind. The use of Shear-Thickening Fluids enables significant advances in reducing bulk, decreasing inconvenience, improving appearance, & managing airflow.

COMMON FEATURESDesign elements shared by all 3 concepts

StructureTextiles, with Shear-Thickening Fluids (STF) suspended within, compose a “skin” that is stretched over “ribs” of foam or d3o. This principle is similar to WWI fighterplane construction. Head contact is made with a polyester mesh “cap” on which the ribs sit. This evens helmet weight distribution & promotes ventilation.

CONCEPT:CONVENIENCEI liked chinstrap thing on the back

I like the look of Convenience the most

The Convenience design looks the coolest

EFFE

ENES

S

CONCEPT:PERFORMANCEI would guess that anyone looking for more use than the Convenience model would prefer the full face coverage of the performance model

A longer tail might help with aerodynamics more than your streamlined channels

Does not have the flexibility of other concepts

I think the eye shield is excessive...most experienced riders where sunglasses

Eye protection is not a sell for me, I hate having things over my eyes...it gets dirty & I have to clean it

CONCEPT:SHOCK & AWEAlien...what is it?...ugly...mechanical

Lots of open spaces...concerned with it’s safety, seems a little risky

...Least effective

Good if STF catches on

What seems like holes in between the ribs...does not look very safe, especially for the forehead

I probably wouldn’t wear it

This definitely shocked me

...Just make sure the safety factor is there, because if people actually wear helmets then that’s what they’re concerned about

BICYCLE HELMET VALIDATIONSUMMARYOverall, the Convenience concept was prefered by evaluators. The velcro straps were not well received. Weather adaptability was also mentioned. Evaluators felt that visibility to others (riders, drivers, pedestrians) should be improved. Cost was also mentioned as a factor.

AUGMENTING AWARENESS

VOICEBLOG / SPC Reval Johnson / 2030.11.28 / I joined the Army in 2028……wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life……but it was a definite step. ¶ The grassroots overthrow of the Sejakh regime looked like a step toward democracy……but power corrupted the new rulers too……at least that’s what it looked like……I arrived with the hastily assembled international mission to establish a just, stable government……but the situation proved a bit more complicated……our mission was quickly switched to counter-insurgency.

PROBLEM:

CONVOYS ARE INEFFICIENT & VULNERABLE

Military engaged in counter geurilla-insurgency conflicts...

...while attempting to establish stable, just governance

While deployed to Iraq & Afghanistan, I took part in & observed operations first-hand

My third mission outside the wire was February 18, 2030, a Tuesday……woke up early, up late last night preparing……our trucks are big & complicated & vulnerable to attack because they can only use roads, & have to be armored, so they’re slow, & carry extra supplies in they case break down, which happens often. ¶ Fuel point line is long……glad we fueled up the night before……Biolene doesn’t smell too bad……still has to be convoyed in……people’d starve if we sourced feedstock locally……big engines are gas bingers. ¶ Delays getting out of the gate……traffic trying to go both ways, but the entrance is small for security reasons. ¶ Stuck in local traffic……people drive crazy……roads not made for large convoys……top-heavy trucks take corners slow. ¶ Have to project an alert & intimidating presence to discourage attack……also makes us look like occupiers. ¶ Never know if someone’s trying to blow us up……Rules for how to treat suspected threats are made by bureaucrats not soldiers……not sure whether to go by the book or do what works……but could launch you to Leavenworth. The previous convoy killed a local driver……he was just hurrying to work……but how do we know that?

USER

=In exchange for protection, convoys exact a high price in casualties, maintenance, time, an intrusive logistical

footprint, & new vulnerabilities.

In 2030, a paradigm-changing solution will be possible.

Trucks had a hard time getting up hills……had to stop & cool off……but that’s where the road goes……people watching us & talking on phones.Found possible IED……waiting 2 hours for remote Explosive Ordinance Disposal drone (rEOD)……no room to go around……sick to my stomach……hate these choke points. ¶ Don’t know who are allies, enemies, undecided, or people fighting for money……electronic surveillence says insurgents are talking about us……already know where we’re going……they’ll probably shake down the village elders before we arrive……tell them what to tell us.Sometimes have overwatch from attack helicopter drones……aren’t enough for full time cover……or enough to lift us to the village. On the other hand, some local contact is good……nation-building starts with relationship-building. ¶ Just started 2nd tea when needed to leave……wanted to be back by dark……despite claiming we own the night……a few simple tricks can defeat our sensors. ¶ We could almost see the base lights that night……daring to think we’ll get through unscathed……radar alarm screams……explosion behind lead vehicle……suddenly my truck was burning, feels like an oven……can’t see anything……door handle feels like a fire brand, doesn’t work……I was kicking at the door……just kicking the door……

Read this on a defense contractor website, interesting...In 2027, several disaffected engineers employed in the military-industrial complex made a decision. They were fed up with their company culture. They were doing the same things they’d always done, just bigger, more features, more expensive, & fewer; because not even the government could afford to buy very many of the company’s complex & costly fabrications. They questioned whether the items being made were actually effective, or just technology applied to obsolete doctrines of warfare. They formed their own company. They partnered with forward thinking low-level officers & enlisted personnel to develop gear that could change the paradigm of military operations. Through rapid-deployment programs they were able to sidestep the bureacratic barriers of the procurement system. In 2030, the first FoTMAGE systems entered service with select Special Forces units...

BROADER PERSPECTIVE

WHEYPOLDairy industry waste as source for sustainable

polymeric material production

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biologically synthesized and biodegradable polyesters that may substitute fossil oil-derived plastics. A new process for sustainable production of PHAs with controlled composition to be used as key components in the design and production of biodegradable plastic packaging items is proposed. Whey, a European wide surplus and waste material from dairy industry will be taken as cheap feed stock for the process. After assessment of raw materials and PHA producing bacterial strains, the biotechnological process will be optimized as well as polyester extraction, using nontoxic inexpensive solvents. Purified PHA will be chemically and physically characterized and, guided by the industrial converter partners and end-user needs, an integrated production process for novel biodegradable plastics dedicated to environmentally friendly packaging and containers, meeting the EC-directive 62/94, will be the ultimate project goal.

INDUSTRY PARTNERS:

ABSTRACT:In the food industry, the oxidation of fats, oils, and other food components produces off-flavours, offcolours and nutrient loss. Protection against oxygen is a vital requirement of food packaging. Common synthetic polyolefin films such as PE and PP are excellent mois-ture barriers, but must be coated or laminated with synthetic polymers including EVOH and PVDC copolymers to provide an oxygen barrier. The resulting polymeric structures, while effective in minimising the permeation of oxygen, water vapour, and odour, are characteri-sed by their poor reuse due to difficulties in separating each layer for its individual recy-cling. For this reason, scientists are continually investigating alternative packaging mate-rials such as the use of biopolymers. Despite all the advantages offered by biopolymer films, they present limitations in their application due to a series of physical properties and difficulties in formation.

Recent academic studies reveal that whey, the milk protein by-product of cheese produc-tion, acts as a good moisture-barrier film with acceptable mechanical integrity. In addition, the use of whey coating on plastic films can improve the recyclability and reuse of the plas-tic layer by removing the whey protein chemically or enzymatically. This present project will build on past research in order to arrive at a commercially feasible technique for developing whey coated plastic films, without compromising the oxygen or moisture barrier perfor-mance of conventional plastic films, while increasing their recyclability.

The impact of this project will be considerable and embraces many issues: finding a value-added commercial use of currently discarded whey protein, replacing harmful petroleum-based plastics with a natural by-product which would safeguard the performan-ce and enhance the recyclability of substrate film, meeting to growing consumer and politi-cal environmental concerns, thus adding huge value for EU packaging, food and dairy industries.
