L a k e F o r e s t, C ALake Forest is a c i ty in Orange County, Cal i fornia . Pr ior to incorporat ion, the community had been known as El Toro.Fol lowing a vote in 2000, Lake Forest expanded i ts c i ty l imits to inc lude the master-planned developments of Foothi l l Ranch and Portola Hi l ls . This expansion brought new homes and commercia l centers to the northeastern boundary of the c i ty.

Lake Forest has two lakes from which the c i ty gets i ts name. The lakes are man-made, and condominiums and custom homes ranging from large to smal l l ine their shores. Neighborhood associat ions manage the lakes (Lake 1, known as the Lake Forest Beach and Tennis Club, and Lake 2, the Sun and Sai l Club. ) Each faci l i ty features tennis courts , gyms, basketbal l courts , barbecue pits , vol leybal l courts , mult ip le swimming pools , saunas, hot tubs and c lub houses for socia l events .

The “forest” for which the c i ty is a lso named l ies in the area between Ridge Route, Jeronimo, Lake Forest and Serrano roads, and consists most ly of Eucalyptus trees. It is a lso man-made, and was created in the f i rst decade of the 1900s when a local landowner, Dwight Whit ing, p lanted 400 acres of Eucalyptus groves in the v ic in ity of Serrano Creek as part of a lumber operat ion intended to draw development to the area. In the late 1960s, the Occidental Petroleum company developed a res ident ia l community in and around the Eucalyptus groves, which had long s ince expanded and grown much more dense.
