Message by the Chancellor


Message from the Chairman, Board of Governors

The Convocation marks a major rite of passage for each graduating student. For many, it will be a transition from academia to the world of work; for others, it is a milestone in a continuing academic pursuit. It certifies, through a formal degree, the attainment of a certain level of knowledge and attainment. Yet, in today’s fast-changing world, it cannot mark the end of learning. In an era of rapid obsolescence, constant learning is a necessity and the courses at IIIT-D seek to inculcate the ability to learn – learning how to learn – amongst its students. Those of you entering the work-space (and, of course,

those continuing in the academic stream) would do well to keep in mind the need for such life-long learning.

All those leaving the Institute are our ambassadors, and it is their achievements which will sustain and develop the image of IIIT-D. I am sure that through their successes, values and behaviour, they will bring even greater sheen to the reputation of IIIT-D.

IIIT-D has now embarked on the next phase of expansion of our infrastructure. This will not only help us to expand, but will also provide space and facilities for new activities. More inter-disciplinary centres and an incubation facility are planned. The latter will cater to the needs of both students and faculty, furthering IIIT-D’s entrepreneurial agenda.

The faculty and staff, under the dynamic leadership of the Director, have already won wide recognition for IIIT-D, in the few years of our existence. It is now considered amongst the academic leaders in its field of activity. Our collaborations – both national and international – provide unique opportunities to both students and faculty.

In all this, my colleagues in the Board of Governors have played a significant role. Their guidance, advice and direction have been invaluable. I must also acknowledge the help and support of our Chancellor – Lt. Governor of Delhi – and the Government of NCT of Delhi.

I congratulate the graduating students – as also their parents and guardians – on this happy occasion, and wish them the very best. We look forward to welcoming them back from time to time as alumni, potential faculty and recruiters, but most of all, as friends of IIIT-D.

Ms. Aruna Jayanthi is a Member of Capgemini Group Executive Committee, CEO – Capgemini India and Chairperson of Sweden Country Board, Capgemini Sweden.

Prior to assuming the role of CEO in January 2011, Ms. Jayanthi was the Global Delivery Officer for Capgemini Outsourcing. She joined Capgemini in early 2000 and was part of the core team that initiated and setup Capgemini’s offshore capabilities.

Ms. Jayanthi has over 3 decades of experience in the IT services industry and has worked in both multinationals and pure-play companies. She has worked out of Europe and North America and continues to travel extensively meeting customers, analysts and Capgemini staff, getting a pulse of customer expectations and market direction.

Within a short period of being appointed as CEO, Ms. Jayanthi has quickly made her mark in the world of Indian business. She has been constantly featured in Fortune India’s and Business Today’s list of Most Powerful Women. She was also conferred with ‘The Woman of the Corporate World’ award at India Today’s Women Summit 2013. She is an Executive Council Member of the industry body - NASSCOM.

Ms. Jayanthi has done her Masters in Management Studies in Finance from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies.

Director’s Address

As is customary, let me start by giving a brief report for last year. Since its creation in 2008, IIIT-Delhi has come a long way in a short span of seven years.

With this year’s admissions, our student strength is over 1100 with about 800 B.Tech., 200 M.Tech. and 100 Ph.D. students. In this convocation including December graduation, we will be giving 4 Ph.D., 109 M.Tech., and 109 B.Tech. degrees.

Our faculty strength is about 40, all of whom hold Ph.D.s from prestigious institutions from across the world. We also have about 10 visiting faculty, who augment our regular faculty and also provide the much needed diversity of courses.

Research remains the key focus of the institute. Our faculty members and students have published over 175 papers in international journals and conference proceedings last year. Two of these papers have won the best paper awards in International Conferences, and four have received the Best Poster awards. Our team of seven faculty members and many students are one of the winners of the Mahindra Driverless Car Challenge. Another team won the Indo-US Grant Challenge for an affordable blood pressure monitor. One faculty member received the DST’s Inspire fellowship, taking the total number of faculty with this Fellowship to six.

About 20 faculty members are involved in collaborations with over 60 external collaborators from across the world. Of these about 10 are with industry, 15 with academics in India, and about 35 with overseas scientists.

This year about 12 research proposals from our faculty were approved for funding by various agencies for a total commitment of over Rs.4 crore. Seven of our Ph.D. students have been selected for the TCS Ph.D. Fellowship, taking the total number of these fellowships to more than 25 – probably the highest in the country. We also received 9 Ph.D. Fellowships under the Vishvesvarya Ph.D. scheme.

We continue with our plan to start research centres in focused areas. This summer, we started our second Research Centre in Computational Biology, which was inaugurated by the DBT Secretary, Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan. We have launched an M.Tech. program in Computational Biology and have also entered in an MOU with IGIB for collaboration for research and the M.Tech. program.

In our R&D efforts, we remain committed to developing technologies that can be transferred for commercial exploitation or use by other organizations. This year over two dozen new technologies and tools were developed which were transferred to various organisations. Five start-ups based on technologies and tools developed at IIIT-Delhi have emerged so far.


To further innovation and entrepreneurship, the Institute has also started an Incubation Centre that was formally inaugurated on April 6, 2015 by Mr. R. Chandrashekar, President of NASSCOM.

We earlier had received the UGC 12B accreditation – this year the Institute also got NAAC accreditation at the A level, the highest given.

Due to our rather quick growth, the current campus is already fully utilized with little scope to grow further. In fact, our student intake is now restricted due to space constraints, and we have slowed on our faculty recruitment for the same reason. For further growth, construction for the phase-II of the campus has already started – this will add another 64,000 sq meters of building space, approximately two times the current area, which will increase our capacity for faculty and students to three times the current capacity.

In our campus, we continue to focus on effective resource utilization and have installed smart electricity meters which show energy usage in a dashboard. Last year we installed solar panels of 40KW capacity, which generate about 4K units of power every month. While our cost savings are small, this helps us contribute to the environment, and also reduce our energy requirement from the grid, making it available for other uses.

With respect to placements, this year again we kept up with our previous years’ strong performance with placement in top companies like Microsoft, Xerox Research, Amazon, Adobe, EMC, etc. By

most measures for placement– highest domestic salary offered, percentage of students placed, mean and median offers – we are probably amongst the top few in our peer group.

Let me now read a few quotes from the graduating students. This year, we asked you to write your comments on a shared document. When I looked at them to select a few for this report, I was very impressed with the well thought out sentiments expressed, and had a tough time selecting a few. Here are a few from the graduating B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. students:

“Sometimes in life, it’s difficult to decide what you are meant for and what’s good for you. The best we can do is to put our heart into what we choose to do and forget the rest. For me, these four years, have made all the difference.”

“IIIT-D helped me follow my own path, my own journey. I couldn’t predict where my path would lead but the journey made me discover and rediscover myself, over and over again.”

“IIIT-D is work-fun-holic place to be. IIIT-D has shaped us from being Mugging-up-paper Engineers to Work-Industry-ready Engineers. IIIT-D changed us from Insomnia-for-Game to Insomnia-for-Work+Game and has let us manage time (somehow) for each & every work.”

“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be. IIITD is quite possibly the best thing that has happened to me.”

Thank you all for these wonderful comments. We are clearly well on our path of becoming a globally respected institute. To continue moving towards our vision, we need to further strengthen our research and innovation capabilities, which are hardest to develop and are in acute short supply in our country. We also need to continue improving the teaching and learning processes, introduce interdisciplinarity in education and projects, and strengthen our systems. I am sure with support from the Government, the Board, our faculty colleagues, the administrative staff, and the energy of the students, we will continue moving steadily towards achieving our vision.


Background about the Establishment of the Institute

The Beginning of IIIT DelhiIndraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (aka. IIIT-Delhi or IIITD) was created as a State University by an act of Delhi Government (The IIIT Delhi Act, 2007) empowering it to do research and development and grant degrees. IIIT Delhi was officially established on June 10, 2008 as per the notification in the Delhi Gazette. First class for B.Tech.(CSE) students was held on September 8, 2008.

The institute began with its first batch of 60 B.Tech. students in 2008. Since then, it has come a long way with over 40 faculty members specializing in diverse areas of Computer Science and Electronics and Communications and over 1000 students with about 726 B.Tech. students, more than 208 M.Tech. students, and about 96 Ph.D. students. In a relatively short time, it has earned good reputation in India and abroad for being a center of quality education and research in IT and allied areas.

Infrastructure

Permanent CampusFor the institute’s permanent campus, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi allocated land in the GB Pant Polytechnic Campus in Okhla Phase III near Govindpuri Metro Station in August 2008. The modern campus of the institute is spread over 23 acres of land over the rocky terrain. At present, the Campus with a covered area of 32,500 sq meters consists of the following facilities:

Phase II Construction The IIITD campus spread out over an undulating terrain of a triangular peripheral plot around the GB Pant Polytechnic buildings in Okhla Phase-III,


was planned to be constructed in three phases. The Phase-I having been completed with a built up area of 32,500 sq meters, the proposal for Phase-II construction of around 64,300 sq meters of built up area would cater to the requirements of 2,500 students and 125 faculty members. This proposal had received the Cabinet approval of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Reputed Architects M/s Sikka Associates were appointed for the purpose who have prepared the plans for the project. The Academic and Seminar block are planned to be GRIHA rated. The campus will continue to be a zero discharge campus with additional STPs, energy efficient systems as LED fixtures, solar power plant, BMS etc. The Phase II proposal comprises of the following blocks:

The foundation stone laying ceremony was held on May 5, 2015. The initial preparatory works have commenced and works are likely to be completed by the beginning of Academic session of 2017.

Life @ IIITD


At IIITD, students take part in a number of social and cultural activities through several student clubs. These clubs not only hone their leadership skills but also help instill team spirit in them.

Clubs already in existence at IIIT Delhi are Quiz Club - Trivialis, Design Club - Ink, Dance Club - MadToes, Literary Club, Music Club - AudioBytes, Photography Club - Tasveer, Eco Club and Adventure Club. These clubs enable students to come together, share knowledge and enhance their talent in areas beyond academics.

Throughout the year, the campus is abuzz with activities. ‘ESYA’ tech-fest is one of the biggest events on the campus which is

organized annually, while ‘Odyssey’ is the cultural fest of the institute. In addition to these, a Research Showcase (poster presentation) is organized every year. The Entrepreneurship Cell at IIIT Delhi nurtures all the budding entrepreneurs and supports them to take the next step. Students organize blood donation campaigns and an adventure trip during summer holidays.

Students are encouraged to help the society in some way or the other. Almost every student is involved with various NGOs all over the country. The institute also has its own home-grown NGO called ‘Find A Way’, which helps the children in need.


IIITD students also participated in several tournaments in Delhi and outside Delhi. They participated in the LSR invitational tournament from February 26-28, 2015 and achieved 2nd and 3rd position, respectively. Our students also took part in Twaran Sports Fest, Gwalior from January 23-26, 2015 & achieved positions in almost every sport activity.

Our basketball boys’ team came out as winner while we were runners up in tennis, girls’ volleyball and football, besides claiming four medals in athletics. In addition, IIITD participated in the Sports fest Utkarsha organized by NSIT Dwarka in March 2015. Our student also emerged as a winner in weightlifting at IIM Sports meet Ranbhoomi in February 2015.

The institute has been regularly organizing various sports events like football tournament Joga Bonito, Table Tennis and

Pool tournaments. Every year a group of students from IIIT Delhi takes part in Delhi Half Marathon running for a cause. We also organize summer camps for various sports activities at IIIT Delhi campus.

In order to engage maximum number of students in sports, the first IIIT-D intra mural was organized from 6-13 October-November 2014 in which around 250 students participated in different sports. A significant initiative from student’s side was the inter-IIITD football tournament known as ‘Joga Bonito’, which was organized by the sports coordinator with the participation of 30 teams.

There were many occasions when IIITD invited other college teams for friendly/practice matches, including those from G.B. Pant Engineering College, College of Vocational Studies, Kirorimal College, and at Jamia Millia Islamia etc.
