    objectivity, and honesty.

    Establishing and defining policies on conflicts ofinterest. Protecting the confidentiality of every authors work. Establishing a system for effective and rapid peer

    review. Making editorial decisions w ith reasonable

    speed and, when the manuscript is potentiallyappropriate for the journal, w ith input frompeer reviewers who have adequate expertiseto judge the manuscript, and communicatingthese decisions to authors in a constructiveand helpful manner.

    Establishing a process for reviewers to ensure thatthey treat the manuscript as a confidentialdocument and complete the review promptly.

    Informing reviewers that they are not allowed tomake any use of the work described in themanuscript or take advantage of the knowledge theygained by reviewing it until it is published.

    Providing reviewers w ith w ritten, explicitinstructions on the journals expectations for thescope, content, quality, and timeliness of theirreviews to promote thoughtful, fair, constructive,and informative critique of the submitted w ork.

    Requesting that reviewers identify any potentialconflicts of interest and asking that they recusethemselves if they cannot provide an unbiasedreview.

    Allowing reviewers appropriate time to complete their

    reviews. Requesting reviews at a frequency that does not

    overtax any one reviewer.

    Finding ways to recognize the contribution ofreviewers, for example by publicly thank ing

    them in the journal, providing letters thatmight be used in applications for academicpromotion, offering professional educationcredits, or inviting them to serve on theeditorial board of the journal.

    Evaluating all manuscripts considered forpublication to make certain that eachmanuscript provides the evidence readersneed to evaluate the authors conclusions and

    that authors conclusions reflect the evidenceprovided in the manuscript.

    may pursue further discourse. Identifying individual and group authorship clearly

    and developing processes to ensure that authorshipcriteria are met to the editors knowledge.

    Requiring all authors to review and acceptresponsibility for the content of the final draftof each paper or for those areas to which theyhave contributed; this may involve signaturesof all authors or of only the correspondingauthor on behalf of all authors.

    Maintaining the journals internal integrity(e.g., correcting errors; clearly identifying anddifferentiating types of content such as reports oforiginal data, opinion pieces such as editorials, lettersto the editor, corrections/errata, retractions,

    supplemental data, and promotional material oradvertising; identifying published material withproper references).

    Disclosing sources (e.g., authorship, journalownership, funding).

    Providing a mechanism for a further discussion onthe scientific merits of a paper, such as by publishingletters to the editor, inviting commentaries, orsoliciting other forms of public discourse.

    Explicitly stating journal policies regardingethics, embargo, submission and publicationfees, and accessibility of content (w hat isfreely available vs what is under a subscriptionmodel).
