What Is Coking Coal

• Coal is classified by end use

– Thermal coal – Heat source e.g. Power generation

– Coking coal (Metallurgical coal) – Iron and Steel manufacture

• There is a degree of substitution between specific thermal coals and lower ranked coking coals

Coking Coal Classification

• Let us examine the key coking specific parameters of – Rank – Reflectance – Crucible swelling number – Giesler plasticity (fluidity) – Coke Strength after reaction

Page 29: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

How to determine Rank

Indonesian coals do not fall into ASTM classification or other coal rank classifications. The coals are unique in that their rank is accelerated by magmatic, intrusive or volcanic activity. Although not completely understood the coals appear to have been accelerated in the carbonization process but associated de-hydration has not occurred at a similar rate.

(Robertson et al – Indonesian thermal coal handbook)

Rank and Coking coals

• As far as coking coal are concerned Vitrinite reflectance is well accepted as a measure of rank

• Coking coal typically has a Mean Maximum Reflectance of greater than 0.7

• Let us examine what vitrinite reflectance is

Page 31: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

What is Vitrinite?

• Coal is a sedimentary rock comprised mostly of organic detritus deposited in swampy conditions.

• Coal is not heterogeneous.

• The organic components in the coal that are identifiable under the microscope are called macerals.

• The maceral components can be divided into 3 main groups

– Liptinite (or exinite)

– Vitrinite

– Inertinite

• Each component is difficult to differentiate as there are no crystalline structure.

• Mineral matter was washed or blown into the peat marsh during the formation of coal

• The ratio of these components are important in determining the chemical properties of the coal

Page 32: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Vitrinite • Vitrinite is formed from wood, roots and bark that was gelified by humic

acid to produce the ground mass of the coal

• It is the predominant maceral for higher rank coals occurring as a uniform reflecting material or as a matrix enclosing particles of other macerals.

Page 33: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Inertinite

• Inertinite is formed from the same material producing vitrinite but the main difference is that there has been charring or oxidation prior to coalification

Page 34: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Liptinite

• Liptinite (Exinite) is produced form cellular material such as leaf cuticles, spores, resins and cellular structures.

E – Exinite (Liptinite) V – Vitrinite I - Inertinite

Page 35: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Vitrinite Reflectance

• The reflectance of vitrinite can be used to diagnose the rank of coal beds.

• %Ro is the percentage of light reflecting off vitrinite when magnified to 500X in oil immersion.

• The light used is a polarised LED light to illuminate the sample) and measure the maximum reflectance with monochromatic green (546nm) light

• Changes in reflectance are due to decreased porosity and increased molecular structure.

Page 36: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Crucible Swelling Number

Crucible Swelling Number (“CSN”); also known as Free Swelling Index): The degree of free swelling of a one gram sample of crushed coal heated under elevated conditions (> 800°C) in a specialised silica crucible. Higher index values (ranging from 1-9) equate to superior caking and/or swelling properties of the coal – required for coke making.

Crucible Swelling Number

• CSN is a quick and inexpensive method to determine if coal has any coking properties or if coal has oxidised through stockpiling.

Coke Strength after Reaction (CSR) and Coke Reactivity Index (CRI)

• Coke reactivity refers to the rate at which coke carbon reacts with oxidizing gases such as carbon dioxide, oxygen, air, or steam. The rate of reaction depends upon the character of the coke surfaces, the surface area exposed, and the chosen test conditions (gas composition, velocity, concentration, and temperature). The various reactivity tests are empirical in nature and are determined for prescribed conditions as to the amount and size of coke, geometry and dimensions of the reaction chamber, duration of reaction, and the gas composition, pressure, and temperature.

• The standard ASTM test method D 5341 for measuring CRI and CSR requires reacting 200 grams of 19 by 21 mm dry coke with carbon dioxide, adjusted to a flow rate of 5 litres per minute, for two hours at a temperature of 1100 degrees Centigrade. The CRI is reported as the percent weight loss of the coke sample after reaction.

Page 40: Indonesian Coking Coals - SMG C McCloskey Asia... · Coal Rank • Rank is the amount of coalification that any particular coal exhibits. • Coalification is the process of changing

Coke Strength after Reaction (CSR) and Coke Reactivity Index (CRI)

• The cooled, reacted coke is then tumbled in an I-drum for 600 revolutions at 20 rpm. The cumulative percent of plus 10 mm (3/8 inch) coke after tumbling is denoted as the CSR. Generally, cokes with high CRI values have low CSR's, and cokes with low CRI values have high CSR's.

• Coke properties that affect reactivity include: – texture (carbon forms) – structure (porosity, pore size, and pore wall thickness) – ash composition (alkalis, sulphur, iron, etc.)

Gieseler Plastometry

• 5 grams of pulverised coal sample is packed around a stirrer in a retort at approximately 900kg/m3. The test measures the resistance to an applied torque when heated from 300oC to 600oC at a rate of 3Co/min.

Gieseler Plastometer

• Fluidity is affected by oxidation and during stockpiling

• Typically, higher volatile coals are affected by fluidity decay more than for low volatile coals

• Fluidity decay can be reduced by tightly compacting the stockpile.
