Person Notes: When Helen Sutherland was born on August 25, 1900, in New York, New York, her father, George, was 32 and her mother, Jane, was 34. She had one older sister, Grace, and five younger siblings: Herbert, Willis (who died in infancy), Blanche, Agnes, and Nelson (who went on to fight in WWII). She grew up on the family farm at Cabin Hill, worked in Delaware County as a teacher until she saved up enough money to attend Muskingum College and get her B.A., and graduated in 1927. Afterward she continued teaching in Delaware County, and married farmer Lyman George Faulkner at the Cabin Hill Parsonage in 1929 when she was 28. They had one son together, George Richard Faulkner, the next year. Lyman was killed in a tragic tractor accident when his tractor rolled on a hill in 1946. Helen continued teaching in Margaretville until she remarried to retired farmer and lifelong bachelor John Elliott Tuttle on September 2, 1952, when she was 52 and he was 65. They moved to Schoharie where, among other hobbies and work in the community, she compiled a Sutherland family history. She and John had long lives together, and had been married for 27 years when he died in 1980. She died in December 1986 in Schoharie, New York, at the age of 86, and was buried in New Kingston, New York.
Notes:
Her lifetime saw the first flight (when she was very young), the Model T, the Titanic, the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, WWI, women's suffrage (when she was 19), the Great Depression, WWII, the Cold War, Korean War, and Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, and the moon landing.

Notes:
Person Notes: When Robert Scott was born on March 4, 1825, in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire, his father, William, was 29 and his mother, Jennatt, was 35. (There is some question about whether this is his correct birthdate/parentage, since there are at least two Robert Scotts in the same area of New York, making it difficult to sort out their records -- but we're going with it for now.) Assuming we have him placed with the right family, he grew up in Wigtownshire with at least five older siblings (William, Helen, John, Mary Jane, and Jennatt) and three younger (Samuel, Margaret, and James). The year after his father's death in 1847, his mother, entering her sixties, immigrated to the United States with Robert, his family, and several of her other children. Robert settled with his family in Delaware County, New York, and worked as a blacksmith. In about 1845, while still in Wigtownshire Scotland, Robert had married Ellen (last name unknown), when they were both about 19 or 20. They had six children, two born in Scotland and four in New York: Ellen, Robert, Mary, George, Margaret (who may have died young), and Eliza. Robert and Ellen both died sometime after 1880, the last census record we have of them.
His lifetime through 1880 saw the tail end of the Industrial Revolution, the abolition of slavery in the United Kingdom, the start of the Victorian Era, the Oregon Trail, the Disruption of 1843 when the Scottish Protestant church split in two, the Irish Famine, the Mexican-American War, the gold rush, the Crimean War, the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, the transcontinental railroad, the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Southern Reconstruction, and African-American suffrage.

Notes:
Person Notes: Joseph Beckwith was born on December 24, 1801, in New Bern, North Carolina. We know nothing of his parentage or early life; possibly records were disrupted in the Civil War. Sometime in his childhood or early adulthood he moved to New York state, and became a farmer in Ulster County and then in Delaware County. He married Anna Ostrander in 1826, when he was 25 and she was 26. They had at least three children during their marriage: John, Margaret, and Cornelius who went on to fight in the Civil War. They may also have had an older daughter, Maria. Joseph and Anna shared their house with Anna's brother, Henry, as they aged. Joseph died on February 2, 1865, in Andes, New York, at the age of 63, and was buried in the Fall Clove Cemetery.
His lifetime saw the Napoleonic Wars, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Lewis and Clark expedition (when he was very young), the continuing Industrial Revolution, the cotton industry in the Deep South, the Oregon Trail, the Mexican-American War, the gold rush, the Crimean War, the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the transcontinental railroad.
