The general problemKnowledge about wood properties and their impact on final products is

insufficient for achieving a significantly improved yield.

Some practical examples:• Production of low moisture content wood mostly gives a high percentage of

rejects due to warp

• During production of high strength wood beams the amount of beams that cannot be approved can be numerous

• To achieve boards having a sufficient amount of heart wood big amounts of boards normally have to be downgraded

Postulate & conclusion

Knowledge about wood properties and their impact on quality and the final end-use of wood products helps to choose the most suitable log for a specific product already in the forest. This contributes to significantly reduced amount of waste due to improper wood characteristics.

Automatic traceability systems making information available about individual objects at different stages along the forestry-wood supply chain are required.
