The conventions of an indie rock video• The video usually focuses on the artists passion to play music and not

success. It can contain the artist or a story with a theme/message.• Uses performance and narrative, unlike pop artists who sell their own

image. • Big focus on mise en scene; props for story, lighting enhances mood

and colours represent song/mood.• Editing- sometimes the effects used make the video seem like a mini-

movie and speed changes are used.• Camera- extreme close ups are used to show emotion and establishing

shots show off the band to the audience.

Hozier – Take Me To Church• This video uses black and white colours which are usually

associated with the genre’s dark theme and messages, in this case the video is about homophobia.

• The type of video is narrative and concept because it tells a story but also includes religious views. The artist is not involved in the video because it focuses on the story.

• The lyrics of the song are easy to understand and it fits with the events in the video e.g. ‘’ In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene, only then I am human’’.

Arctic Monkeys- ArabellaBlack and white effect and old Hollywood style makies the video seem old fashioned. The black and white is indie/vintage.The band is performing in the video which means it is a performance video, but also a bit of narrative with the story. Props- instruments are shown a lot and guitars to reinforce the indie rock genre. Other signifiers of the indie rock genre is women, motorbikes, and band performing.The song lyrics relate to the band performing, as they show a woman character during the description.

Similarities• Both videos use black and white effects and represent the indie
