The Indices of Multiple Deprivation

• The English Indices of Deprivation measures relative deprivation in small areas in England called Super Output Areas (SOA).

• Most of the data used for these statistics are from 2012 and 2013.

• Data from this presentation is available from: http://dclgapps.communities.gov.uk/imd/idmap.html

• The following maps show the ward of Telegraph Hill, split into 10 Super Output Areas.

• The tables identify the ranking of that SOA compared to a total of 32,844 SOAs in England.

• Those shaded orange are within the 20% most deprived. Those shaded red are within the 10% most deprived.

Summary of the data• The data highlights (as might be expected) the Kender area and Honor Oak area

as being within the 20% most deprived SOAs in England. Other parts of the ward score much higher.

• The IMD is broken down into different themes. • Overall the area scores relatively well on themes such as Education and Training,

and on Health and Disability. • However, some pockets score badly on the themes ‘Barriers to Housing’ and

‘Income Deprivation affecting Children’. • ‘Income Deprivation affecting older people’ shows particularly poor scores

across the majority of the ward.• Worryingly, the Income deprivation indicators are applied before housing costs

are applied. • Living Environment also scores badly across the ward, even in those areas which

score well on the other measures. • The table below defines what data is included in each of the themes.

Crime scores are generally poor (worst 20%) in the area around Queens Road, although the areas immediately around the whole area (New Cross, Brockley, Nunhead Cemetery) are generally worse, therefore this remains an issue for the area as a whole.

Across the ward as a whole, the scores on Living Environment are low, with 6/10 of the SOAs coming within the worst 20% and 2/10 within the worst 10%. This includes variables on air pollution, road accidents, housing quality and central heating. Unusually, Honor Oak actually scores highest here.

The income deprivation affecting children is cause for concern, as this measure doesn’t take into account the high housing costs, therefore combined with this, the impact on deprivation is considerably increased.

Frendsbury is effectively within the 1.5% most deprived on this score across England. And this does not include housing costs.
