Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

The Red Wolves men’s tennis team hopes to join
The Establishment during the program’s second
season.
Indiana University East men’s tennis coach Erskine
Ratchford says “establishing ourselves and methods
of winning” are the key themes to the Red Wolves’
second NAIA season, which opens March 2 with at
match at Saint Joseph’s College.
IU East managed a three-win season with an often-
shorthanded roster during the program’s inaugural
year in 2011.
The Red Wolves now how boast an 11-man roster and
matched the win total from 2011 during a short fall
season.
IU East hopes to establish something bigger and bet-
ter in 2012.
“As a young team, this season’s results will depend
on how quickly we develop as a team and as players,”
Ratchford said.
The rosterThree players established themselves during IU East’s
inaugural season. They are joined by an eight-player
recruiting class.
Redshirt sophomore Adam Derengowski (Richmond,
Ind./Richmond High School) and sophomore Justin Judd (West Milton, Ohio/Milton-Union High School)
gained valuable experience playing at the top of the
IU East lineup in 2011.
Derengowski tied for the team lead in singles wins in
the 2011 spring season. Judd tied for the team lead
in wins during the short 2011 fall season.
Redshirt sophomore Nick Frank got a full season of
college-level practices as a redshirt in 2011 and is
ready to contribute in 2012.
Freshman lefty Ty Butler (Wadesville, Ind./North
Posey High School) played at the top of the lineup
during the fall season.
Freshmen Derek Blank (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan
High School) and Jake Welsh (Buchanan, Mich./Bu-
chanan High School) were teammates for a success-
ful high school program and bring their winning ways
to IU East. Both could play in the middle-to-upper
portions of the IU East lineup.
Three more freshmen were high school teammates
- Brian Luke (Connersville, Ind./Connersville High
School), Josh Lone (Connersville, Ind./Connersville
High School) and Zach Smith (Connersville, Ind./
Connersville High School). Luke and Lone were the
top two singles players for their high school team.
Smith is a doubles ace.
Fellow freshmen Zeth Ellis (Richmond, Ind./North-
eastern High School) and Johnny Gray (Elkhart, Ind./
Jimtown High School) will redshirt this season.
“All of the players are capable of hitting with and
handling power and aggressively playing the ball
around the court,” Ratchford said. “We are fairly

well-balanced in singles and doubles, but we need to
develop our consistency and shot selection to maxi-
mize our capability to win.”
The scheduleThe Red Wolves established a schedule with 17
matches in 65 days.
The schedule includes six regular season home
matches at Glen Miller Park. The home opener is
March 11 against KIAC power Indiana University
Southeast.
IU East will play home KIAC matches against Berea
College on March 25 and on April 14 and against
Asbury University on April 25.
The Red Wolves meet reigning KIAC regular season
and tournament champion Brescia University on
March 31 in Owensboro, Ky.
IU East faces first-year KIAC member Saint Louis
College of Pharmacy on the neutral courts of IU
Southeast on April 14.
The KIAC switched to a single round-robin confer-
ence schedule, freeing up several match dates for
IU East to play against new teams. The schedule
format change will allow IU East to face respected
NCAA Division III programs Wittenberg University
and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the
first time.
IU East heads crosstown on April 12 to face Earlham
College, an NCAA Division III national tournament
team in 2011.
The KIAC championship match will take place on
IU East’s home courts. The Red Wolves will host the
six-team KIAC tournament on May 4 and 5 at Glen
Miller Park and at Richmond High School.
“We will play a variety of opponents with various
levels of play,” Ratchford said. “This will enable
us to develop our methods of play and shot devel-

opment under a wide range of match play condi-
tions.
“Our goal is to make our shots solid and have meth-
ods of play that can adjust to variations in opponents’
level of play and playing styles.”
The goalsIU East was the No. 4 pick in the six-team KIAC in a
preseason poll of the league’s coaches.
Ratchford aims higher than fourth place. He says the
Red Wolves can move up by establishing:
1) A solid, consistent method of play
2) A “team” and foundation for future success
3) A winning record
“Matches may be challenging as I expect we will be
on our opponents’ radar screens with them fully pre-
pared to play us,” Ratchford said. “But I am optimis-
tic we will acquire the skills, shots and match play
temperament to achieve a winning season.”

Erskine Ratchford, a
nationally ranked ten-
nis player who resides in
Richmond, was named
men’s and women’s ten-
nis head coach at Indi-
ana University East on
Aug. 1, 2011.
“I am excited about the
upcoming tennis season
and feel that we have a
great group of men and women players who look to
be competitive this year. It is a privilege to have the
opportunity to work with and lead these men and
women in the upcoming matches,” Ratchford said.
“I will do my best to properly represent, instruct,
direct and develop a winning program that is reflec-
tive of the successful traditions of the other sports
programs at IU East.”
Ratchford has ranked in the top 100 in the nation
and the top 10 in the Midwest in his age group.
He served as a volunteer coach for IU East during
the 2010-11 season. He led the IU East women’s
tennis program to a 12-win improvement during the
2011 fall season, the biggest turnaround in the state
among programs that play their main season in the
fall.
“The only thing that could make this news better is if
we could also let Erskine play in our lineup, because
he is that good of a player” said IU East assistant
athletic director Kyle Wright.
“He developed a strong rapport with our players last
season and is the perfect person to push our teams
to a level of contending for conference champion-
ships and national tournament appearances on a
regular basis.”
Ratchford is a North Carolina State University alum-
ni. He previously was Director of Engineering for
Marvel Industries in Richmond.
“IU East and east central Indiana can be a hotbed
for tennis because of its location between several
strong tennis communities,” Ratchford said, noting
IU East’s proximity to cities like Dayton, Indianapolis
and Cincinnati.
“Players who come to IU East have a great opportu-
nity to take advantage of the resources that are avail-
able to tennis players in this area.”
