TREES AGAINST THE FCSIndiana State is 8-2 in their last 10 FCS contests after winning five-straight to close out the 2018 season. ISU is currently 3-2 against FCS opponents with wins over Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois in 2019. THIRD DOWN DEFENSEThe defensive unit of the Sycamores has been stout this season on third down, holding opponents to just a 30.4 percent conversion rate which is 16th-best in the nation. The Indiana State defense held Western Illinois to just 1-of-15 on third down on the day during a Homecoming win.

DEFENSIVE DUO SETTING THE TONELinebackers Clayton Glasco and Jonas Griffith have dominated the defensive side of the ball for the Sycamores in 2019, doubling their teammates in tackles. Glasco is leading Indiana State with 59 tackles while Griffith has made 54 stops with the next best mark in tackles on the squad being 26. The duo have combined for 15 of the team’s 43 tackles-for-loss, five of the 14 sacks and two of the six interceptions.

NUNEZ SETS ALL-TIME PROGRAM MARKS IN FIELD GOALS, PAT’S AND SCORINGSenior kicker Jerry Nunez etched his name in Sycamore history after breaking three program records over a two-week period. The Naples, Florida native secured the all-time scoring (221) as well as the all-time field goal (42) mark in a win over Eastern Illinois. Just a week earlier, Nunez set the ISU all-time PAT record – a record that had stood since 1985. Nunez has currently scored 228 points, kicked 45 field goals and 93 PATs.

LIMITING THE DIRTY LAUNDRY One area that a Mallory coached team has excelled at over his three seasons at the helm of the Sycamores has been discipline. The Sycamores currently rank 11th nationally and tops in the MVFC in fewest penalties with just 26 on the season. The Sycamores finished 2017 and 2018 ranked 19th and 27th repectively in fewest penalties.

LIMITING GAINS THROUGH THE AIRISU secondary has been solid through six games, allowing just 163.8 yards per game passing. Starting cornerbacks Keawvis Cummings (7) and Mekhi Ware (3) have done a good job breaking up passes while the defensive line and front seven have pressured opposing quarterbacks 16 times. In total, ISU defenders have been aggressive on pass breakups, recording 29 on the season.

PRESEASON HONORS FOR GRIFFITHRedshirt senior Jonas Griffith earned Preseason All-American honors from both HERO Sports and STATS FCS entering the season. Griffith started in 11 games in 2018 at linebacker, leading the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 132 tackles, including 81 unassisted stops. He was tops in the nation with 7.4 solo tackles per game and fifth with 12 tackles per game. In total, the Louisville, Kentucky native recorded 9.5 tackles-for-loss for 27 yards including 3.5 sacks. He recorded double-digit stops in eight games while making a season high 18 stops in back-to-back games against South Dakota State and Missouri State.

GRIFFITH NAMED TO BUCK BUCHANAN WATCH LISTRedshirt senior Jonas Griffith was named to the Buck Buchanan Watch List this preseason. Griffith is one of 25 nominees, including four in the MVFC to earn the recognition, presented by STATS to the most outstanding defensive player in the nation. The Louisville, Kentucky native was named a Preseason All-American by HERO Sports and STATS FCS after earning All-American status from three different publications as well as All-MVFC honors following the conclusion of the 2018 campaign. Griffith led the Sycamores and ranked fifth nationally in tackles.

GRIFFITH JOINS 300-TACKLE CLUB; CRACKS TOP-10 IN SINGLE SEASON TACKLES IN 2018With 16 tackles against Eastern Kentucky, redshirt senior Jonas Griffith entered his name into the Sycamore record book forever after joining the 300-tackles club. The Louisville, Kentucky native becomes just the 18th player in program history to reach the mark, joining former teammate Katrell Moss who completed the feat in 2018. He is looking to become just the third player in program history to record three-straight seasons of 100 or more tackles. Griffith finished tied for 7th in program history in single season tackles after recording 132 a year ago.

GRIFFITH CLOSE TO JOINING ALL-TIME TOP-10 TACKLE LISTJonas Griffith is currently 13th in all-time tackles in program history after passing Tony Albrinck Saturday at USD. Griffith currently has 330 tackles and is just seven tackles away from passing ISU Hall of Famer, John Allman (336).

SYCAMORES WITH FOUR TAKEAWAYS AGAINST PANTHERSIndiana State put on a defensive clinic against Eastern Illinois, forcing four turnovers in the game. As a squad, ISU snagged three interceptions in the game while forcing a fumble on EIU’s first drive. It was the most takeaways by a Sycamore defense since 2017 when ISU intercepted Southern Illinois’ Sam Straub three times while recovering a fumble.

LEAD AT THE BREAK AND WIN THE GAMEAll seven games that the Sycamores walked away from victorious in 2018, they were leading heading into the locker room. ISU’s largest deficit entering halftime last season was 11 points against Missouri State. In both wins in 2019, the Sycamores have gone into the locker room ahead.

IT STARTS UP FRONTAfter filling in the pieces on the offensive line a year ago, the Sycamores have found consistency up front with five players. Tate Leavitt, Isaiah Edwards, Wyatt Wozniak, James Lang and Kevin Kcehowski started all 11 games up front and have been key parts to the Sycamore rushing attack. ISU has rushed for 2,511 yards after just 1,185 yards in 2017. In 2019, the Sycamores return five fifth-year seniors to the offensive line, including four starters from a year ago. The average weight of our offensive line in 2018 was 302.6 pounds. In just one year, that number has jumped to 332.

A MAINSTAY AT CENTERRedshirt senior Wyatt Wozniak has been the steady hand on the Sycamore offensive line, starting 28-straight games. Wozniak is one of the most experience interior lineman on the roster after seeing game action in five contests in 2016 including three starts. Wozniak is the lone Sycamore on offense that started every game at the center position in 2017. Wozniak, a Cypress, Texas product, led the charge from his center position, as the Sycamores racked up 569 total yards of offense at No. 3 South Dakota State in 2018 -- the most yards since the Sycamores put up 671 yards against Quincy in 2013.

MALLORY TABBED MVFC COACH OF THE YEAR IN 2018After a winless 2017 campaign for the Sycamores, Curt Mallory and his staff orchestrated the biggest turnaround in collegiate football in 2018 after leading the Sycamores to a 7-4 finish, a third-place finish in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and a No. 22 national ranking. The Sycamores closed out the season winning five-straight games, including three on the road to make push for the postseason. Entering the season, ISU was tabbed to finish last in the MVFC with just one voter not picking the Sycamores to finish last. It marked the first MVFC Coach of the Year honor for ISU since Trent Miles earned the award in 2010. Mallory was also a finalist for the STATS FCS Eddie Robinson award - the National Coach of the Year award.

BOYLE SUFFERS SEASON ENDING INJURYPreseason All-Missouri Valley Football Conference quarterback Ryan Boyle sustained a knee injury against Eastern Illinois that was later confirmed as an ACL tear, and an injury that will sideline the redshirt senior for the remainder of the 2019 season. Named a captain by his teammates entering the season, the Urbandale, Iowa native is the second-leading rusher for the Sycamores with 171 yards on 44 carries while throwing for 508 yards and a pair of touchdowns over four games. Boyle entered the season as the reigning MVFC Newcomer of the Year following a breakout season in 2018 where he amassed 1,627 yards passing and 12 touchdowns on his way to earning Second Team All-MVFC honors. He set a program record with seven touchdowns (five passing and two rushing) during a triple overtime victory of South Dakota before leading the team to five-straight wins to close out the regular season.

INOKE MOALA NAMED MVFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKInoke Moala earned the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week award after ISU’s 19-7 victory over Eastern Kentucky in week three. The honor marks the first for Moala in his career and the second of the season for the Sycamores. Moala, a Mishawaka, Indiana native, finished with eight tackles against the Colonels, including two sacks for 11 yards and a pair of forced fumbles on the final drive of the game for EKU. As a defensive, Indiana State held Eastern Kentucky to 0-for-3 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth down in the fourth quarter. The Colonels converted four of 15 third downs in the game and were forced to punt six times.

KALEB BREWER EARNS MVFC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK AFTER KANSASIndiana State’s Kaleb Brewer earned the League’s Defensive Player of the Week award following his performance against Kansas in Lawrence to open the season. As a team, ISU forced three turnovers from the Jayhawks in the game, all three being fumbles. Brewer, a Bloomington, Indiana native forced what might have been the most important fumble of the day when he sacked KU’s Carter Stanley at the Jayhawk two-yard line, forcing the ball loose before

BOYLE NAMED 2018 MVFC NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR IN 2018Ryan Boyle put together a masterful season under center for the Sycamores in 2018. After making his first start in week three against Eastern Illinois, Boyle went on to lead the Sycamore for the remainder of the season. He finished with 1,627 yards, 12 passing touchdowns and a 62.4 completion percent to lead the MVFC. A dual-threat option, Boyle was second on the team with 610 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground. A DECADE OF POSTSEASON DOMINANCE FOR THE VALLEYIn the current decade, MVFC teams are 59-25 in the playoffs, and only one other conference (the CAA at 40-36) has a winning record. Since 2004, league teams have combined for a 73-38 record in playoff games, with seven titles – both tops in the FCS. Notably, only the MVFC (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018), CAA Football (2016) and Big Sky Conference (2010) have an FCS title this decade. Valley Football is celebrating its 35th season in 2019. In its first 34 seasons the league owns nine national crowns.

MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CELEBRATES 35 YEARS OF EXCELLENCEThe 2019 season is an anniversary for the Missouri Valley Football Conference as it celebrates its 35th birthday this year (founded in 1985 as the Gateway Conference). HEAD COACH CURT MALLORY

After being named the 21st head coach in the history of Indiana State on Jan. 23, 2017, Mallory enters his third season at the helm of the program in 2019.

“Curt Mallory is a grinder who has coaching in his DNA,” Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales said. “His dedication to developing young men into leaders on the field and in life has been a core piece of his coaching philosophy throughout his career. He will raise the competitive bar and hold all accountable to that end. He is the right person ¬at the right time to lead this program into becoming a nationally recognized school. I am excited to welcome Curt, his wife, Lori, and his three children into the Sycamore family.”

Mallory, a 22-year veteran as an assistant coach in the college ranks, is part of one of the more prominent football families in the United States, as he is the son of Indiana University’s all-time winningest head coach Bill Mallory, who coached the Hoosiers from 1984-96. Bill Mallory was also the head coach at Miami of Ohio (1969-73), Colorado (1974-78) and Northern Illinois (1980-83) over an illustrious 27-year coaching career. Mallory also has two brothers in the NFL coaching ranks: Doug, the defensive backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons, and Mike, a special teams coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I’m extremely excited to be coming back home to the state of Indiana to become part of the Indiana State University family,” Mallory said. “I would like to thank President Dan Bradley, Sherard Clinkscales and the whole administration at Indiana State for this great honor. This University and the city of Terre Haute are very intriguing to me as a coach, as there is a lot of potential to build a strong football program here. Most of all, it feels amazing to be back in this great state again and work alongside all the wonderful people I know throughout the state.”

In Mallory’s first season in Terre Haute, the Sycamores finished 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with seven games coming against nationally ranked foes. He coached five All-MVFC players in 2017 including linebacker Jonas Griffith and tight end Jacquet McClendon who were tabbed to the Second Team while running back LeMonte Booker, punter Thomas Bouldin and linebacker Katrell Moss were named Honorable Mention.

Mallory and his staff then went on to mount the biggest turnaround in collegiate football in 2018 after leading the Sycamores to a 7-4 finish, a third-place finish in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and a No. 22 national ranking. The Sycamores closed out the season winning five-straight games, including three on the road to make push for the postseason. Entering the season, ISU was tabbed to finish last in the MVFC with just one voter not picking the Sycamores to finish last.

With the turnaround, Mallory became the just the second head coach in program history to earn MVFC Coach of the Year honors.

He was named a finalist for the STATS FCS Eddie Robinson award, which honors the National Coach of the Year. Mallory was tabbed the FCS Coach of the Year by Phil Steele.

In year two Mallory coached 10 All-MVFC honorees including the League’s Newcomer of the Year in quarterback Ryan Boyle. Running back Ja’Quan Keys and linebacker Jonas Griffith were tabbed with First Team All-MVFC honors. Boyle, center Wyatt Wozniak, linebacker Katrell Moss, defensive back Rondell Green and place kicker Jerry Nunez earned Second Team accolades. The Sycamores also claimed three Honorable Mention selections in offensive linemen Isaiah Edwards and Tate Leavitt to go along with wide receiver Dante Hendrix.

Indiana State saw five players named to the MVFC Newcomer Team after the Sycamores put four on the offensive side of the ball led by quarterback Ryan Boyle. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Dante Hendrix also earned the honor while a pair of offensive linemen in Isaiah Edwards and Tate Leavitt rounded out the offensive honors for the Trees. First-year safety Denzel Bonner picked up the honor for the Sycamores on the defensive side of the ball.

Prior to coming to Indiana State, Mallory was the pass coordinator and secondary coach under former North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl at the University of Wyoming in 2015 and 2016. There, Mallory mentored 2016 Thorpe Award semifinalist Andrew Wingard, who was a First-Team All-Conference honoree as a sophomore. The previous year in 2015, Mallory helped Wingard and Marcus Epps to nods as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Mallory spent the previous four seasons at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, as a secondary coach under Brady Hoke. There, he worked with several superb defenses, including the seventh-best in the FBS his final year in 2014 that only allowed 311.3 YPG. That same year, Michigan ranked 15th in rushing defense (117.7 YPG), tied for 19th in passing defense (193.7 YPG) and 27th in scoring defense (22.4 PPG).

The Wolverine secondary also finished top-15 in the nation in pass defense in both 2011 and 2012. The 2011 defense was an especially impressive feat that first season, as they jumped from 107th in scoring defense in 2010 to sixth nationally in 2011.

In Ann Arbor, Mallory had the opportunity to coach current Jacksonville Jaguars safety Jarrod Wilson, as well as help recruit and coach 2016 Heisman Trophy finalist and projected top 2017 NFL Draft pick Jabrill Peppers during his freshman season in 2014.

Mallory was the defensive coordinator at Akron for the 2010 season, and before that he spent five successful seasons at the University of Illinois from 2005-09 under head coach Ron Zook (now the special teams coordinator of the Green Bay Packers). Mallory’s first two seasons in 2005 and 2006 were spent as the secondary coach, and

his final three years he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator.

At Illinois, Mallory was instrumental in one of the best teams in Illini history in the 2007 Rose Bowl team. That year, Mallory’s Illini defense held opponents to under 20 points per game en route to a 9-4 finish. Illinois also ranked second in the Big Ten in passing defense (182.2 YPG) in 2006 and led the Big Ten in sacks and tackles for loss in 2008. Mallory’s 2006 secondary only allowed 11 passing touchdowns and 6.5 yards per pass attempt all season.

At Illinois, Mallory’s prized pupil was All-American Vontae Davis, who was a two-time Thorpe Award semifinalist and a 2009 First-Round NFL Draft Pick of the Miami Dolphins. Davis has been a two-time Pro Bowl selection during his NFL career and has been a member of the Indianapolis Colts since 2012.

Other notable pupils at Illinois include current Detroit Lions safety Tavon Wilson, a 2012 Second Round pick of the New England Patriots and a member of New England’s Super Bowl XLIX champion team, and Jeremy “J” Leman, a 2007 All-American linebacker for the Illini Rose Bowl team and current Big Ten Network color analyst.

Mallory spent the previous three seasons at Indiana as a secondary coach from 2002-04, which was preceded by one year as the secondary coach at Central Michigan in 2001 and six seasons at Ball State from 1995-2000 in charge of both the linebackers and secondary. Mallory was on staff for Ball State’s 1996 team that went to the Las Vegas Bowl.

His coaching career began as a student assistant at Michigan in 1992, followed by two years as a graduate assistant under his father at Indiana in 1993-94.

Mallory was a four-year player at the University of Michigan from 1988-91 under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler his first two seasons, followed by Gary Moeller his last two. Mallory was on four Wolverine teams that won a Big Ten title, including three teams that went to a Rose Bowl. His freshman season in 1988 he was on a Rose Bowl champion team that finished the season ranked No. 4 nationally after defeating USC. Mallory capped off his Wolverine career with an interception in Michigan’s 35-3 win over Ole Miss in the 1991 Gator Bowl. Longtime Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who led the Wolverines to a national title in 1997, was Mallory’s defensive coordinator during his playing career.

Mallory earned his bachelor’s in sport management and communication from the University of Michigan in 1992, and he finished his master’s in outdoor recreation at Indiana University in 1999. Mallory and his wife, Lori, have three children: sons James and Sam, and a daughter, Margo.

The Bison have been picked first in the preseason poll for eight-straight seasons. North Dakota State has earned the league title for eight-straight years, four times sharing it with another league school. This year, NDSU received 32 of 40 first-place votes and 392 total points in the poll. South Dakota State earned the second spot in the poll, finishing with 348 total points while picking up four first-place votes. Illinois State (289 points), Indiana State (279 points) and UNI (266 points) were tightly bunched for the third-, fourth- and fifth-place spots, while Illinois State (3) and Indiana State (1) also received first-place mentions.
