Advisors, Sweethearts, and fellow DeMolay, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to serve as your 76th State Master Councilor. I am looking forward to this year, and with your help I hope that it will be the best year Indiana DeMolay has ever seen. The State Officers and I have already put many hours into the programs and events that will be taking place throughout the year. We are very excited to introduce some of these programs to you, and hope that you will enjoy them. As most of you know our statewide theme this year is Super Mario Bros. This theme will be incorporated into virtually everything we do, and I look forward to seeing how much fun we can have with it. Among the programs that are in place this year is our brand new traveling program. This program is like no other. The goal will be to collect the most Coins as you travel about the state visiting different chapters. For each chapter you visit you will receive one gold coin certificate. If you receive the Hoosier Hammer on a visit you will receive one additional coin certificate. Another program in place is the Membership Program that will run through March 2007. The Chapter with the most new members between now and the deadline will receive a Mario Party at the Chateau! It is my goal that each chapter hosts their own Initiation before next Conclave. The State Officers and I are ready and willing to help any chapter that needs it. Indiana DeMolay has been doing great things over these past years, but I want to take it a step further and make Indiana DeMolay be the best there is! We have won the Heartland Ritual Tournament two years in a row, and this year it will be right here in our home court. I want each of you to strive so that you may be a participant in this competition, and I trust that we will not let our title go! I want everyone to know that Indiana DeMolay is the best there is when it comes to ritual. So let’s prove it! The biggest thing I want to push this year is service; service to our community, to our neighbor, to our sponsoring bodies, and to anyone who may need our help. This is, after all, a service and leadership organization, and what better way to spread the name of DeMolay than through service.

2006-2007 State Officer Program Guide 4

Through service we can build better young men and better leaders. I encourage each of you to hold some sort of community service project this year with your chapters, and please let me know when you do. I would certainly like to help. Let’s get the name of DeMolay out into the world, and lets do it through our kind deeds. Fraternally, Ryan T. Dunigan State Master Councilor

2006-2007 Mario Membership Drive

Here we go! It’s a brand new year for Indiana DeMolay, and

what better way to kick it off than with a great membership drive with an excellent theme. Super Mario Brothers will play a big role in Indiana DeMolay this year, and therefore, will be the theme for this year’s membership drive.

This year’s goal is a total of 200 new members, and the state

has a splendid program to encourage membership. Beginning now and running until April 1, 2007, the state will keep tabs on who has brought in the most members. That chapter will win a Mario Party at the Chateau. Here is how it will work. At Conclave, the DeMolay who has brought in the most members will win a plaque and their choice of three mystery prizes. Afterwards, two names will be randomly drawn out of a hat, and those members will have their choice of the other two prizes. Also at Conclave, the Chapters that meet their membership quota will receive a very nice plaque to congratulate them on meeting their membership goal. So what are you waiting for? Let’s go!

Collecting Coins

This year the Indiana DeMolay State Officers have decided to have a statewide traveling competition that every chapter can take part in. The way the competition will work is through traveling and visiting as many chapters in the state as possible. When you visit a chapter you will collect from one of the chapter’s Advisors and the Master Councilor’s signatures verifying that you were there. Then following the visitation you will send this form to DeMolay headquarters in Franklin. The office will then contact you and we will send you a Mario coin certificate for your visitation. The chapter with the most coins by Conclave will be given a mystery prize worthy of Mario’s hard work. In addition to collecting one coin for your visitation you will also receive an extra coin if you are able to collect the Hoosier Hammer from one of your Chapter visits around the state. Good luck to all and collect those coins!!!! There are a few stipulations to be eligible for Mario’s golden coin: 1. For the visitation to be eligible for a coin the visiting Chapter must have at least two active members and two advisors present at the chapter visitation. 2. Visits must be to a Chapter excluding your own. 3. Visits to State Events are not eligible for coins. 4. Cannot visit the same chapter more than once a quarter and still gain a coin. 5. When you have visited ten different chapters, you will gain a five coin bonus to your total. 6. In the event of a tie the winner will be chosen by overall mileage traveled through the course of the year, during the competition. OF THE YEAR PROGRAMS:

This is an exciting way to recognize members, advisors, and supporters, as well as observe the precepts of Civic Service and Education. Here’s how it works. Each Chapter selects a nominee in EACH category. Fill out the required paper work and submit as many additional letters of recommendation as you choose. Each nominee will receive a beautiful certificate to be presented at the Chapter level. That individual selected as the Chapter winner moves on for consideration to be the statewide winner. From all of the Chapter winners, a panel will select one State winner in each category. All nominees will be invited to be Indiana DeMolay’s guest at the Grand Banquet at Conclave and the winner will receive special recognition. The winners will represent those individuals who best exemplify the spirit of DeMolay or its lessons on the Chapter or local level, as determined by the panel, and supported by the nominating documentation. DeMolay of the Year – This is an “active” member of the Chapter. This individual’s nomination will need a supporting narrative outlining his unique qualifications for this honor. This person should demonstrate the best qualities of what DeMolay stands for. Supporting letters can come from members, advisors, other chapters and/or adults who know the nominee; school, church, and scout leaders, etc. Ritualist of the Year – This individual may not be your most award-winning Ritualist. He should be your “best.” He can be the person who best typifies what DeMolay Ritual is and who strives for the highest quality performance any time the ritual is given. Then, again, he may be your best Chapter Ritualist. Supporting letters can come from Chapter members, advisors, other Chapters, and/or members and/or adults who know the nominees unique commitment to quality ritual. Sportsman of the Year – This is not intended to be an award for the finest athlete outside of DeMolay. This individual may have the best attitude toward competitions of all kinds. He can be the person who best typifies what DeMolay sportsmanship is about. On the other hand, this could be an outstanding high school or college athlete who is a member of

2006-2007 State Officer Program Guide 25

the organization. It is a way for the Chapter to recognize his athletic prowess, or the active participations by a member in the Chapter’s athletic program. Supporting letters can come from Chapter members, advisors, other Chapters, and/or members and/or adults who know the nominee. Advisor of the Year – This individual’s nomination will need a supporting narrative outlining his unique qualifications for this honor. This person should demonstrate the best qualities of what a DeMolay Advisor should be. The nominee does not have to be the Chapter Dad or Chairman. The Chapter he/she represents should be performing at a high level and he/she should clearly be the advisor most responsible for that Chapter’s success. Supporting letters can come from Chapter members, advisors, other Chapters, and/or members and/or adults who know the nominee; school, church and work, etc. Community Leader – This award will go to an individual who has demonstrated their commitment to the young people in our communities. As the young men in DeMolay grow and develop, they encounter any number of dedicated adults who try and help them reach their full potential. These people are the ones that we wish to recognize for making a difference in our communities. Some professions that may fall into this category are: teachers, counselors or other school leaders, a pastor/reverend or a member of the clergy, or a public official. Student – This is an award that will recognize an active DeMolay for achievement in scholastics. Several ideas that may be considered in this area are; a commitment to academics, willingness to help others, determined resolves to overcome obstacles and demonstrate hard work. This award does not necessarily have to go to the student with the highest grades. Rather, it is intended to go to a DeMolay who has worked hard to achieve certain personal goals. Masonic Leader – This award will recognize a member of the Masonic family who has been instrumental in advancing a particular Masonic organization to greater heights. Chapters should consider someone who has honored commitments and sacrificed in order to grow, sustain, or lead another Masonic body other than DeMolay.

Indiana DeMolay Chapter Of The Year Program Instruction Sheet

COTY program participants, Thank you for your interest in competing for Chapter Of The Year. The program is designed to urge Chapters to be well rounded and self-sufficient, and hopefully the membership of your Chapter will be motivated to work harder in some of their weaker areas because of the desire to win COTY. If this is the case, your Chapter will benefit greatly from attempting to reach the goals laid out in this program. The instructions are simple. To compete for the title of Indiana DeMolay Chapter Of The Year, your Chapter must:

1) Complete all eight of the required items listed on the Qualification Requirement Checklist. As the items are completed, please check them off and record the date.

2) Complete at least six of the eight subjective items listed on the Qualification Requirement Checklist. As the items are

completed, please check them off and record the date. If your Chapter is able to complete more than six it will help it stand out.

3) Sign and date the Qualification Requirement Checklist when completed. 4) Fill out the Chapter Questionnaire. The questions that require a long answer may be completed on a separate sheet of paper

and attached to the form. Also, you may include supporting documentation to help fully explain any of the items on the form (i.e. your term calendars, photos from events, copies of installation programs, signed visitation forms, etc). Point of emphasis: Please be aware that the selection committee will not be giving bonus points for a dazzling multimedia display or a packet that looks as if it were put together by a professional marketing agency. The goal of the supporting documentation is simply to supplement the Chapter Questionnaire, not to replace it.

5) Send the completed forms and supporting documentation to the Indiana DeMolay office by the date specified on the forms. The COTY packets will then be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Senior DeMolays who are not associated with any of the competing Chapters. The committee will attempt to make an unbiased decision based solely upon the answers and supporting documentation in the submitted packets. The winner will be announced at Conclave with the rest of the “Of The Year” awards. This program is radically different from those in recent years, and it will require much more effort from the competing Chapters. Following are some suggestions to help make the packet submission process successful:

• Shortly after Conclave, select a COTY committee to be responsible for documenting the Chapter’s progress and call for

regular reports from the committee chairman. Also select an Advisor to work with the committee. • Review the qualification requirements and the questions on the questionnaire. Address as many as possible in the term plans

of the Master Councilors. • Do not procrastinate. Many of the questions can be completed throughout the year, so don’t wait until the last second to try

to pull things together. • Try not to double your work. If you compete in State Officer contests pertaining to publications, DeMolay week, obligatory

days, visitations, etc., make sure that you make copies of the forms before you send them in for the SO contest. They can also be attached to the COTY forms instead of entering the same information twice.

Good luck in your attempt to become the Chapter Of The Year. Win or lose, we feel that by implementing a plan to reach that prize your Chapter will be doing the things needed to become stronger and better represent DeMolay in Indiana. The COTY program committee
