In today’s world it doesn’t seem much is around for 25 years. Businesses come and go through mergers and acquisitions and many have succumbed to the tough economic times.

The Indiana Independent Automobile Dealers Association (IIADA) is justifiably proud to be celebrating 25 years of service to Indiana’s independent auto dealers.

David Crist, Steve Norris and Terry Goins incorporated the Indiana Independent Automobile Dealers Association on Dec. 17, 1987. They established the purpose of the association as:

• To serve the public interest and to benefit independent automobile dealers by fostering high standards of business conduct that merit public confidence.

• To disseminate information helpful to independent dealers and to facilitate the exchange of ideas among members.

• To sustain friendly, cooperative relationships among all motor vehicle dealers and the agencies with which they do business.

• To present information to the public and to governmental agencies that will help them to understand the role of the independent automobile dealer in our economy.

• To encourage constructive legislation and regulations and to discourage destructive legislation and regulations.

• To support the association’s Code of Ethics.For those reasons, IIADA was recognized as

a not-for-profit entity by the Internal Revenue Service and Indiana Department of Revenue.

IIADA became a state affiliate of the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA), and all members of IIADA have membership in NIADA. NIADA has represented quality independent automobile dealers for more than 65 years.

NIADA is your national legislative advocate, protecting your business interests. The association consistently brings you industry education, valuable information, services and benefits designed to prepare members for an ever-changing marketplace.

NIADA was founded in 1946 to lobby for the repeal of rationing of tires and automotive parts after World War II. The efforts put forward by the organization under the leadership of founding president Charlie Hillard resulted in the repeal of those wartime restrictions by the end of 1947.

Code of Ethics• We will have a general duty of integrity,

honor and fair dealing toward the general public.

• We will comply with all city, county, state and federal laws and shall endeavor to keep ourselves informed of those laws governing our business.

• We will not intentionally injure the

business reputation of another member or competitor.

• We will employ truth and accuracy in advertising and selling.

• We will stand behind any guarantee given with the sale of a motor vehicle.

• We will not perform any act that would bring disrepute to the motor vehicle industry.

• We will expose or halt, where found, any scheme designed to deceive or defraud the automobile buying public and aid in prosecuting those guilty of such acts.

• We will constantly strive to improve business methods to the end that the public will be better served.

• We will encourage the American system of free enterprise.

Throughout the years, IIADA has given generously to charities. The association provided the family of Ryan White, an Indiana AIDS patient, with a vehicle so he could continue to receive medical treatment. IIADA works continuously with legislators on behalf of Indiana’s independent dealers. IIADA is responsible for the 21 Day Title Law, which

allows dealers to sell a vehicle without a title in hand.

IIADA has been extremely fortunate to have dedicated leadership. Several members of the IIADA board of directors have served the association tirelessly for more than 20 years: Ed White of White’s Auto Sales, Fritz Kreutzinger of Fritz in Fishers, and Kim Graham of Kim Graham Auto Sales.

IIADA works with auto auctions in promoting business standards and values. Several Indiana auctions have been long-term partners with IIADA. They include ADE of Indianapolis, ADESA Indianapolis, Clark County Auto Auction, Dyer Auto Auction, Indiana Auto Auction, Indianapolis Car Exchange, Kesler-Schaefer Auto Auction, Manheim Indianapolis, Manheim Louisville and Wolfe’s Evansville, South Bend and Terre Haute auctions.

Debbie Andersen, executive director of the Indiana Independent Automobile Dealers Association, was selected by her peers as NIADA’s 2012 Association Executive of the Year.

Andersen, has headed the IIADA since 2001 after serving six years as the association’s accountant, and has used her background as a CPA to put IIADA in a strong financial position.

“The association was going through hard economic times,” said 2011 Executive of the Year Jim Mitchell of Ohio, who presented the award to Andersen during the 66th Annual NIADA Convention & Expo at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

“But today it is on solid financial ground and the association’s membership has grown to its highest level.”

The winner is chosen by the executives of the state independent auto dealers associations nationwide.

“I’m very honored,” Andersen said, “because it’s a selection by my peers, and to be honored by your peers, I think, is the ultimate in respect.”

When Andersen took on the executive director job, she knew from her stint as IIADA’s accountant that getting association’s financial house in order would be her first order of business.

“I knew I was getting into a big financial mess,” she said. “That’s why I was brought in to be the CPA in the first place. They were very financially challenged. When the executive director resigned, I thought, ‘Yeah, I’d kind of like to do that.’ And I truly enjoy it.”

Andersen cut the association’s expenses and

began using fundraising events to increase revenue without raising the members’ dues.

“We cut expenses immediately, and you look for other sources of income,” she said. “It sounds simple, but we had to be creative. We had to think outside the box. Dues was not the place to go. We needed to raise money but we didn’t want to do it on the backs of the dealers. And, of course, we also slashed expenses. I didn’t spend if they didn’t have it.”

Growing up in the Detroit area, Andersen has been around the car business and car people her entire life. While attending Northern Michigan University, she worked on the assembly line for Federal Mogul, a major parts supplier to auto manufacturers.

“I worked my way through college working in automotive factories,” she said. “We made all the plastic parts, like the dash, on injection molding machines. They came off the assembly line and you had to trim all the plastic off of them.”

Andersen said the biggest step she has seen IIADA take during her tenure has been in its relationship with the state government.

“We have grown tremendously in recognition within the state government<” she said. “Our state officials, from the governor to the secretary of state to the director of the bureau of motor vehicles, all look to the association now for advice and suggestions, which was not the case when I came on board 11 years ago.

“That is huge. That’s probably the thing I’m most proud of.”
