    First Revision)NATIONAL FOREWORDThis Indian~Standard (First Revision) which is identical with IS0 1609 : 1986 Vacuum technology-Flange dimensions: issued by the International Organization for Standardkzation (ISO), ~has beenadopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 26 March 1990 on the recommendation of the ChemicalEngineering Plants and Related Equipment Sectional Committee (HMD 17) and approval of the HeavyMechanical Engineering Division Council.This standard was first issued in 1971 as Dimensions for vacuum flanges. Consequent upon thepublication of IS0 1609 : 1986, this standard (including its title) has been revised by adoptingIS0 1609 : 1986, to bring it in complete alignment with international practices.The text of IS0 standard hasbeen approved as suitable for publication as Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are,however, not identical tothose used in Indian Standards. Attentionis particularly drawn to the following :

    1 Scope and field of applicationThis International Standard specifies the dimensions for flangesand collars usedin vacuum technology.

    The dimensions ensure interchangeability between bolted,clamped and rotatable flanges,a) whether the assembly be homogeneous (for example,bolted flenges or clamped flanges) or heterogeneous (forexample, bolted flanges assembled with clamped flangeseither by means of bolts or clamps or by means of bolts androtatable flanges) ;b) whether the sealing rings used with the flanges beelastomer O-rings or metal sealing rings, provided that theyare compatible with the linear sealing loads given inannex 4.

    3 Dimensions

    3.1 General

    3.1.1 The dimensions of the flanges or collars shall conformto those specified in tables 1,2 and 3 and shown in figures 12and 3. These dimensions are for finished products and do notinclude allowance for machining. Flanges or collars withnominal bores of 10 to 40 inclusive, given in tables 1, 2 and 3,accept the corresponding quick-release couplings specified in1803861/l. Relevant dimensions and tolerances are specifiedin annex 3.

    3.1.2 The selection of materials shall be compatiblewith therequirements ~for flanges and collars used in vacuumtechnology and with the dimensions given in tables 1, 2 and 3.

    3.1.3 In order to ensure the interchangeability of vacuumcomponents, the flanges shall be aligned so that the bolt holesare spaced equidistantly about and off the symmetrical plane ofthe component.

    3.2 Nominal bore 3.5.2 Limits3.2.1 The tables provide a series of values of nominal boresintended to identify the flanges or collars.

    The minimum mating face is defined by diameter E in table 1and S in table 2, and by diameter F in tables 1 and~2.

    3.2.2 These values follow the progression of the RlO series ofpreferred numbers (see IS0 3) from which only the term 12.5has been eliminated.

    3.5.3 ProfileThe flange sealing face shall be flat and no part of the flangeshall project in relation to this plane.

    3.2.3 The values of nominal bore belonging to the R5 series ofpreferred numbers (see IS0 3) are as follows: 10, 16, 25, 40,63, 100, 160, 250, 400, 630 and 1000. They correspond tovalues intended to permit, in the long term, the adoption of areduced series of nominal bores.

    3.6 Width of the collar onto which the clamphooks, GThe value for the width depends on the system of clamps usedand should not be greater than 2.5 mm.

    3.2.4 The nominal bores 63 and 160 given in tables 1, 2 and 3correspond to practical diameters of 70 mm (or 65 mm) and153 mm respectively. 3.7 Outside diameter of bolted and rotatableflanges,3.3 Diameter of bolt holes, CThe values for the diameter of bolt holes, C, are derived fromthe bolt diameters, D, in accordance with IS0 273 - mediumseries.

    The dimensions given for the outside diameter are compatiblewith the requirement that the bolt washers (IS0 667 - smallseries) shall not project beyond the outer circumference of theflange.

    3.4 Bolt diameter, D 3.8 Number of bolt hates, n

    For a flange of given nominal bore, the bolt diameter, D, is thesame for both bolted and rotatable flanges.

    The linear sealing loads tabulated in annex A for a given boltstress are derived from the values of the number of boltholes, n.

    3.5 Mating face3.5.1 Definition

    The matinq face of the flange is the area in the form of a ring,the surface finish and-the flatness of which make the sealing ofthe joint possible.

    So as to take into account the diversity of the Clampingsystems which may be used, for example on collars withwelding necks, the maximum inner diameter of the annulusresewed for contact with the clamps is defined by diameter I/.

    (This annex forms an integral part of the standard.)

    The values given in table 4 have been calculated for each bolted flange under the foilowing conditions of use:cr is the resulting linear load, in newtons per millimetre, exerted on a unit length of anelastomer O-ring by the uniform tighteningof n bolts to a stress of 200 N/mm? the mean diameter of the sealing ring, before compression, being equal to (d, +d2) mm.
