conflicting trends

India• India known as the country of unity with diversity.• It is the land which accommodates 1,12,57,44,900

people of different backgrounds, speaking different languages, living in different life styles, following different religions.

• India hosts as many as 8 major religions, 18 major languages and 844 dialects , celebrates at least one festival per day.

• Culturally diverse, politically different, geographically apart, professionally distinct, financially different, surrounded by mountains and oceans from all sides yet the 112 crore people reside here with unity.

• Many cases show that the Indian society is a blend of many conflicting trends.

Secular with so many religions• UP Vs Maharashtra case – People originally from UP, Bihar

were forced to leave Maharashtra because some political party did not like it.

• Godhra case, Babri Masjid Issue - thousands were killed – Hindu Vs Muslim riots.

• Jobs and seats are made available to people belonging to a particular caste or ethnic background.

• In some places there is still discrimination based on caste and religion.

• But when it comes to work for a social cause, Indians work together – Gujarat earthquake, floods in Bengal, Kargil war.

• The same spirit is visible in the Mumbai Marathon. The cause is noble – No caste barrier, no religion – the common cause – Upliftment of needy and poor of India

Sati Vs Women Empowerment• India has produced females like Kalpana Chawala, Sunita

Williams, Indra Nooyi but also is a practices sati & dowry.• Female literacy is low yet these ladies have made India

proud.• Women empowerment has been on the national agenda

since years.A lot has been done like free education.• But still every city of India has a few dowry deaths per

month.• In rural India widows are forced to accept Sati.• Sati, dowry and women empowerment co exist in the

Indian society.

Respect Vs Humiliation• India is a country when people worship & respect the

female power - Laxmi, Durga, Kali. • Words fall short while describing the valor of Jijamata,

Rani Laxmi Bai, Sarojini Naydu. • But, female infanticide is still a part of the Indian

society.• But women trafficking, eve teasing,misbehavior, towards

women have left this image of respect in shambles. • The humiliation faced, the social abuse disregards the

rich culture of women worship in India.• Dr. Kiran Bedi case – denied promotion though was

more deserving.

• India is the leader in the BPO, KPO industry. • Plush infrastructure in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Gurgaon –

IT hubs.• Wifi, Internet, cafeterias,connected to 8 lane roads, air

conditioned buildings define the corporate urban India .• Assistance in problems related to water supply, electricity

supply, medical help are available at a phone call.• Villages in India – have no drinking water, they walk

down 20 km to collect drinking water for a day.• No proper roads, hygienic eating place, poor

transportation define the rural India. People die of diseases in want of proper medical help.

• There is 1 doctor for a few villages, no clean drinking water, 12-14 hours load shedding.

Technology at its best

Superstition Vs Space technology• Dr. Abdul Kalama- famously known the missile man of India.

• India is working on space research, missile technology.

• Indian origin astronauts – Kalpana Chawlan, Sunita Williams have walked in space and poor Indian villagers try to impress the “Rain God” by performing puja, yagna to shower them with rains.

• Indians are a jewels in the technology arena and the Indian society still has people who claim to predict & stop the evil through use of jewels & stones.

• India is well advancing in with technology where it also nurtures superstition to the level of sacrificing human live to satisfy God.

• God enter Human body, attack of the evil, Black magic still remain a part of the Indian society.

Inflation & income• Intel to invest $ 1 bn and West bridge too intends to invest

in Indian market.• Indian market is on a boom. Stock market is enjoying a

high it has never before.• The rich are becoming richer, and the poor poorer.• Inflation – 11.05%, petrol price rise by 5 rs/lit, LPG 50 rs/

cylinder.• 36 Indians among world's richest people totally a net

worth of around $90 billion of the top 14 who are in the top 100.

• India now has the largest number of billionaires among the 20 after the United States.

• 60 % of India still lives below the poverty line.

Rich Vs Poor• Punjab, Haryana are states with abundant of food grains,

irrigation facilities so that it helps them produce world class grains that are exported where places like Vidharb farmers are committing suicide because of no money, rains and grains to sustain family and repay the debts.

• Every year some places in India face the problem of malnutrition.

• Punjab is well irrigated and other parts of the country are dependent on rainfall for agriculture.

• Orrisa is the richest land in India but with the poorest people.

• Some having income less than 1 rupee per day.

Service to others!!• Mother Teresa, Baba Amte are idols of philanthropy.• They served the others without expecting to get anything in

return.• They sacrificed their lives for the cause of humanity. They

worked in India for India.• India is listed as one of the most corrupt countries of the world.• Corruption – working only for personal desires, personal gains,

without a thought to the trouble caused to the others.• Players play against their nations for money, politicians and

leaders join and support those who can win or help them win elections.

• Politicians assist in fulfilling basic needs till of weak sections of the society till elections through emotionally attracting them and converting them into a strong vote bank.

• Both work for others, but with different intentions behind them.

Violence in the Land of non violence • Land of Mahatma Gandhi, Lord Mahaveer ( Jainism) – India is

known as the Land of Non violence. They preached to live and let live, non violence is the way of life.

• The world follow it but in their own land, its Every day at least one news of murder, kidnapping, Atrocities against peaceful processions, appears in the newspaper, national new.

• Internal contract killings of workmen, contractors and engineers in Bihar, kidnapping of IT professionals and doctors.

• Kashmir, the most vulnerable point for violence.

• Murders in Mumbai are a daily story.

• Atrocities ( torture) by the police of those in custody.

• Though non violence took birth here but today remains just lip service.

• Still there are also people who follow non violence and preach so that others to follow them.

Diverse yet united• Natural diversity like floods, drought, heavy

rainfall and scarcity of water.

• Promoting tourism – Incredible India – involves the forest, deserts, rivers and forts and palaces yet also destroy heritage places due to ignorance or lack of attention.

• India celebrates most number of festivals than any other country of the world.
