Our Mission Our mission is to promote the preservation, conservation and improvement of natural resources and special places in Indian River County, Florida for the benefit of the general public and future generations.

Our Vision Our vision today and for the future:

– PROVIDE access for public recreation and education

Protected land provides important public benefits. Residents can learn about and enjoy our natural environment and local agricultural heritage, and they can take advantage of our protected waterways for boating, fishing and abundant marine life.

Dear Friends,

We are sure you agree that 2020 has been a most challenging and unprecedented

year. Despite all we have been going through, the past year has been full of

successes at the Indian River Land Trust. First and foremost, in early 2020, we were

able to acquire the highly visible Hoffmann property, below and north of the Barber

Bridge. This 65-acre acquisition is a keystone conservation property that we’ve had in

our sights for ten years.

In spring of 2020 we were able to complete the purchase of the three remaining

parcels along the Lagoon and within the Hoffmann property. These include the dock

you can see from the bridge. These important waterfront acquisitions allowed the

Land Trust to forever protect what is now a two-mile stretch and 300 acres in total

along the western Lagoon shoreline. We could not have completed these critical

purchases without your support.

While these transactions were taking place, IRLT was also solidifying its vision for our 220-acre Coastal Oaks Preserve to establish a state-of-the-art research and education facility.

A team of design professionals, working with Land Trust Board and staff members, completed schematic designs for the project which will be broken into different phases for

detailed design and construction, beginning with Phase 1 in 2021.

Our work to care for more than 1,200 acres and 12 miles of shoreline never ends. Our trails remained open even during Florida’s stay at home order so that our residents could get

outside and enjoy nature in a safe environment. Additionally, with the help of renewed partnerships with prominent research institutions and grants from resource management

agencies, we have been able to continue our efforts to replenish the Lagoon’s degraded shoreline and demonstrate the value of good land management to the Lagoon. This work

will undoubtedly help improve the water quality of the Lagoon in the future.

As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary, we hope you will remain as committed to the Land Trust as our Board and staff are in keeping our environment healthy and safe. You can be

sure that with your help we will continue to Protect the Land that Protects the Lagoon.

A Year in Review

Preserve ProtectThe Hoffman Property, once slated for commercial development, is now protected forever! This 66-acre bridge-view property was an essential piece of the conservation puzzle and we could not have purchased it without your help – thank you!

Salt marshes and wetlands are important ecosystems that our region has all but lost over the decades. Thanks to you, the Land Trust has protected and restored some rare exceptions. When we see these natural systems function as they should, we know that a host of species will benefit, not the least, our own.

With your support the Indian River Land Trust made big things happen. We continued to PRESERVE the lagoon shoreline, PROTECT its threatened habitats, and PROVIDE access to the lagoon for our community. More than ever, these protected lands are the very thing that have sustained our well-being.

Provide Looking Ahead . . .This past year has confirmed what we already knew – we need nature. The outdoors has always been a place of solace, escape and reflection, and during the isolation of the pandemic, we have become even more reliant on our conservation areas and trails. Your invaluable support helped us provide uninterrupted access for our whole community.

We are excited about the year ahead as we lay out a vision for a living laboratory among the ancient oak forests of the Coastal Oaks Preserve, finalize a new network of public trails at Oyster Bar Marsh, study the incredible diversity of fish species at Bee Gum Point and as soon as it is safe, resume our educational programs for all.

These projects will benefit generations to come and we thank you for your partnership and foresight.
