Award.
The Office Bearers and Members of the IPSWZB wishes all a Very Happy New year 2014
may all your dreams come true. May you be healthy, resourceful and dynamic in this year
and may you receive respect from your patients and reverence from your peers.
It is the dynamic and charismatic leadership under the Guidance of President, Dr Indira
Sharma; Hon General Secretary, Dr Asim Mullick; Treasurer, Dr Vinay Kumar; Vice
President, Dr Ashokan and Hon. Editor, Dr TSS Rao that set the agenda for this year 2013-
14.
The Members of the IPSWZB took up various challenges and activities in our zone . Some as
scheduled and several innovative beginnings for the betterment of Psychiatry and lives of
our patients in particular.
The IPS Western Zonal Branch (IPSWZB) comprises of the States of Gujarat, Maharashtra
and Goa. Each State than has local branches under its banner. Outlined below is the office
bearers and Sub-committee members of the IPSWZB and its constituent Local Branches.

The year 2013 started with the new team Lead by Dr Vivek Kirpekar, President; Dr P R P Kakode VP & President Elect; Dr Rajesh Dhume Hon Zonal Secretary , Dr Jayita Deodhar Hon Editor and Dr Jay P Shastri, Hon Treasurer took over the reins of the IPSWZB. Dr Kaushik Gupte IPP has been a guiding force behind this new committee all year around. Dr P R Pai Kakode took over the reins at the 44th Annual Conference IPSWZB at Goa in October 2013. The Sub-committee chairperson ship also saw a change at the end of the stipulated term. And we are deeply grateful to all office bearers and all other EC members and Chairpersons of Subcommittees for their contribution and sustained efforts to conduct the business of the zone. Our Central Representatives Dr Kaushik Gupte and Dr Kishore Gujar were awarded a letter of appreciation by Dr Asim Mallick for their services and dedication. Our Cent. Rep. Team attended all the National EC meeting and represented our zone to the best of their ability. We thanks them for their services and are truly proud of their leadership qualities.
Membership: The IPSWZB membership has grown from 1152 members to 1217 members
this year(Oct 12 to Aug13) is as LIFE FELLOW - 89 out of them 52 existing members

upgraded their status. FELLOW - 01; LIFE ORDINARY MEMBER - 51 out of them 01
existing member upgraded his/her status.; ORDINARY MEMBER - 05; LIFE ASSOCIATE
MEMBER – 04; ASSOCIATE MEMBER - 01. A TOTAL : 151 out of them 53 existing
members upgraded their status.
Condolences: Our Zone lost Dr Ravi Dusane Jalgaon died in a tragic vehicular accident, he
was an active member of the IPS Jalgaon Branch and astute clinician .Dr Kausar Abassi ,
Nagpur, Our Zonal EC member, a dear friend and a great organiser. Dr. Shitole from Pune,
was a senior Zonal Member and the PP of the IMA Pune Branch. Dr Shitole was a pillar of
support for the organisers of the last ANCIPS at Pune and a guiding light to all Psychiatric
activities in Pune. The Zone deeply condoles these untimely losses.
Important issues worked on in the Zone There were 4 EC. Meetings and 1 election Scrutiny meeting held during this year and
various matters of importance were discussed.
A Physical copy of the Zonal PAN card was obtained by the sustained effort of Dr Jay Shastri, putting end to various financial, Income Tax and bank relating issues in the Zone. The IPSWZB Journal the Archives of Psychiatry is being revamped, under the able guidance of Dr Jayita Deodhar. The Zonal journal has been plagued with funding and publications issues. Material for the journal from the earlier Editorial office took time to be made available. The revamped journal is publishes, we now have the April issue which will be posted to all WZB members. To feed the journal, which will be soon indexed on Pub-Med a Special research forum has been activated. Please visit the website and post your research. Also members are requested to send their cases/ research to The Hon. Editor. Our Zonal Website has been up and operational for about a year. The Website now hosts various sections and discussion forum. A Research and Case discussion forum is operational but with some tech glitches, which are being sorted out. This facility will help PG students and members to discuss their research papers and get guidance and mentoring from some of the best teachers of our zone. The Web based SMS Package of our zone has been operational and has been greatly appreciated by all members. The facility has improved member communications and information dissipation. New Awards were instituted in the Names of past Presidents of IPS. The latest being IPS Nagpur and Dr I K Mujawar Poster Session Award. Another new award was the Dr Govind Bang PG QUIZ Endowment award in the memory of Dr Govind Bang the past General Secretary of IPS. Dr Dattatreya Dhavale, Awards Chairperson did a stupendous job of drafting the new award rules, inspired from the IPS National awards. The Zone Appointed committees of representatives of all three states to standardise Posters and Free Paper presentation. The standardisation was required to bring in equality, depth, effectively and presentability of all research done and presented in the West-zone. So that members could achieve world class standards in presenting content both at conferences and international journals. The Team was lead by Dr Abhijit Nadkarni and Dr Neena Sawant and others.

The Zone Organises three main events for its members Mid-term CME; Annual Conference
and Post-Graduate CME exclusively for PG students. Here is a short report of these three
events in the zone.
MID-TERM CME IPSWZB 2013 23rd Mid Term CME was held at Hotel Pavillion Kolhapur on 22nd & 23rd June 2013. IPS Kolhapur Branch organised this very successful CME. Over 400 Delegates participated. The Theme was “Organic Psychiatry” and renowned speakers presented lectures. Dr T Murali held a workshop of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. Dr Ajit Bhide presented the differential diagnosis between Organic v/s Functional .Assessment of Delirium was aptly dealt with by Dr N M Patil. Dr Patankar lectured on Neuropsychiatric Adverse effects of Lithum. Dr Kausar Abassi did an excellent presentation of Role of Vitamins and their effects. In his flamboyant and jovial style Dr TSS Rao Presented the Neurobiology of Sex. Dr Charles Pinto & Dr Satish Khadilkar eloquently presented Dementias both early onset and Reversible. The CME ended with a debate of who should treat Dementia; Psychiatrist or Neurologist. All the Members present were delighted to have attended this CME and expressed that the CME was completely Clinic oriented and very helpful. Our Thanks to Dr Sudhir Bhave, Dr Sandesh patil and Dr vivek Kirpekar for the choice of topics and speakers. The Kolhapur CME was organised in a professional manner by the team Lead by Dr L. Nagarkar, Dr Sandesh Patil, Dr Simon Awale, Dr Padmaraj Patil and others.

44th Annual Conference IPSWZB 2013, Goa
44th Annual Conference IPSWZB Goa was held at NIO convention centre, Dona-Paula from
18th to 20th October 2013. Around 518 delegates and their families participated in the
conference. The Theme was “21st Century Psychiatry: Controversies and Challenges”. The
Conference was organised by IPS Goa State Branch by the Organising committee
comprising of Dr Peter Castelino, Dr Anil Rane, Dr Ashish Srivastava, Dr Abhijit Nadkarni, Dr
Veeranna Patil, Dr Wenona, Urvita Bhatia and others. Dr P R Pai Kakode, Dr Yvonne Pereira,
Dr Rajendra Hedge and Dr Rajesh Dhume were advisors for this conference.
A workshop on Sexuality and a Pre-conference CME on Prescribing Dilemmas in Special
population was held before the inaugural of the conference. The following was the

The Conference was inaugurated by Dr K E Raman, Director BITS PILANI Goa Campus. It was
indeed a delight for us in IPSWZB when central office bearers Dr Asim Mallick and Dr Vinay
Kumar visited us and participated in the Inaugural session. Dr Asim and Dr Vinay Kumar
felicitated the award winners of the conference.
Around 518 delegates participated in the conference and the topics were well appreciated
by all. The Dr A V Shah Award was won By Dr Devavrat Harshe and the IPS Nagpur Branch
and Dr I K Mujawar poster session Award was won by Dr. Gaurav Singh of Ahmedabad. The
PG Quiz was won by The Team from V S College Ahmedabad.
The Banquet was held at the picturesque International Centre, Dona Paula lawns with local
folk dances and entertainment program by delegates.

Preceding or during Any zonal activity we hold the Dr V N Bagadia Community psychiatry programs. Before the Conference we held three major programs in various cities of Goa. Speakers from our zone talked on various topics like Psychosis, Parenting and Held interactive sessions with general public. We received a stupendous response and appreciation from people of goa. Psychiatry, Government Medical College, Surat on 7th

The venue for the annual event was the Seminar hall. It was attended by 78 students
from Medical Colleges across the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa.

The first day commenced with Inauguration Ceremony and Lighting of Lamp
presided over by Dean, GMC, Surat, Dr. PR PaiKakode, Dr. Ritambhara Y. Mehta,
Dr. Kishore Gujar, Dr. Rajesh Dhume, Dr. Vivek Kirpekar, Dr. Ashish Srivastava, &
Dr. Kamlesh R. Dave.

After this, Session on Disturbance of mood was taken by Dr. Vivek Kirpekar & Dr.
Rajesh Dhume. It was an interactive session which concluded by the speakers
playing role of dummy patients and skills in MSE were fine tuned. The next session
was a Workshop on Critical Appraisal of a Paper was conducted by Dr. Abhijit
Nadkarni & Dr. Anil Rane. During the workshop students were divided into groups.
After group discussion, the students then gave their views on Articles circulated in
class. It included topics like statistical analysis, Methodology and Result
interpretation and identification of common errors in article writing.
Next a session on cognition was conducted by Dr. Bharat Panchal. Students were taught
about simple bed side tests to test cognition and mistakes made during the routine tests. The
last session of day was Recent advances in Psychiatry through MCQs by Dr. Ashish
Srivastava. All students unanimously participated and answered the MCQs with lot
of zeal and enthusiasm. Amongst them 2 students, who answered maximum number
of questions, Dr. Sanjivani Panigrahi and Dr. Vikas Dixit were selected for the exam
next day.
The second day commenced with a session on Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour
Therapy by Dr. Ritambhara Mehta. The basics of Cognitive therapy were discussed with
help of apt examples and situations.The next session was on Phenomenology of
disturbances of Thinking by Dr. Janhavi Kedare. It was also an interactive session.
The session concluded with role play by volunteers on common psychiatric

disorders. Dr. G.K. Vankar took a session on Disturbances of perception. The
speaker himself acted as a dummy patient with perceptual disturbances and
discussed evaluative techniques and mistakes while evaluating perceptual
disturbances. The day concluded with Mock exam. The selected students were
assigned one case each for discussion. After presentation Dr. G.K. Vankar, Dr.
Janhavi Kedare and Dr. Bharat Panchal acted as examiners. The students were told about
answering techniques, details commonly missed in history, new topics and expectations of
the examiners.

IPS Nashik Branch IPS Nasik branch organized various activities for creating awareness reg mental illnesses.
Members like Dr.Sule, Dr.Dhake, Nagapurkar delivered lectures, written articles in
newspapers & participated in workshops.
On world schizophrenia day, we organized film show & talk by Dr.Mohan Agashe. On the
occasion of world mental health day, Psychologist from NAir Hospital,Mumbai delivered a
talk on "HA KHEL BHAVANANCHA". Medical college at Adgaon, Nasik also organized
awareness program on Mental illnesses in which our members delivered lectures & PG
students did a wonderful role play.

The Office Bearer of IPS Dr Asim Mallick and Dr Vinay Kumar personally carried with them
the Hon Fellowship Certificate and Shawl to The Goa IPSWZB Conference. Senior Nashik
Branch members Dr Shirish Sule, Dr BSV Prasad and Dr Umesh Nagapurkar handed over the
felicitations to Dr Jamkar VC MUHS on 30-10-2013 at his premises. Dr Jamkar conveyed his
gratitude to the Members of the IPS and thansked them for this unique honour.

New Team comprising of Dr Durga Bang as President (2013-14), Dr Abhishek Somani as
secretary (2013-15) and Dr Praveer Waradkar as Vice President (2013-14) and President
Elect (2014-15) was installed in a simple ceremony at hands of Dr Dilip Gode, Vice
chancellor, DMIMS, Sawangi-Wardha.

New vistas in managing depression Opipramol-the sigma mystery Ketamine-focus on NMDA MoC duties were conducted by Dr Sagar Chiddarwar. 57 psychiatrists and PG students were present during the CME and were much appreciative of the program. ------xxx----- 06 October 2013 On Occasion of World Mental Health Week, a major CME was planned in conjunction with Indian Medical Association, Nagpur branch. Invitations were sent to more than 2000 IMA

members. The topic for the CME was “Managing Addictions in Clinical Practice”. Maharashtra Medical Council granted 2 credit hours for this CME. Psycho-Social activities
Drama In view of a tradition every year, Nagpur branch of IPS organized a drama on 06 Oct 13 evening 6:30 pm at J.R. Shaw Auditorium . The title of the drama this year was “...Aani Raje Jinkle”( And the KING Won). The story was written and directed by Dr Sushil Gawande with active and enthusiastic participation of members of the society. The drama was well received with over 500 members in the audience.

IPS Gujarat State Branch Report 2013
State conference annual was held at Venue: Ranakpur from dates 23 to 25 august 2013.
It’s a famous rainy season hill resort in the Aravali hills. It is a picturesque hill spot in
the rains. There were more than 50 Registrations and attended by psychiatrists across
the state.
There was a treatment – psychopharmacology MCQ workshop – conducted by Dr RC
Maniar which became very popular and went beyond the schedule 2 hrs to > 3hrs. it
was well appreciated by all. There was oration by Dr Lalit Vaya and Dr Ajay chauhan
talked about forensic issues in his presidential address. Inauguration and installation of
the president was an emotional moment.
PG Quiz was a trying time for PGs AND well enjoyed by the consultants, with clinic
based practical questions. Selected 2 teams went on to participate in the west zone.
Surat and Bhavnagar PG teams represented state.
AGBM on 25/08/2013 was held at conference venue at ranakpur, it was attended by 45
members. Issues related to academic activity, PG & UG QUIZ were discussed, secretary,
treasurer report was read.
Two Newsletters of the GSB IPS were released. Various proposals were discussed
related to initiating award sessions

Venue: AUDITORIUM SBKS MIRC, SV
The CME program was organized by Department of Psychiatry SBKS MIRC SV and IPS-GSB at the college auditorium on 22nd of September 2013 from 8.30am to 2 pm. The CME was on topic of “DSM-5” and 80 delegates attended it from all over Gujarat. The delegates were faculties from various other colleges as well as private practice professionals and psychiatry residents. The speakers were Dr. Vihang Vahia and Dr. Vidhyadar Vatwe.
The program was inaugurated by introduction of the speakers and the chairpersons for the CME from IPS-GSB. A prayer then followed it. Then the CME was started with the first lecture by Dr. Vihang Vahia on “DSM 5 – An Overview”. The second lecture was by Dr Vidyadhar Watve on “Diagnostic Role Play for DSM 5”
The CME was very interactive and informative and all the delegates gave their inputs towards additions/deletions with their evidence for the same. A healthy discussion was held at the end of the lectures.

Psychiatry dept and the final year students conducted an anti-ragging sensitization
program for the for 1 MBBS 200 STUDENTS with the help of dean dr vikas sinha,
wardens, faculty of 1st prof and psychiatry and psm depts. How to help a person in
distress was discussed. What is and not Ragging was demonstrated in plays scripted
and acted by final year students. Psychiatry professor
Psychiatry dept at Jamnagar conducted anti-suicide programme for 1 MBBS 200
STUDENTS with the help of dean dr vikas sinha, wardens, faculty of 1st prof and
psychiatry and psm depts. How to help a person in distress was discussed. Relaxation
technique of self hypnosis was practiced by all.
Similar anti suicide programs were conducted for nursing school and the
physiotherapy schools in Jamnagar.
Dementia awareness program was conducted for nursing school where lecture were
conducted by PG AND questions were answered by the SR.
Bhavnagar medical college conducted anti-dementia awareness drive and suicide
prevention day program for nursing and medical students.

Indian Psychiatric Society, Goa State Branch
Annual Report 2013 Ours is probably the smallest state branch in the country but never the less its members are very proactive. The branch has a total membership of 74 which includes associate members. The branch conducts various activities round the year with the main objective of academic furtherance of its members and community engagement on matters related to mental health. Our partners include: • Sangath Society, NGO working in mental health and research • COOJ, NGO working in rehabilitation of mentally ill • Sethu, NGO working with children and adolescent • Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour, tertiary care teaching hospital • Goa Medical College • Diocesan Society Some salient points: Two of our members are at the helm of affairs at the Zonal Branch with Dr P R P Kakode as President and Dr Rajesh Dhume as the Secretary. Other members hold different offices at the zone level. We successfully organised the 44th Annual Conference of the IPS Western Zonal Branch this year. We also organised the second state level conference in the month of June 2013. In all CME programs worth 23 credit points were organised by the branch. A number of community activities were conducted especially I the field of alcohol and suicide prevention. Our members attended various CME and conferences of the IPS as well as presented papers and lectures. Details of the branch activities with photographs are as follows: Research Training program: We have conducted a six month modular program on Research methodologies for our members which concluded in January this year. A number of members, especially trainee psychiatrist benefited from this program. As a direct outcome of this training a number of research papers were presented at the ANCIPS, Bangalore this year.

World Mental Health Day celebration Distributed pamphlets during the Mental health week at various hospitals to create awareness about mental health. We designed the pamphlets to cover basic mental health issues.
Successfully organised the 44th Annual Conference of the IPS Western Zonal Branch, 18th -20th October 2013, NIO Auditorium, Dona Paula, Goa. The theme this year
was: ‘21st Century Psychiatry: Challenges and Controversies”. The Conference was well attended by 518 delegates from across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa. A diverse range of topics were addressed by the faculty which included: Dr Raj Brahmabhat, Dr Yvonne Pereira, Dr Prabha Chandra, Dr Vishwamohan Thakur, Dr Anup Dhar, Dr Pratap Tharayan, Dr Ashish Deshpande, Sunila DIngankar, Dr A K Kala, Dr Sobha Srinath.
