With its tropical forests and extreme climatic cong.itions, India provides suitable climatic conditions for the growth of biological resources which is reflected in the abundant availability and diversity of such resources, especially plant-based resources.

Today, major companies throughout the world are making considerable investments in the stuc\y:, identification, extraction, isolation of active materials from plant sources and in improving and establishing effective uses of known properties and finding newer uses of the known compounds and development of new compounds and extraction of fractions from this source. The case of "Neem" is a pointer in this direction. All these efforts would be reflected in generation of a number of patents in this area in the years to come.

This paper makes a brief analysis of patenting activity relating to materials from plant sources based on the patents published in India during the period 1 April 1972 to 28 February 1995 and also provides bibliographic details about these patents for the benefit of readers. It should be noted that in order to obtain a patent, the invention must be novel, should involve an inventive step and should be capable of industrial application. "Novel" means that an invention must contribute something over and above what is already known in the art while "inventive step" means the invention should not be obvious to a person skilled in the art and "industrial application" means that the invention can be put into practice for industrial production.

Of a total of 104 patents published during the period 1972-1995, 101 are for the inventions relating to materials from the plant sources, nearly all the patents except 3 relate to medicinal group for the processes for extraction and isolation of extracts, compounds and application of plant materials. Nearly 72% of the patents are filed mainly by Indians while the remaining 28% are filed by the foreign firms. CSIR accounts for nearly 35% ofthe total patents and is the major contributor with 36 patents out of 72 patents published by India. Amongst the foreign patentees, major contribution is from the industry. There are 14 patents on 'Neem', out of which 12 are by India and two by foreign patentee .

METHOD AND INSTALLATION FOR THE EXTRACTION OF NATURAL FLAVOUR OF PLANT PRODUCTS

A method for the extraction of natural flavours of plant origin in particular, fruits vegetables, seeds or aromatic plants wherein organoleptic properties are retained characterised in that the plant products are reduced to a fine slurry containing the flavour and the pectins, to said slurry a solvent such as herein defined is added, which, when heated, forms with water a heterogeneous and azeotropic mixture having a boiling point below the stability limit temperature of the principal essences constituting the flavour, the slurry is heated in a reactorat the boiling point of the azeotropic mixture, the vapours are condensed in a separate vessel, the condensate obtained is decanted so as to separate the water and the solvent, said solvent recycled to the reactor, -the distillation is stopped at the moment when the temperature in the reactor suddenly rises and becomes clearly higher than the boiling point of the azeotropic mixture, the mixture remaining in the reactor is then filtered in order to separate the solid matter from the solvent containing the flavour, and the flavour is isolated from the solvent by any appropriate method, and, if desired, the solid matter derived from the foregoing extraction is subjected to further extraction with same solvents as for initial extraction or other solvents, such as herein defined which form azeotropic but homogeneous mixture with water e.g., (a) alCohols, such as ethanol, isopropanol or isobutanol, (b)ketones, such as methyl-ethyl ketone, methylisopropyl ketone.
