“Ravi Shankar is the Godfather of the World Music.”-George HarrisonRavi Shankar, the legendary sitarist and composer is India’s most esteemed musical Ambassador. Ravi Shankarhad an interesting childhood. He was born on April 7, 1920 in Benares into a Bengali Brahmin community. Since childhood he played a number of instruments and even sang in school functions.Paris had a very strong influence on his mind. He continued his education in Paris. On one hand he was exposed to Indian music and of equal importance was his knowledge of Western ways. This made him a master in the world of music.

It was in 1938 that he moved back to India to begin his formal training.He introduced himself to Ustaad Allauddin Khan, affectionately knownas Baba.He also continued to travel back and forth between India and the West.1966 was an important year for him.  It was during this time that George Harrison of the Beatles became his student.

He has won many awards including the Bharat Ratna, several Grammy awards, numerous honorary Doctorates.But his life wasn’t easy. His mother died when he was very young. There was the failed first marriage to Annapurna Devi, and the

premature death of his son.  He is presently married to Sukanya, and their daughter Anoushka Shankar, is a respected sitarist in her own right.  One other daughter who has made a very big name for herself is the Nora Jones, the famous singer.

ZAKIR HUSSAINThe exponent who got tabla to centre stage was born on 9 March 1951.

He was born in Mumbai to well known tabla player Ustaad Alla Rakha

in India and is a graduate from St. Xavier's, Mumbai.

Zakir Hussain was a child prodigy and was touring by the age of twelve.

Zakir Hussain has performed throughout the world as a soloist . He

has completed courses in Chinese, African and Indonesian music

at the University of Washington in Seattle and since has been active

in fusion of music from several countries, particularly drums and

percussion.

He married Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher.

He was awarded the titles of Padma Bhushan in 2002 and

Padma Shri in 1988.He became the youngest percussionist

to be awarded these by the Indian Government.

On 8th February 2009, he won the Grammy Award in the

Contemporary World Music Album.

M.S.SUBBULAKSHMI Madurai Shanmukhavadivu (M.S) Subbulakshmi, the nightingale of Carnatic music was born in  Madurai, Tamil Nadu on September  16, 1916 to noted Veena player Shanmukhavadivu and lawyer Subramania Iyer.Young Kunchamma as she was called and her siblings was brought up in a musical environment. Her mother used to play violin and rehearse constantly and Kunchamma used to listen and hum

ragas along with the Veena and the Nadaswaram recitals frequently heard from the temple. Her first Guru was Madurai Srinivasa Iyengar.She did her formal schooling only till class 5th and music became the world for her. She also learned Hindustani music from Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas for a short while. Her first recording was at the age of ten, when she recorded a couple of songs.

In 1940 she married Thiagaraja Sadasivam, a well known figure in the Madras Congress circle, at Thiruneermalai.Subbalakshmi has been the recipient of the highest awards and honors the nation could bestow upon an artist and signification.She has earned doctorates from famed universities and her divine voice has earned acclaim from big and famous personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and many more. In 1998, she was the first musician to receive the highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' from the President of India. Padma Bhushan(1954), Padma Vibhushan(1975), Ramon Magsaysay award (1974) are some of the major awards she has received.  

She remains the simple, neat, devout, down to earth person she always was and having a genuine interest in others. She passed away at the age of 88.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is a highly acclaimed Indian sarod player and composer was born on March 21 1946. Khan was born to Hafiz Ali Khan, is the sixth-generation

sarod player in his family. His forefathers came from

Afghanistan to India and brought the Rabab which later developed

into Sarod.He was taught by his father Hafiz Ali Khan, a musician

to

the royal family of Gwalior.

Khan is married to Subbulakshmi and has two sons Ayaan Amaan are already set to carry their Father's legacy to the next generation of Hindustani Music and Sarod.He was awarded India's second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan in 2001. And he was awarded the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize in 2004. On April 8, 2007, he got international recognition too. He was honoured with the Key to the City award by Kathy Taylor Mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma state, for his long-standing contribution to the Indian Classical Music..

SHANKAR EHSAAN LOY

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (S-E-L) is an acclaimed Indian musical trio consisting of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa.Each member of this trio brings his own unique talents and experiences to the group.Together they combine the Carnatic and Hindustani vocal tradition (Shankar), Western Rock (Ehsaan) and a deep understanding of fusion over the Electronic Synthesizer (Loy).
