About the competition

The ICI-IITM National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) 2015 is the first national level competition to be held at IIT Madras in which students from various universities of all over India make their own canoe, row them and compete. It is a nine month long project in which students perform structural and stability design and study on various materials to build light weight and high strength concrete and build two-seater canoe. They also get exposure to tools in construction project management and an opportunity to develop leadership skills. Each team has to submit two interim reports before submitting the final report. Among the 35 registered teams (each with 12 students) from 9 states, the best 15 teams will be participating in the canoe race. Each team will design and fabricate the concrete canoe at their home institution and transport them to IIT Madras for the final competition/canoe racing during August 21-23, 2015. The competition/racing will be held at the towing tank (82 x 3.2 x 2.8 m), which is a unique facility in IIT Madras. Also, exhibition of canoes, racing and academic/industrial lectures, etc. are planned during the event.

The Indian Concrete Institute, founded in 1982, is the premier organisation for concrete technologists, with captains of industry, cement manufacturers, leading consultants, academicians, educational institutions and research scientists as members. Its major objectives are: spread of good construction practices amongst engineers & trade organisations, conduct conferences, workshops, seminars and training programs periodically. The ICI encourages and helps in nurturing the next generation concrete technologists through various student chapter activities. Also, it supports in conducting various national level student festivals such as ICI-FESTs and now, the ICI-IITM National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) in association with IIT Madras.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. The institute has 16 academic departments and several advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering and pure science. The Department of Civil Engineering has 52 faculty members and about 1000 students and is arguably the best of its kind in the country. The Civil Engineering Association (CEA) conducts various programs aiming at the professional development of the students. The Department of Ocean Engineering is one among the best of its kind in the country.
