UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) is a device that is used for providing backup power when the main input
power fails. It is the main component of power protection architecture. A UPS is typically used to protect
hardware such as computers, data centers, telecommunication equipment or other electrical equipment, where
unexpected power disruption causes harm to the equipment, leading to serious business disruption or data
loss.
UPS systems are widely used in residential sectors, hospitals, data centers, manufacturing units, banks,
financial institutions, etc. UPS are used to provide constant power to avoid loss of any kind.
Generally, UPS system can be categories into the following types :
UPS System
Offline UPS Online UPSLine Interactive
UPS
OFFLINE UPS: consists of a AC/DC & DC/AC inverter with a
battery, switch, low pass filter and a surge suppressor. It is also
called standby UPS. The system becomes operational by setting
AC input as a primary source. Inverter remain in standby and
becomes active only when power fails, and transfer switch
transfer electrical load to the backup unit. Its main advantages
are small size, low cost, high efficiency, and are majorly used in
desktop computers.

ONLINE UPS: consist of a combination of double conversion power circuit and an inverter. They are used to
provide continuous power supply to equipment. During load shed or blackouts, supply is automatically switched
to battery mode without any delay. When the power comes back, batteries starts charging. Benefits of using
online ups are that it provides highest level of protection from all types of power problems such as, high voltage
surges, frequency variation, etc. It is mainly used in offices, banks, etc.
LINE INTERACTIVE UPS: Battery of AC power converter is connected to the output of UPS. Battery is charged
when input AC power is normal. When main power supply is off, then the transfer switch allow the power to flow
from battery to the UPS output. These are generally available in 0.5-5kva range. Advantages of using line
interactive UPS are high efficiency, small size, low cost and high reliability, and ability to correct low or high line
voltage. It is mainly used in small business, web and departmental servers.
UPS can be divided into different segments based on kVA rating:

UPS Market in India to Reach $1.2 Billion by 2021
According to a recently published TechSci Research report “India UPS Market By Application Sector, BykVA, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 - 2021”, the market for UPS systems in India isprojected to reach $1.2 billion by 2021. On account of growing demand for continuous power andprotecting equipment from voltage fluctuations, UPS systems are witnessing rising adoption by differentend users ranging from residential households, small offices to large business enterprises. Moreover, expanding commercial and industrial sectors such as IT/ITES, BFSI, healthcare, retail, educational andresearch institutes, telecommunication, textile industry, etc., are further fueling demand for UPS in thecountry.
India UPS market was dominated by IT/ITeS sector in 2015, and the sector is forecast to continue itsdominance in the coming years, owing to increasing number of Government of India initiatives to make thecountry an IT hub. IT market in India grew significantly over the past few years, and garnered totalrevenues of around $138.8 billion in 2015, consequently driving UPS over the last few years. South Indiaaccounted for the lion’s share in the country’s UPS market in 2015. However, North India is expected togrow at a faster pace in the coming years on account of rising IT/ITes and BFSI sectors in the region.
“India, as an economy, is undergoing a major transformation. Rising number of government initiatives tosupport development in IT/ITES, BFSI, education, healthcare, retail and residential sectors in the country isexpected to have a positive impact on the country’s UPS market in the coming years. Growing demand forcontinuous power supply even in Tier II and Tier III cities, coupled with major government initiatives suchas, “Make in India” and “Digital India”, are anticipated to drive India UPS market during the forecastperiod.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based globalmanagement consulting firm.
