INDIA: SPLENDORS OF THE SOUTH
February 28-March 15, 2018
Dear Penn Alumni and Friends,
Join alumni, friends, and Penn faculty host Thomas Max Safley, Professor of Early Modern European History, on a special 16-day journey throughout Southern India. Together you will visit places steeped in history, art, and architecture.
Your journey starts in India’s “entertainment capital,” Mumbai, situated on India’s west coast. Here you’ll visit the revered Mani Bhawan, Mahatma Gandhi’s headquarters, and tour the acclaimed Prince of Wales Museum. Traveling south to Mysore, stop first in the key cultural town of Srirangapatna, then visit Mysore Palace. Continue on to Coorg and tour the coffee plantation at Orange County Resort, where you stay. Then it’s on to Kabini and Nagarhole National Park, where you enjoy boat and vehicle safaris in search of wildlife. A leisurely Kerala houseboat cruise through the canals of the Arabian Sea showcases Indian life up close. The tour concludes in Kochi, where you attend a colorful Kathakali dance performance. This departure also offers a 5-day/4-night pre-tour option in Delhi and Agra, and a 5-day/4-night post-tour extension in Sri Lanka.
This air-inclusive small group tour is limited to only 24 Penn alumni and friends. We encourage you to register today to guarantee your place on this trip of a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Emilie C. K. LaRosa Assistant Director, Alumni Education & Alumni Travel

Faculty LecturerThomas Max Safley is Professor of Early Modern European History. A specialist in the eco-nomic and social history of early modern Europe, he has pub-lished extensively on the history of marriage and the family, of
poverty and charity, and of labor and business. He is currently working on the economic and social history of failure, especially bankruptcy among merchant-bankers in early modern Europe. Safley is a regular Penn Alumni Travel host, having traveled with alumni to Turkey, the Netherlands, Eastern Europe, Sicily, Morocco, and Spain. Given that so many of the merchants he has studied had intense commercial connections to South Asia, he has long wished to travel to India to further explore these connections. At the University of Pennsylvania, Professor Safley teaches the intro-ductory survey of European history and advanced lecture courses on the Reformation, the Baroque, pre-industrial economic history, and the early modern period.
