Brazil: BASF – chrome pigments Amplifying on the news item in ‘Focus on Pigments’, Feb 2002, 4, ‘QL’ reports that the closure of BASF’s lead chromate pigments plant at Sao Caetano do Sul (in Sao Paulo province) will result in the loss of 94 jobs. In future, Latin American customers’ requirements for lead chromate pigments will be met from BASF’s German facilities. Quimica Latinoamericana, Mar 2002, 4 (1), 8 (in Spanish) China: CSRC – carbon black China Synthetic Rubber Corp (CSRC) has completed arrangements for funding the expansion of its carbon black plant at Maanshan (Anhui province). The International Finance Corp (IFC) is to provide CSRC with an $11 M loan. A further $5 M will be made available by the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China. CSRC will now go ahead with its project to increase carbon black capacity from 35,000 tonnes/y to 60,000 tonnes/y. European Chemical News, 11 Feb 2002, 76 (1992), 30 China: Inabata – plastics colorants Inabata (of Japan) has formed a joint venture company with local Chinese partners, with the aim of establishing a 3600 tonnes/y plant at Dalian for making coloured plastic compounds. The plant should be ready for commissioning in the autumn of 2002. The operating company will be Inabata Industry & Trade (Dalian FTZ) Co. The addition of this plant to existing facilities in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will bring to 124,800 tonnes/y the total Asian coloured plastic compounds capacity under Inabata’s control. Japan Chemical Week, 7 Feb 2002, 43 (2158), 5 China: Taiyuan Chemical – CaCO 3 Taiyuan Chemical Industrial Co Ltd is to build a 20,000 tonnes/y nanoparticulate calcium carbonate plant at Taiyuan (in the northern province of Shanxi) employing technology supplied by Cimprogetti of Italy. The new plant will be sited within the major complex at Taiyuan where Taiyuan Chemical already produces up to 310,000 tonnes/y of ammonium nitrate; 20,000 tonnes/y of chlorobenzene; 60,000 tonnes/y of refined methanol; 70,000 tonnes/y of caustic soda; 5000 tonnes/y of methylamine; and 25,000 tonnes/y of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Together with other new plants, the Taiyuan facility should help to alleviate the rising tide of imports. Last year, China imported about 100,000 tonnes/y of nanoparticulate calcium carbonate. China Chemical Reporter, 26 Mar 2002, 13 (9), 9 China: Tomoe – plastics colorants Tomoe Engineering has installed a new 2000 tonnes/y plastic colouring and compounding facility at Shenzhen, which it intends to have running at full-scale capacity by Apr 2002. Japan Chemical Week, 14 Feb 2002, 43 (2159), 4 India: Saraf, Idcol, Technokhim & NPF Pigment – TiO 2 feedstock & pigment Two Russian firms – Technokhim Holdings and NPF Pigment – have signed an agreement with Saraf Agencies (of Kolkata, India) for a major pigments venture in the province of Orissa. Total investment in the venture will be around Rup 10 bn (equivalent to $205 M). Plans have been drawn up to establish a 50,000 tonnes/y TiO 2 pigment plant, a 5000 tonnes/y iron oxide pigment plant and a 130,000 tonnes/y triple superphosphate plant. Presumably the TiO 2 plant will employ sulfate- route technology and presumably a sulfuric acid unit will be incorporated into the project, serving the requirements of both the TiO 2 plant and the phosphate fertiliser plant. The Industrial Development Corp of Orissa (Idcol) is likely to seek a 26% shareholding in the chemical complex. Earlier, Idcol had approved a memorandum of understanding with Saraf on its mineral sands project. This project envisages investing Rup 2 bn (equivalent to just over $40 M) in developing a mining operation on the coast near Gopalpur in the Ganjam district bordering the Bay of Bengal. The deposit under scrutiny lies between Rushikulya Mouth in the south and Chilika Mouth in the north. It is said to contain 19 M tonnes of heavy minerals, including 6 M tonnes of ilmenite. Saraf plans to produce 250,000 tonnes/y of ilmenite, of which about one-half would be used captively for TiO 2 pigment manufacture, while the other 125,000 tonnes/y would be available for export to the Ukraine, South Korea and other markets. Chemical Weekly, 19 Mar 2002, 47 (30), 104 Japan & Thailand: Tokai – carbon black Tokai Carbon had announced towards the end of last year that it would be scaling back capacity at its Wakamatsu carbon black plant from 54,000 tonnes/y to 36,000 tonnes/y. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Dec 2001, 5). Following a reassessment of the market outlook, the company has now decided to close its Wakamatsu plant altogether. Meanwhile, the project for a 10% expansion at Tokai’s Sriracha plant in Thailand is nearing completion, bringing capacity there to 66,000 tonnes/y.
