► Progress: India is making a steady progress on its healthcare Millennium Development Goals. India has met a few goals related to eradicating extreme poverty, empowering women, and combating HIV/AIDS

Key Takeaways

► Drivers: India’s progress is driven by a steady rise in nation's income levels. The gap between India and rest of the world's life expectancy at birth has reduced. India's mortality rates reduced as incomes rose

► Gaps: India still needs to address basic issues impacting healthcare. While India’s access to water sources has improved, a wide gap still exists in India's sanitation facilities

► Health spending: India spends small portion of its GDP on its healthcare needs. And Indians have to shell out substantial amounts from their pockets on healthcare

► Way Forward: Health insurance reforms are necessary to curb citizen's out-of-pocket burden. Greater investments are required to improve health delivery systems and increase the availability of physicians
