Chiller: A chiller is a machine which removes heat through
a liquid via absorption refrigeration cycle or vapor-
compression. The liquid further can be circulated with the
help of a heat exchanger to cool the surroundings. In air
conditioning systems, the chilled water is distributed to
coils or heat exchangers in air handling units or another
type of terminal devices, such as fan coil units and variable
air volume, which further cool the air in respective
space(s). The water used is then re-circulated back in the
chiller to be cooled again.
Ductable Splits: Ductable splits are one in which the
cooling effect runs in the ducts from inside the cooling
unit to different locations via outlet. Ductable splits are
commonly used in shopping malls for mass cooling.
Some of the other major application areas ductable
splits are banks, offices, entertainment centers,
departmental stores, restaurant, multiplexes, fast food
centers, computer rooms, residences, telephone
exchanges, auditoriums, hospitals, theatres, conference
halls, control rooms and factories.

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF): It is an HVAC
technology invented by Daikin, a Japan based company,
in 1982. Like ductless minisplits, VRFs use refrigerant as
the cooling and heating medium. They are mainly used
in big shopping complexes, malls, office buildings, etc.
VRF uses refrigerant as the cooling/heating medium, and
allows one outdoor condensing unit to be connected to
multiple indoor evaporators, each individually
controllable by the user. VRFs can be compared with
chillers as they both provide centralized cooling.
Light Commercial Air Conditioners: High Wall
Splits, Cassettes, Window, and Concealed Ductable
Splits are some of the types of light commercial air
conditioners. Split air conditioner consists of two
parts – Indoor Unit and Outdoor Unit. The outdoor
unit should be located in the open space. The unit
houses condenser coil, compressor and capillary
tubing or expansion coil. The indoor unit is located
inside the room, and it contains long blower, cooling
coil and an air filter.
Window air conditioners are the most commonly
used and the cheapest type of air conditioners.
Cassette air conditioner are ceiling/suspended air
conditioners, and are used where space is limited.

Respondents were asked about the current and the future growth rates, market share by end user, by region
as well as by product type, across various end use segments. Removing the outlier responses, geometric mean
of growth estimates and product wise revenue shares generated across various applications was taken, to
arrive at the final revenue shares. Revenue shares generated across various application areas were further
triangulated from dealers, contractors/installers and project dealers, depending on usage of various products.
Manufacturers and suppliers were asked about average selling prices of various types of air conditioners of their
respective companies.
Final average selling price for air conditioners was deduced by taking weighted average, which was calculated
by taking into account their revenue contribution in the overall market and average selling price of various
products. During the process, sales of best selling models of air conditioners sold by the various suppliers and
manufacturers were also taken into consideration.
Methodology Followed for Calculation of Market Shares:
Market share by application, by product type, by region and by company was calculated based on the
responses received through primary surveys with industry experts, in which respondents were asked about
market share or revenue generated from various end use segments. The final data was calculated by taking
geometric mean of responses gathered from more than 100 key opinion leaders, after eliminating the outliers.

India Air Conditioners Market to Cross US$ 6 Billion by 2021
Increasing urbanisation, growing purchasing power and changing climatic conditions to drive India air conditioners marketthrough 2021
According to TechSci Research report, “India Air Conditioners Market By Product Type, By End Use Sector, By TonnageCapacity, By Top City Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2011–2021”, the air conditioners market in India is anticipated tocross US$ 6 Billion by the end of 2021, On account of extreme climatic conditions, rising disposable income, growingconstruction activities in both commercial and residential sectors, coupled with various government initiatives aimed atimproving energy efficiency. Moreover, implementation of energy efficiency labelling system and standardization for airconditioners is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s air conditioners market in the coming years.
Air conditioners market of any country across the globe is primarily dependent on the construction and infrastructure sectors.During April 2000 – March 2016, around USD24.19 billion were invested for the development of construction industry in India. Moreover, the Government of India allocated around USD1 trillion for the infrastructural development of the country. Hence, backed by booming construction sector and growing infrastructural development, the market of air conditioners in the countryis expected to register healthy growth rate during 2016-2021.
South region is the highest demand generators for air conditioners in the country, and its dominance is expected to continueduring 2016 – 2021 as well. South region comprises of cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai, which are considered as the ITHubs of the country, are developing, and the demand for air conditioners is increasing from these areas. In 2015, lightcommercial air conditioners dominated the India air conditioners market, followed by Chillers, VRF and Ductable Splits.
“Growing air conditioners market in India resulted in high energy demand, increasing electricity bills and environmentdegradation, which has ultimately resulted in increasing demand for environmental friendly technologies. India aims to reduceits power consumption from air conditioning segment by the implementation of “Energy Star Ratings” for air conditioners. Withthe introduction of HFC-32 and HC-290 room air conditioners, India is taking several measures to reduce its emissions inatmosphere, and the country’s government proposed a HCFC phase-out management plan. Hence, the demand forenvironment friendly air conditioners is expected to grow at a robust pace over the next five years.” said Mr. Karan Chechi,Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based global management consulting firm.
