My reply was ‘Yes you have the correct email address, and yes Veronica and Iremember you and your mum. She was indeed a member of the Lamb of God and hercommitment to Christ did change her life and was an inspiration to many. You can beproud of her and be assured of her salvation in the Lord. And so can you hold hope intothe future for your eternal destiny. Take a close look and think about the Gospel of JohnChapter 6:37, which says ‘All those the Father gives me will come to me, andwhoever comes to me I will never drive away’ – that talks of you. I was delighted toget your email and I admire your determination toright wrongs. I had forgotten the incident but clearlythe Lord has reminded you. You can be assured thatI forgive you. We are still at the same address inLake Terrace Road so if ever you are down southplease feel free to give me an advance email and wewould be delighted to see you. You take care and Ipray the Lord will richly bless you as you journey withHim. Peace in the Lord. Roger and Veronica.

He has since replied and is coming south in about two months.

I get wonderfully encouraged with things like this because it demonstrates and remindsme that God is constantly at work, and that his ways are so different to mine. At times Imight think ‘well the gathering didn’t go so well today’ or ‘we had a number of peopleaway today and that disappoints me- did you notice I hardly miss a meeting Lord?’ Or attimes I might feel a bit disconnected to the joy around me at some meetings. But as mydear wife Veronica has constantly reminded over the years of our marriage: ‘thank Godyou’re not God, Roger…’ SO TRUE!

OUR PEOPLE…

Congratulations! Well done Oliver Lyons [Christchurch] playing football in a recent 9th grade

tournament. There were 24 teams and his club Parkland won the tournament, fantastic, but it was apparently a bit stressful watching some of the games! Theywon all their games but the semi-final was against a team that hadn’t lost a gameall season and were playing in the 10th grade competition. It came down to a nail-biting penalty shootout which Oliver’s team won. One of the amazing things aboutOliver’s team is they are players picked from four teams and they had only onepractice together and the tournament was the first time they had played togetheras a team! Awesome- well played both teams.

With sadness, yet confidence in the Lord, we remember:• Ian and Para Hamilton [Christchurch] as Ian’s son has passed to the Lord

[Note to all Branch leaders: Please send your local news/snippets to Roger Foleyor Tom Caballes so that we can acknowledge important occasions in the lives ofour brothers and sisters and make sure we do not miss any of them.]

NEWS AND ARTICLES

THE PRIVILEGE OF VISITING THE COMMUNITIES IN MALAYSIAVeronica and I visited the Covenantedfor Christ Community branches inPenang and Taiping in August whichconcluded with our giving a series oftalks to the community and othersfrom Kuala Lumpur at the CatholicChurch Centre in Taiping. We startedwith three days in the city of Penangwith the Penang Branch. Over twenty-five years ago this community

received our daughter Sue when she travelled the world and did some mission work in anumber of countries. This led to a friendship with the community leaders [Barnabas andBarbara] who later visited Christchurch and stayed as guests in our home. Ourfriendship has stood the test of time and it remains firm today. How good it is to seeBarnabas and Barbara still serving, still caring for people, still fervent for the Lord. Likemost communities our brothers and sisters in Penang have faced trials and testing butthey have stood firm. They are impressive in love and service and it was a joy to be withthem. Typical of who they are, on the day before we were to depart, our suitcase whichhas been lugged all over the world many times- ‘died’. I mean it really ‘died’. We were bythen just completing the conference in the Taiping. Upon hearing what had happened ayoung couple who are reasonably new to the Penang Branch immediately unpackedtheir suitcase which was ready for the trip back home to Penang - and gave it to us.Thank you Neil and Faye for your kindness!

The conference was hosted by the Taiping Branch and everything was superblyorganized, again the hallmark of committed relationships at work. Topics we coveredincluded:

Maintaining Community in AdverseConditions [Christchurch following theearthquakes]

Biblical base for Home and Communityleadership

Things that Work against Us Strengthening our Lives Challenges and Joys And How to Walk the Talk

All of our friends in Malaysia well know that Roger does not go well in 33 degrees C andhigher, and that his preference is for a colder wind and snow swept mountain ridge ataltitude. But the intense heat and humidity is well compensated by the joy of relationshipwith people looking to do exactly what we strive to do: live the life we are called to incommitted relationships - life in Covenant Community.

SPRING FIESTA 2012 – AUCKLAND BRANCH

This Spring Fiesta was an experience of growing in faith and witnessing God’sfaithfulness. As we began to plan and prepare we had at the back of our minds theresounding success of last year’s Spring Fiesta. And we were wondering how to matchthat. But God had His own plans. Every day that drew us closer to 25th Aug. 2012 (thebig day) revealed more and more of the hand of the Lord.

As Harry said when he announced the final figure raised, planning was the easy part…itwas the carrying out of the plans that was the true challenge. But God went ahead of usand made a way. The core team and the supporting team met to pray and we saw themost amazing answers from our heavenly Father. At one of the intercessory sessionsHarry led by sharing a video of the boy who willingly gave five loaves and two fishes(John 6:9) and that is what we witnessed this year. Brothers and sisters willingly cameforward generously sharing their five loaves and two fishes and the Lord as He did backthen by the sea of Galilee, did it again and in His faithfulness multiplied it. Although therewere two other competing events happening at the same time, we saw a total sell out oftickets three weeks before the actual day. One sister from Christchurch inspired us bysowing from her tough situation. We had anonymous donors give beyond expectationand in mysterious ways the Lord arranged divine appointments that opened the doorsfor even more donations. Not only did people give, they also commended the Lamb ofGod Community saying, “your group are such lovely people and do such good work.”

When it came time to pick up resources like table cloths and balloons the shophappened to have a sale. What a coincidence people would say but we knew it wasmore of a God incidence. The ambience of the hall was created by our newlyweds, with help from the young and the not so young. People gave of their time, talents, energy and more. We heard of people wading through their soggy backyards gatheringmint for biryani and others using their cars like a taxi ferrying people and tables from onepoint to another. Families’ fresh out of mourning the loss of loved ones worked to makehampers and food. But it was all done with joy and in a true spirit of unity.

When the day finally arrived the Lord blessed us with perfect weather. Like pieces in ajigsaw everything came together and the evening unfolded. We were blessed to have acouple join us from Christchurch and a brother fly down all the way from Perth. Thespring themed colours and beaming smiles welcomed all who entered the hall. Weopened with prayer and after that all was a whiz as people lined up to buy food coupons. This time the lip smacking food was a total sell out and soon it was time for dancing. There too the Lord revealed His awesome faithfulness. There was a problem with thesound system and a brother was requested to make a prayer. What followed was awitness to both the Community members as well as the guests. The Lord answered theprayer which was backed by a loud Amen.

This Fiesta was about more than raising funds. It was about raising people and buildingthem up to higher levels. It was not about what we could do for God but all about whatHe did through us. It is now almost a fortnight since the Fiesta but word still keeps rollingin about what a wonderful and blessed time was had by all. Thanks indeed to God forHis faithfulness and His gift of faith which saw another successful Spring Fiesta.

PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY- WHAT CAN WE DO?

Dear Brothers,

God’s peace and blessing be with all of you in your service to His people! As Jeanmentioned in his address at the ICM [International Coordinators’’ Meeting], we want tocontinue to encourage strong participation in the “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity”across the entire Sword of the Spirit. We are hoping that on-going participation in thisevent will serve to strengthen our ecumenical identity as a core element of our mission.

As a reminder, our purposes in participating in this event are threefold: Provide a common mechanism for focused intercession for ecumenism Join with other Christians from around the world in this prayer Use this observance as a vehicle to raise the profile of our ecumenical call in all

Sword of the Spirit communities

The week of prayer for 2013 will be observed from January 18-25 and the materials forthe observance have been developed by an ecumenical Christian student group in India. They chose as the theme “What does God require of us?” based on Micah 6:6-8. Thechurch in India deals directly with many issues of social injustice and alienation and sothe readings and commentary for this year speak especially to these issues. We haveedited the commentaries slightly to make it applicable to all our communities whilepreserving the spirit of the original.

As we did last year, we will provide a set of materials to assist the local communities intheir observance – meditations, family prayers, etc. These will be provided in a printablebooklet format for easy distribution. We will make sure you have these materials no laterthan December. Additional resources such as worship service outlines can be found atthe websites for the World Council of Churches or The Pontifical Council for PromotingChristian Unity.

At this time we are simply writing to remind you of our desire to continue and strengthenour participation so that you can include this in your pastoral plan for next year. As partof that planning we also wanted to pass on some good ideas from various communitieswho participated actively in the past years. Please see the attached list of these ideasand feel free to implement those that fit your local situation.

Brothers, thank you in advance for your attention and support for this matter. This will bean excellent way to gather the whole Sword of the Spirit in prayer for this important issueso close to the Father’s heart.

In Christ,

Jean Barbara Dave Hughes Bruce Yocum

“Good Ideas” for the Observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:

Local community experiences from 2011:• Nazareth, Dublin: we instigated an evening of worship with an evangelical church

(with whom we had never shared before and who kindly responded to ourinvitation by saying we could join them in their premises!).

• People of God, Pittsburgh: In our community we held a Men’s Breakfast with aspeaker from the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. We had 48 menattend. There were at least five denominations represented. There were threepastors and a deacon there as well. Then thirty-four of our people attendedthe worship service at Hiland Presbyterian Church (where we hold ourcommunity gatherings). I was given a few moments to speak about our calland mission. In return, a few of their folks attended our gathering later (3 pm)in the afternoon. Hiland Pastor addressed our community with a few words onChristian unity. In this way, we were able to not only talk and pray aboutChristian unity, but also, demonstrate it.

• Brot des Lebens, Munich: We started with a talk at our community gatheringbefore the week for which we used part of the talk outline and in addition 2papers of the Catholic Church: “Unitatis Redintegratio” [Decree onEcumenism] and “Ut Unum Sint” [“That All May Be One”].

• During the week we had a prayer meeting every evening from 7.30 - 8.00pm forwhich I had translated the prayer booklet. Everybody got a copy of theGerman version so they could use it for their personal prayer as well. Thescripture passages, the comment and the prayers were very well received. Forthe last evening we organized separate men’s and women’s meetings withspeakers from the YMCM.

Other ideas for observance:• Devote time at your gathering during the week of prayer for common intercession

using the intercession topics from the prayer guides.• Invite a local church or church leaders to a time of prayer together. There is an

approved outline for an ecumenical service at the “Week of Prayer forChristian Unity” website that can be used if desired.

• Call the community to a common day of fasting during the week of observance.• Have your local youth group do a 24 hour prayer watch to intercede.• Encourage small groups to take time to intercede together.

CHALLENGES IN LIVING TOGETHER AS COMMUNITYResource for House Group Discussion by Tom Caballes

Overcoming Self-PityOctober 2012

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testingof your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be

perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. [James 1:2-4]

Life has its share of ups and downs. One character in the Bible who experienced the extremesof ups and downs was Job - he was a ‘blameless and upright man’ and God approved of him.He was a blessed man in many ways but he was severely tested when he almost lost all that hehad. Yet his initial response was: “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed bethe name of the LORD.” [Job 1:21] But when he was tested for the 2nd time, he relented to self-pity. He cursed the day he was born and sought to be vindicated in God’s eyes. At the end, Jobcould not and did not win against God; he repented and God restored his fortunes back.

So How Do We Overcome Self-Pity?1. Let us be honest: self-pity is a bad attitude and a very bad habit; it is our choice whether todwell on self-pity or not. It is like a child pouting to his or her parents. It is constantly dwelling onone’s hurts, anger or misfortunes. It keeps us self-focused rather than other-focused and God-focused. It prevents us from serving God and serving one another; it is essentially selfish. It isdestructive to one’s emotional health.2. We need to grow in faith that God is in control of everything, and that He knows the future forus. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those whoare called according to his purpose. [Romans 8:28]3. Be thankful for your blessings – focus on those, rather than our misfortunes. Everythingbelongs to God. In the eyes of God, we have no ‘rights’ –in our lives, everything comes fromGod’s grace; all are gifts from God that we cannot claim we deserved in the first place.4. We need to focus on the blessings of others, and not dwell on your misfortunes. It is nothealthy to compare our misgivings to others’ blessings. As we experience a need, we shouldpray for our needs in faith and then ‘release’ them to God.5. God is a God of the impossible. He wants us to “ask, seek him and knock” [Matthew 7:7-11]without tiring, like the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8. We need to be patient and persevere.6. If we have been abused, mistreated and experienced injustice in the past, we need to forgiveand release those who offended us to God. We need to be free from anger and resentments thatcan constantly hound us towards giving in to self-pity.

Other Scripture References1. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and toeveryone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is thewill of God in Christ Jesus for you. [1 Thessalonians 5:15-18]2. Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humblemind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this youwere called, that you may obtain a blessing. [1 Peter 3:8-9]3. Other Scripture references: 2 Corinthians 7:9-10; Psalm 37:1-11; James 5:10-11; 1Corinthians 13:4-6; Psalm 135:14.

For Personal Reflection and Group Sharing:1. Do I have the habit of comparing my misfortunes with others’ blessings? Do I indulge in self-

pity? What do I need to do to overcome it?2. Do I hold on to my memory of being abused, hurt, being rejected and suffering injustice in

the past? What prevents me from forgiving those who offended me?

PRAYERWATCH - SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, ARISEFight the good fight

Over the years we have received an occasional prophetic word calling us to unity andthe first six months of this year are no different as the following three summarized wordswere received.

West Auckland Prophetic Word – 24 June 2012: Colossians 3:12-17: Therefore, asGod’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive oneanother if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgaveyou. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you werecalled to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly asyou teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, andsongs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do,whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to Godthe Father through him.

Wellington Prophetic Word 12 February 2012: Ephesians 4: 1-6: Live a life worthy ofthe calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing withone another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond ofpeace. We have one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all.

Christchurch Prophecy 10 June 2012: Every one of us getting a tongue of fire above ourheads they were all coming from the same fire, from the same place we were all giventhe same strength and we were all part of the same Lamb, the same God and Jesus hadmade us part of him

Unity is something we often take for granted but we need to occasionally look at thevision God is calling us to and look at how we are living it. Unity is important as we arecalled to be one with God, one in the way we live so others will see we are the fifthgospel. As we are called to be a people, we need to be seen to love each other and notbe upset by any differences we may have. We also need to be in unity as we pray thePrayerwatch, even though we pray as individuals in our allotted time slots as part of aspiritual wall surrounding the Lamb of God Community. We need to pray as one as wespend our hour on watch during each week using the updated prayers, keeping up withthe updates so our prayers are in unity with the needs of the community. Passing theWatch is another area that increases the unity of the Watch as we communication withthe warrior we pass the Watch to. Even if we are unable to take time to pray the Watchwe should be aware of the needs of the Lamb of God Community and pray in unity.

If you have any comments or questions concerning the Prayerwatch then please sendthem to me or give them to one of your branch leaders to send to me. God bless andwatch over you all.
