  • 8/11/2019 Independence Referendum Scotland - Why I Think We Should Vote Yes.

    1/2

10 common sense reasons why Scotland should vote Yes in the

    Independence Referendum.

    1. Democracy, always getting the government that Scotland votes for.-A Yes vote will ensure Scotland will always get the government that it has voted for.Meaning the decisions of Scotland can be made by the people of Scotland and not thepeople of Westminster in London. Therefore, no risk of Conservative and potentiallycoalition UKIP government that would be hugely unpopular north of the border.

    2. A fairer and more equal society for Scotland.

-Independence presents Scotland with a once in a life time opportunity to create a fairerand more equal society. Unlike the UK which is regarded as one of the most unequalnations on the planet. Where politicians work in favour of big corporations instead of thepeople they govern. Allowing big corporations to pay little to no tax while the UKgovernment seek to privatise long standing institutions such as the NHS and education.

    3. Opportunity to better utilise strong Scottish industries for the benefit of Scotland.-Regardless of oil, Scotland as an independent nation would be one of the richest smallcountries in the world. In addition, world renowned industries such as tourism, alcohol(whiskey), renewable energy (25% in EU) and many more show that Scotland more thanhas the capability to be a strong independent country. Evidence of Scotland becoming a

richer nation is backed up by an independent report in the financial times that statesScotland would be richer than the rest of the UK in the event of independence (03.02.14).

    4. Increase public reengagement with politics in Scotland.-The Scottish people will benefit from increased accountability as the people will havecloser contact with their politicians. This means localised issues can be properly dealt withby people from their country instead of from individuals from London. Furthermore anincreased engagement with politics is key to Scottish people having a vote and voice thatcan make a real difference. Individuals are becoming disillusioned with the current systemas they see it doesnt work and that their voice/vote makes no difference in this system.

    5. Members of the No campaign have previously admitted that Scotland could be asuccessful independent nation.-David Cameron the UK prime minister and Alistair Darling head of the the No campaignwere both quoted as saying Scotland could be a successful independent country. Therefore, this rubbishes all of the No campaigns scaremongering claims aboutindependence as the people trying to convince us to vote No dont even believe their ownclaims. This means both these mens new stance on Scotland independence is through afear of losing Scotland and the benefits that this nation provides to the UK as a whole.

    6. An abandonment of a dated Westminster establishment that only seeks to serve

elite groups and large corporations.-Scotland will no longer have to adhere to longstanding Westminster ideologies that serveonly to benefit elite groups of people. On the other hand, independence is an opportunity

to abandon these ideologies by creating a modern society that puts all of the people thatlive in Scotland before the interests of preserving elite groups like Westminster does. Toexemplify this, the ability to break down ideologies of Westminster that seek to preservethe 1% of the population over the other 99%. Large gap in the distribution of wealth in anation like the UK creates an unequal and ill society.

    7. A No vote will weaken Scotlands reputation on a domestic and global scale.-A No vote in September will weaken Scotlands reputation and position on both aninternational and domestic level. This decision will exemplifying on an global scale that asa nation Scotland do not think they are capable of running their own country like manyother independent nations across the globe. Furthermore, Scotland will be weakeneddomestically in the UK as the Westminster establishment will drop Scottish issues as wewill no longer pose a threat of breaking away from them in the union. Therefore, the onlyway to ensure we dont lose powers and our reputation is through a Yes vote.

    8. No campaigns hollow promises of new powers for Scotland if we vote No.-The No campaign has stated that in the event of a No vote Scotland will acquire newpowers. However they have failed to state what these new powers will be whenquestioned on this. Further more, this recent focus on new powers has conveniently arisenin the presence of an independence debate. This suggests that these proposals are in factnot genuine and are condescending claims to get people to vote No on September. Oncethe No campaign get the vote they want the claims of more powers will be dropped as thethreat of losing Scotland is gone. This evidences that the No campaign knows that theScottish people want more powers for their country and in reality the only way toguarantee new powers for Scotland is by voting Yes on the 18th of September.

    9. The No campaign have made up lies to manipulate the Scottish public.

-The No campaign working on behalf of Westminster are not to be trusted. They havemade numerous false claims in regards to Scotland becoming an independent country. Forexample, the leader of the No campaign, Alistair Darling, stated before the indy ref that itwas common sense for Scotland to use the pound sterling as an independent country. However, now he is leader of the No campaign he states that Scotland will not get thepound even although it is in the best interest of both Scotland and the rest of the UK. Thissuggests that currency is being used as a tool to get people to vote No. However, it iscommon knowledge that in the event of a Yes vote common sense will prevail andScotland will be allowed to use the pound sterling. This is clear evidence of the continueddictatorship that Westminster demonstrates towards the Scottish people. Even in the eventof a Yes vote the Westminster establishment have shown they can not stop in telling

Scotland what they can and can not do as an independent nation.

    10. No to nuclear weapons.-Finally independence ensures Scotland will no longer bebe used by the UK as a convenient dumping ground fornuclear weapons. Weapons that we dont want to hold andthat costs the UK billions of pounds to keep. Money thatcould be better used to improve important areas to thepeople of Scotland such as health, jobs and education.Areas that Westminster are currently cutting spending from.

Vote Yes on September the 18th if you agree!
