SpeedyLegssaid,“We’lllightfirecrackers!”
FluffyTailsaid,“I’mgoingtoshootoffskyrockets!”
FloppyEarssaid,“WecanlightuptheChinesefountains!”
“Whiz,bang,it’sIndependenceDay!”shoutedSnubbyNose.

“Oh,thinkoftheburnedpawsandwhiskers,”saidGrandpaGrizzly.
“That’snotaverysafewaytospendIndependenceDay.Idon’tthinkanylittleHopperswillbelightingfireworks.”
ThenSnubbyNosesatdownonthegroundandbegantosniffandsob.
“NofirecrackersandnofireworksmeansnorealIndependenceDay.”
“Hush,SnubbyNose,itisnotpolitetocrysoloudly,”saidMotherHopper.
“GrandpaGrizzlywillknowwhattodo,”saidPapaHopper.
SnubbyNosedriedhiseyesandlistened.
“Howaboutapicnicinthewoods?”saidGrandpaGrizzly.

“Apicnicwithpicnicbaskets?”askedSpeedyLegs.
“Andsandwichesandlemonade?”askedFloppyEars.
“That’sjustwhatIwantedtodoonmyvacation,”saidFluffyTail.
“HoorayforIndependenceDay!”shoutedSnubbyNose.
“Whatagoodidea.I’llbeginpreparingthefood,”saidMotherHopper.
“AndI’llgointotownandbuysomepicnicbaskets,”saidPapaHopper.
Thatnight,theHoppersallwenttobedwithoutbeggingtostayuplater.Thenextmorning,theypackedtheirbasketswithsandwichesandlemonade.MotherHopperhadmadecookiesandpiesandtarts.PapaHopperhadabigpicnicblanketandsixbaskets.ButGrandpaGrizzlywasnowheretobefound.
“I’msurehewillturnupsoon,”saidPapaHopper.

SotheHoppersstarteddowntheroadtowardthewoods.Soontheycametoaplacewherefourroadsmet.
“Whichwaydowego?”askedSnubbyNose.
“Hey,thereisasignhere,”saidSpeedyLegs.
MotherHopperreadthesignoutloud.“Youmaytraveleastorwest,butthesouthroadisthebest.”
SotheHopperstookthesouthroad.Theroadwentonandon,anditseemedliketheywalkedforhours.
“Iamgettingtired,”saidFloppyEars.
“Thisbasketisheavy,”saidSpeedyLegs.
“Iamhungry,”saidFluffyTail.
“Wait!Iseeanothersign,”saidSnubbyNose.Therewasalittlesignatthebottomofaverytallhill.

“Comeonupthisbigtallhill.We’llhaveapicnicandeatourfill,”readPapaHopper.TheHoppersracedupthehill,andatthetopwasGrandpaGrizzly.Hehadbuiltasizzlingfireandwasroastingmarshmallowsonastick.TheHoppersspreadouttheirpicnicblanket,unloadedtheirbaskets,andbegantoeat.
TheHoppershadbeenwalkingforsolongthatsoon,itbegantogrowdark.Justaftertheirpicnicsupperwasfinished,afizz-popsoundcamefromthesky.TheHoppersalllookedup.Intheskywasasparklingfountain.

“Look,theyarecomingfrombelowthehill,”saidSpeedyLegs.
“Thefirefightersaresettingofffireworksforthetown!”saidFloppyEars.
“Wehaveaperfectview,”saidFluffyTail.
“Hooray,hooray!FireworksforIndependenceDay!”SnubbyNoseshouted.
Thenfireworksbegantoexplodeinthesky.Theywereredandyellowandgoldandgreen.AlltheHopperssatonthehillandwatchedthefireworkslateintothenight.
