Independence Day Celebration July 1st Commerce, Texas

Well we had an eventful day in Commerce, Saturday the 1st , not knowing whether or not we would be rained out for the 4th Celebration. Two inches of rain overnight and intermittent showers all morning long turned out to be the pre curser of a beautiful day at Centennial Park.

There is a long list of sponsors and donors that we need to thank for a successful event but we will start with Commerce Chevrolet-Buick for your Corporate Sponsorship for this year. Alliance Bank provided the cooker and prepared the food as well as ample help to serve the hot dogs and hamburgers. Ben E. Keith provided the wonderful stage and street signs to distribute all over town. Sonic Drive-In provided all the hamburger and hot dog buns. Fix and Feed provided the water and Ice. Commerce Little Angels loaned us their Bash Bug for the children. Of course we want to thank all our Chamber Board members who came out to help set up, sell food, put out tables and chairs, take money for the food and jump houses, drive the bash bug, run here for this and that and generally make sure that everyone had a great time.

This year we had some great vendors present at the event who were able to present their businesses to the public and get their name out there to help their image. The food bank took in a lot of food as well as monetary donations to help their great cause. Our two local radio stations KETR and the Coyote helped with on the air plugs for the event and a simu-cast of music to go along with the best fireworks show in Northeast Texas from Pyrotex out of Leonard, Texas. The Ben E. Keith stage rocked when the Cross Trails Cowboy Church band preformed as well as when Twisted Whisky took over and finished out the entertainment for the evening.

We always want to thank the Commerce City Police and Fire Departments for helping keep us safe at all our events and the City and Parks Department Employees for all their help.

Now on to the Bash, Look out Commerce the 2017 Bois d’Arc Bash is right around the corner and it should be bigger and better than ever. See you there.

Dear Chamber Members,

Our annual Commerce 4th of July was an incredible success. While the rained threatened to overtake the day, our spirits prevailed. The Cross Trails Band performed to a crowd over stepping mud and battling humidity followed by a rocking performance by Twisted Whisky. The night was capped off with the greatest fireworks show in the area. The success of our annual event was in due to part to several forces working together and achieving greatness. Paul Voss, Executive Director of the Chamber and his wife Susan worked morning noon and night. Gary Rusch brought a team from Alliance Bank to do the cooking while Chad and Julie Gentle brought volunteers from Commerce Fitness for set up. Shelly Gerard, Vivian Freeman, Holly Bauschka, Teena Ayres, and Marie Humphries sold burgers, manned the bounce houses and helped where ever and however to make the 4th of July spectacular. I would like to send a special thanks to Commerce Chevrolet for their generous sponsorship along with the Chamber members who donated, sponsored, and attending. Without you, we wouldn't have found success.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you each of our Chamber members to join us in creating the success of the 32nd Annual Bois d'Arc Bash taking place September 22-23 downtown. We have plenty of opportunities available for you to lend a helping hand. Sponsorship, volunteering, booth rentals, and participation are all ways you can give back to your Chamber. Sponsoring the Bash is a great advertisement for Chamber members as your business will be placed in the faces and ears of all who visit downtown at the Bash. Volunteering at the Bash will put the face of your business in front of all who visit the Bash. Selling your business products puts your product and your business in front of everyone at the Bash. Any way you can support the Bash is a marketable opportunity for you.

I look forward to seeing you at the 32nd Annual Bois d’Arc Bash!

Best Regards,Jeannie C. [email protected]

Keturi Beatty Welcomed As New Associate Vice President for Advancement

Texas A&M University-Commerce announced the selection of Keturi Beatty as its new Associate Vice President for Advancement. In this role, she will lead the university’s main fundraising and alumni engagement efforts. Beatty brings more than a decade of experience in institutional advancement, having worked with thousands of volunteers and boards to advance a variety of fundraising and giving programs.

A&M Commerce Interim Vice President for Advancement, Wyman Williams, sees the addition of Beatty to his leadership team as a significant and positive change for the university and the local community. “Keturi brings significant experience and professional skills to our fundraising efforts that will prove to enhance our students’ opportunities in reaching their educational goals,” he stated.

Beatty previously served as the Senior Director of Development for the College of Education at the University of North Texas. In this role, she redesigned major gift solicitation strategy, aligned the strategic priorities of the university’s College Development Board, implemented a peer solicitation program, and integrated communications, alumni, marketing, events and strategies to support college and campaign goals. Prior to her time at UNT, Beatty also held leadership positions with The Hockaday School and the Lamplighter School.

Keturi looks forward to making the philanthropic and personal connections that she knows can change the lives of students. “It’s an honor working with altruistic individuals and translating their passions into philanthropy. I get to make a difference every day, in a profound way.”

University president Ray Keck heralded Beatty’s decision to join the advancement leadership team at A&M Commerce, stating, “We are so delighted to have attracted Keturi and her family to the University and to the city. She brings an experience and understanding of institutional advancement which should greatly enhance engagement by our alumni and our citizens.”

Beatty currently serves on the District IV Board of Directors for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Board of Governors for St. Timothy’s School in Stevenson Maryland, and the Advisory Board at Oak Hill Academy in Dallas, TX.

University Receives National Science Foundation Grant to Increase the Number of Women in Physics

Assistant Professor of Physics & Astronomy, Dr. Robynne Lock, and a team of researchers representing four institutions will unite 16,000 high school physics teachers behind a movement where each teacher will recruit at least one female student to pursue a physics degree in college. The project, led by Florida International University, also includes teams at the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) as well as A&M-Commerce. The $3 million National Science Foundation project grant includes $203,285 for Texas A&M University-Commerce.

Despite the fact that about the same amount of women takes high school physics as men, women make up only 20 percent of the college undergraduates pursuing a degree in physics. To tackle this divide, this project will provide high school physics teachers with strategies and support to recruit women into physics.

"This project has the potential to reduce the gender gap in physics significantly," said Lock. High school physics teachers have direct access to the recruitment of the top women in physics."

The first phase of the project, slated to start with the new school year in August, will involve 10 teachers from urban, suburban and rural schools who will pilot the program, including several Texas teachers. They will ensure that the lessons and best practices, including recognizing students who solve difficult problems, can be adapted for students throughout the country.

By 2018, the research will expand to 24 teachers. Eight of those teachers will be recruited from the northeast Texas region. If all goes as planned, there will be a nationwide rollout by 2019 with a targeted goal of reaching 16,000 physics educators – or about 60 percent of all high school physics teachers.

At the conclusion of the project in 2020, researchers will have more data to determine how their methods might be applied to other STEM fields, including engineering, where women traditionally have been underrepresented.

A&M Commerce Stars on the Rise Scholars

The Office of Hispanic Outreach & Retention and Profes! at Texas A&M Commerce co-hosted the annual Stars on the Rise Scholarship Awards Program in collaboration with The Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The event was held at the Dallas County Schools Technology & Training Center.

The event was led by Dr. Lee Young, associate vice president for enrollment management, Dr. Fred Fuentes, assistant dean for enrollment management, and Mr. Gilbert Hernandez, director of the Profes! grant.

The Stars on the Rise Scholarship serves marginalized populations by providing competitive scholarships to students in the DFW area. The GDHCC works to foster the Hispanic business community; by extension, with this scholarship, it connects student to resources that would help mitigate the rising costs of universities and community colleges.

This year, Jessica Rivera of Sulphur Springs High School and Ruth Gainzar of Bonham High School were recognized as Stars on the Rise Scholars. Both plan to attend A&M Commerce this upcoming fall.

Rivera will major in Mathematics and minor in Spanish. “I’m excited to further my education at TAMUC in the fall,” said Rivera. She is also the

recipient of the TAMUC Regents Scholars Program, Sulphur Springs Soccer Association Scholarship, Junior Waverly Club Scholarship, Gerald and Glenn Fry Memorial Scholarship, and the Sulphur Springs Area of Retired School Personnel Scholarship.

Gainzar is a recipient of the TAMUC Honors College Scholarship, Presidential Scholarship, and Hagan Scholarship. She is a Verne Cooper Foundation Scholar and Bonham HS Student Council Scholar. She also serves on the Spanish National Advisory Committee and the Bonham Education Foundation. “Being a Stars on the Rise Scholar is such a blessing and an honor because I believe that the theme behind the scholarship embodies my character,” said Gainzar.

The Office of Hispanic Outreach and Retentions provides scholarships through the Stars on the Rise and University Crossroads scholarship programs. For more information on future scholarships, please visit the Texas A&M University-Commerce Hispanic Outreach page. www.tamuc.edu

Texas A&M University-Commerce, L3 Announce Electrical Engineering Partnership

Texas A&M University-Commerce and L3 Mission Integration announced today a major partnership to increase the number of electrical engineers available to regional industries.

L3’s ISR Systems Sector and Mission Integration President Bruce Trego and Texas A&M University-Commerce President Dr. Ray Keck recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding the university’s Fall 2017 launch of a new undergraduate degree program in electrical engineering.

The new initiative will significantly broaden opportunities for A&M-Commerce students to engage in cutting-edge internships, technical programs and research projects. As part of the three-year agreement, L3 will provide a distinguished lecturer in electrical engineering to the university.

“Thoughtful Americans have long known that public-private partnerships offer our best hope for significant and sustained progress,” said Dr. Keck. “In fact, this relationship is a distinctly American practice. The MOU marks a significant investment by L3 in A&M-Commerce, making it our largest partner. We are a better university because of L3’s commitment to the community, education and skilled engineering job creation.”

Mr. Trego said, “L3 anticipates hiring as many as 42 new graduate and co-op electrical engineers over the next year. We recruit from 25 schools across the southern region, so the opportunity to hire BSEE candidates from our own backyard is extremely beneficial.”

In addition, Mr. Trego said, “Electrical engineering co-op students will now have even more of an opportunity to gain applicable real-world experience.

We are extremely pleased to be working with the university on a project that will benefit regional industries and add more A&M-Commerce alumni to our workforce.”

The aerospace and defense contractor, located in Greenville, Texas, specializes in the development and maintenance of military aircraft and special-mission systems.

Along with L3, A&M-Commerce received support from other area employers to establish the degree program, including Oncor Electric Delivery Company LLC, The Campbell Soup Company, Raytheon Company and Raven Industries.

The university received final approval for the new degree from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in April. The electrical engineering program will prepare individuals to apply scientific and mathematical principles to the planning, design and evaluation of electrical and electronic systems and their components. Students interested in joining the inaugural class of electrical engineers at A&M-Commerce can apply for admission via the ApplyTexas online application at https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/gen/c_start.WBX.

The new degree plan is the third engineering program offered at A&M-Commerce, joining bachelor’s degrees in construction engineering and industrial engineering. Those programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).

Commerce Area Alumni Reception

The James Thrower Student Athlete Academic Center in the Field House on the campus of Texas A&M Commerce was a thriving center of activity on July 20 when the Commerce Area Alumni and Community Citizens met to socialize and hear updates on Our University activities.

The Athletic Academic Center was a project that has been on the wish list for our students for several years. James Thrower, a former football, basketball and track E.T.S.U. athlete heard of this need and made it happen with a very generous donation. The Center is heavily used and appreciated by students and faculty. James Thrower appreciated and loved this university.

Alumni Director, Derryle Peace welcomed the crowd. He introduced Sam Walker, our former Men’s Basketball Coach. Sam now has a new title, Executive Director of Alumni Events and is working closely with Derryle in his new position. They are both very enthusiastic about this new assignment.

The program was an informative and delightful presentation. Sam emphasized the love and devotion of the alumni and community for our university. He shared stories of his meetings with other alumni. The stories were heart warming and entertaining. Sam is scheduled, to be working out of the office and on the road promoting our alumni and their many accomplishments. He will be traveling to Grayson, Hunt, Hopkins, and Tarrant counties and the outer edges of Houston to host other receptions of this type.

Sam shared the spotlight with head football coach Colby Carthel.

Colby is enjoying winning seasons. He shared highlights of the past and projections for more winning seasons in the future.

Judy Sackfield, Associate Athletic Director for Academics in charge of athletic scholastic activities was the next speaker. She reported on the many academic accomplishments that have been made by the athletes. Judy has been with the university several years and has made a great impact on the scholastic improvements of the athletes.

Sam introduced our new member of the Advancement Office. Keturi Beatty is Associate Vice President with Advancement. Keturi moved to Commerce from Denton. She immediately fell in love with our university and town. Her husband and she bought a house before she started to work. They have two adorable little girls.

Sam reiterated that there would be many more gatherings of this type in the future, here, there and everywhere there are alumni of this university. He loves to hear their success stories and their experiences as Lions. Sam thanked the group for their attendance and attention. It was a great evening of fun and information,

Derryle thanked the crowd of more than 100 people. He thanked his group of Stephanie Fiorisi, Rachel Mitchell and Amy Bassham for their help in making this event so very enjoyable and successful.

Brookshire's Donation Supports the Northeast Texas Children's Museum

As Brookshire's Grocery carts travel at the Children's Museum, the "Customer in Training" sign can be seen just above the heads of the young customers. Since 2009, the Brookshire's Grocery area has been one of the most popular areas in the Children's Museum. Their continuing support goes toward supporting this exhibit. "As the items are constantly purchased and then restocked, many of the empty containers need to be replaced with Brookshire's Grocery items, "said Sharline Freeman, Executive Director of the Children's Museum.

Brookshire's Grocery has included signage to add to the authenticity of the area. Dennis Anderson of Kartridge Korner added a "beep" for scanning each item. Each new addition has resulted in the increased popularity of the area. Young shoppers sometimes clear the shelves in their enthusiasm to scan and purchase the items.

As the number of visitors has increased each year at the Children's Museum, the Brookshire's Grocery area has had additional "Customer in Training" young shoppers. "This has been a great partnership. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by Brookshire's Grocery. We appreciate their continuing support.", said Donna Tavener, President of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Texas Children's Museum.

Broc Hohenberger, Manager of Commerce Brookshire’s, presents the Brookshire’s dona-

tion to Sharline Freeman, Executive Director of the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum.
