India will observe its 69th Independence Day on 15 August 2015. The day will be marked with festivities across the country. Celebrations are held at public buildings and educational institutes across India, with the main event a parade at Red Fort in New Delhi with the Prime Minister in attendance. Threat Perception Multiple terror incidents in Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur recently have resulted in security agencies maintaining a high level of alert throughout India. Security deployment has been increased significantly in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other metros. Stringent checks are being carried out at airports, railway stations and other transit points across the country. Although it is advised to maintain caution leading up to the day, there is no cause for alarm, as there have been no serious incidents in the major cities during this period in recent years. ŸAim to avoid places of religious, national significance as they may be primary targets for an attack. ŸAny unattended baggage, vehicles, suspicious persons/activity must be reported immediately. ŸAvoid malls, hotels/restaurants and areas popular with expatriates. If you do visit these spots, know your escape routes well. ŸCarry identification documents to avoid inconvenience at security checkpoints. ŸAvoid making comments on national and other emotive issues; avoid being part of such discussions. ŸAvoid forwarding unofficial reports/rumours through WhatsApp, BBM and other messaging services ŸAvoid travel to sensitive areas like Jammu & Kashmir, North-Eastern States and Maoist-infested regions.
