USE OF ARTICLES

WHAT ARE ARTICLES?

The words ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’ are called articles.

They define whether something is specific or unspecific. There are two types of articles:

(1) The Definite Article (The) - "The" is called the definite article. It defines its noun as something specific (e.g., something previously mentioned or known, something being identified by the speaker).

This is the lake. (This is a previously specified lake, i.e. one already known to the readers.)

(2) The Indefinite Article (A, An) - "A" and "an" are called the indefinite articles. They define their noun as something unspecific (e.g.something mentioned for the first time).

This is a lake. (This is a previously unspecified lake.)

EXAMPLES:

(a) I fell over the chair again. (b) Can you pass me a chair?

In example (a), the chair is specific. It is known to the audience. However, in example (b), the chair mentioned is unspecific, i.e. it can be any chair.

(c) I loved the apple pie after dinner. (d) I love an apple pie after dinner.

In example (c), the reader is aware of the apple pie being praised. However, in example (d), the speaker is not talking about any specific or particular apple pie.

In this worksheet, we shall be learning about indefinite articles.

Class – 4 Science Worksheet-4 LIFE CYCLE OF ANIMALS

The period of time for which a living thing lives or is expected to live is called a lifespan. Animals need to reproduce so that life on earth goes on. Not only birds, but animals like fish, frogs, reptiles and all insects lay eggs. A frog’s egg develops into a

tadpole. It keeps growing and slowly changes into an adult frog. Some insects like grasshoppers and cockroaches have three stages in their life cycle. The baby insect which comes out of the egg is called a nymph. It is very similar to the parent. The shedding of old skin or shell is called moulting. After moulting many times, it changes into an adult. Other insects like houseflies and butterflies have four stages in their life cycle. The young one that hatches from the egg of these insects is called a larva. It is very different from the parent. It looks more like a worm. The larvae of different insects have different names. The larva of a housefly is called a maggot. The larva of a butterfly is called a caterpillar. The caterpillar eats leaves and grows rapidly. After sometime it stops eating and forms a covering called pupa around itself. Later the pupa bursts open and the butterfly comes out.

Class - 4 Computer Worksheet-4 Topic: Units of Memory / Facts

Whatever we feed into the computer, gets converted into a machine understandable code, called Machine code. A computer can understand only two states – ON (represented by 1) and OFF (represented by 0). These two digits 0 and 1 are called Binary digits or Bits. The data is stored in the computer memory in the form of bits and is measured in Bytes.

Hard Disk was invented by IBM team lead by Reynold B. Johnson.

He is also considered as the father of the Disk Drive.

Types of various Units of Memory:

KB - Kilo Byte MB - Mega Byte GB - Giga Byte TB - Tera Byte PB - Peta Byte EB - Exa Byte ZB - Zetta Byte YB - Yotta Byte

The first Flash drive was manufactured in early 2000 by a company called Trek Technologies.

IBM manufactured their first Flash drive in 2000 by the name of “DiskOnKey”.

CD’s are generally of two types:

CD-R (Compact Disk-Recordable): Data once written cannot be erased, but only read.

CD-RW (Compact Disk- Re Writable): It is a disk erasable CD. Data written on it can be erased and rewritten many times.
