NOTES

MATERIALS & TOOLS:

3 Pieces 32cm 22 Gauge Round Wire (Dead Soft)1 Piece 500cm 28 Gauge Round Wire (Dead Soft)1 Piece 10mm 14 Gauge Open Jump Ring (Outer Diameter)Needle Nose Pliers, Wire Cutters

Pages: 20, Steps: 44, Measures: 4.5cm

TERMS:

Base Wires: 22 or 20 Gauge Round WiresWeaving Wire: 28 Gauge Round Wire

TO NOTE:

*Some steps may leave very little scraps. It is recommended to cut a few cm of additional length duringthe first run through this lesson. Remember to adjust the starting point to compensate for the change to the wire lengths. If an additional 4cm is added, for example, and the starting point is noted as 8cm fromthe left, this would then be changed to 10cm.

*Long lengths of weaving wire may be cut into smaller, more manageable lengths, and added as needed, or wrapped around a lightweight plastic sewing bobbin to control the length.

*While this tutorial does not discuss mirroring, it is recommended for earrings that each step be completed on each earring at the same time. After each step, hold each earring face to face to make surethe compression of weaves or the size and flow of the wires match one another before moving on to thenext step.

*When the weaving wire is added to any part of the design, it is recommended to leave a small tail for leverage, as needed, until the weave or coil is established, then use wire cutters to trim the tail. Wherever the weaving wire is trimmed, pinch the trimmed end flush against the base wire around which it is wrapped. This will prevent the trimmed end from catching clothing or scratching skin when worn.

*Coils around a single wire are tighter than those around multiple wires, thus acting as a stopper and preventing the weave from traveling or shifting along the base wires. All weaves demonstrated in this lesson should be finished with one or two coils around any single base wire, unless directly followed byanother weave.

*Compression of all weaves demonstrated in this lesson is necessary to create a compact piece, allow for smoother movement of weaves and add stability to the finished design. Upon completion of any weave, use finger tips to pinch the ends of the weave in towards one another.

The 2/2 Weave

Step 1

Hold the base wires horizontal and parallel with ends even to one another.

Coil the weaving wire once or twice around the bottom base wire (or base wire 1) at the starting point detailed in the lesson.

This step is only necessary when initializing a new weave with a new length of weaving wire.

Step 2

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 1 and 2, between 2 and 3, then behind 1 and 2.

Step 3

Wrap the weaving wire over base wires 1 and 2, between 2 and 3, behind 2, then between 1 and 2.

Design StepsStep 1

Cut three 32cm pieces of 22 gauge round wire. Hold these wires parallel and horizontal, with ends even to one another.

Cut one 500cm piece of 28 gauge round wire. Leaving a small tail for leverage, as needed, complete 15 rotations of a 2/2 weave, beginning 12cm from the left.

Step 2

Complete 9.5 rotations of a 3/3 weave on the top two base wires.

Begin and end this weave with the one-wire coils, which should be on thetop of these two wires.

Trim the weaving wire for later use.

Step 3

At the end of the 2/2 weave, bend the bottom base wire straight down and curve the 3/3 weave as shown. Ultimately, the goal is to create a tear drop shape.

Step 4

With the weaving wire, previously set aside, coil 1.5cm on the bent base wire.

Step 5

At the end of the coil, bend the base wire to the left, sharply.

Adjust the wires as needed until the three wires are once again parallel to one another.

Complete another 15 rotations of a 2/2weave.

Close the tear drop shape, allowing thetwo 2/2 weaves to touch one another.

Step 6

Adjust the wire ends until they are pointing left and parallel to one another.

Coil the weaving wire five times around all six base wires.

Step 7

At the end of the five coils, bend the bottom two base wires straight down.

Coil the weaving wire 15 times aroundthe remaining four base wires (pointing left).

Step 8

Add a 10mm 14 gauge open jump ringto the four wires pointing left.

Bend the four base wires to the right, around the back of the jump ring.

Step 9

Coil the top and bottom base wire once all the way around the jump ring to further secure the ring in place.

Step 10

With the weaving wire, still attached, complete 17.5 rotations of a 3/3 weaveon the two base wires pointing down.

Begin and end this weave with the one-wire coils, which should be on theright of these two wires.

Step 11

Curve the weave into a small clockwise loop, then continue to curveto the right, beneath the 2/2 weave, then curve up slightly.

Pass the wire ends to the back, between the coil and 3/3 weave, as shown, then bend the ends down around the back of the 3/3 weave.

Step 12

Pass the left base wire (at the end of the 3/3 weave) up between the 3/3 and2/2 weaves, as indicated by the arrow.

Step 13

With the weaving wire (still attached) begin a coil on the wire positioned in the previous step.

Step 14

Curve the coil into a small clockwise loop, then continue to curve the coil tothe left, over the top of the 3/3 weave.

Add coils as needed until they reach the 3/3 loop.

Bend the coiled base wire end and weaving wire to the right, around the back of the piece, then to the front, through the center of the tear drop shape.

Step 15

With the weaving wire, still attached, begin a coil on the wire positioned in the previous step.

Page 11: Incurvation Pendant · photographic instruction presented by or attached to Nicole Hanna, her name or designs, or Nicole Hanna Jewelry, for any reason, without express written permission

Step 16

Curve the coil into a small clockwise loop, then continue to curve the coil over the top of the previous coil.

Add coils as needed to end evenly with the previous coil, then trim the weaving wire for later use.

Wrap the end of the coil once around the jump ring, as indicated by the arrow. Trim any excess from this base wire and discard. Pinch the trimmed end tightly closed around the jump ring, to secure.

Step 17

Bend the four base wires (attached to the jump ring) up, with the two outer wires pointing out from the two inner wires.

Step 18

With the weaving wire, previously set aside, complete 18.5 rotations of a 3/3 weave on the two middle base wires.

Begin and end this weave with the one-wire coils, which should be on theright of these two wires.

Step 19

Curve the weave into a small counter-clockwise loop, then continue to curvethe weave to the right, over the top of the piece.

Step 20

Wrap the weaving wire once around the first 3/3 weave, leaving about 2mm of space between the two 3/3 weaves.

Step 21

Add another 7 rotations of the 3/3 weave, ending this weave with the one-wire coils.

Curve the weave towards the coiled cross bar, near the coiled loop.

Trim the weaving wire for later use.

Bend the ends of the weave to the right, behind the back of the coiled cross bar.

Step 25

Wrap the weaving wire up over the top of the 3/3 weave, down behind the back of the 3/3 weave, then to the front, between the 3/3 and 2/2 weaves.

This will latch the two weaves and coil together, preventing them from separating from one another when worn.

Step 26

Continue to add coils until they end evenly with the 3/3 weave.

Bend the end of the coiled base wire to the right, behind the back of the coiled cross bar.

Step 27

Pass the three base wires (pointing right), between the coiled cross bar and 3/3 weave, until the wire ends are pointing left.
