Increasing public awareness of adult ADHD: the development of ‘Attention Grabber’ an innovative community-based interactive digital resource Introduction Despite advancements in the understanding of ADHD in adulthood¹, there remains a lack of awareness both within healthcare settings and the general public. This has significant implications in terms of access and engagement with appropriate diagnosis and treatment, and public responses to an ADHD diagnosis². A range of resources -‘Making Sense of adult ADHD’ - were developed with the aim of increasing understanding of adult ADHD. Initially aimed towards a clinical population, the project was extended to increasing public awareness of ADHD through the ‘Screens in the Wild’ (SITW)³. Method & Materials The Making Sense resources included a film depicting personal experiences of adults living with ADHD. Adults describe what it is like to live with ADHD as well as positive experiences of receiving a diagnosis. To progress the resources into the sphere of public engagement, a computer application ‘Attention Grabber’ was developed, incorporating an abbreviated version of the film and an interactive game version of a continuous performance test (CPT). Attention Grabber has been uploaded onto four public screens in Nottingham and London as part of the SITW project. The screens are situated in urban environments, using interactive touch-screen technology. Results Data collection is ongoing across the four interactive screens. Given the public nature of the project no personal demographic data is being collected. Data is being collected in relation to how many members of the public engage with Attention Grabber, how many play the game, how many go on to watch the informational film, and responses to four questions: Conclusions Stigma of neurodevelopmental conditions can significantly impact on engagement with treatment and affect mental wellbeing. Factors specific to ADHD include public uncertainty about the validity of ADHD as a diagnosis and scepticism towards ADHD treatment². In addition to the specific goal of raising awareness of adult ADHD, finding out whether and how people engage with interactive screen technology could usefully contribute to the design of future public engagement and health promotion activities. Increasing public awareness of adult ADHD:the development of ‘Attention Grabber’ an innovative community-based interactive digital resource

IntroductionDespite advancements in the understanding of ADHD in adulthood¹, there remains a lack of awareness both within healthcare settings and the general public.

Method & MaterialsThe Making Sense resources included a film depicting personal experiences of adults living with ADHD.

ResultsData collection is ongoing across the four interactive screens. Given the public nature of the project no personal demographic data is being collected. Data is being collected in relation to how many members of the public engage with Attention Grabber, how many play the game, how many go on to watch the informational film, and responses to four questions:

ConclusionsStigma of neurodevelopmental conditions can significantly impact on engagement with treatment and affect mental wellbeing.
